A1A Ale Works
Our tradition of food made fresh, from scratch, and our unique selection of 22 craft beers are the most evident examples of this passion. Our restaurant and people offer a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, fresh food carefully and creatively prepared. We feel it is this combination of elements that make a great dining experience possible.
Four of us had dinner outside on the balcony as requested. All except my husband enjoyed the entrees and drinks. (My husband's barbecue chicken was "nuked" and the potatoes were hard. Because he didn't want to hold things up, he didn't send it back). Chloe's service was exceptional given the crowds and the Nights of Lights view from our table was stunning. Chloe apologized to my husband for the unacceptable chicken and asked if he would like anything else. He declined and she comped his beer. Because we have eaten at A1A Ale works for many years with no issues, we will treat the "nuked chicken" as an aberration and will definitely be back.
We went because it had so many good reviews but we're so disappointed. The food is not as described nor is it good. Salt and pepper go a long way and when you call them garlic mashed potatoes there should actually be garlic in them. Also, when the menu says BBQ chicken on a skewer then actually put it on a skewer. That is my biggest pet peeve when eating out. Serve what it says on the menu or don't serve anything. Atmosphere was nice, service was ok but not great. We were a party of five and everyone got their food well ahead of mine. None of the food was really got except for the pretzels app which was actually really good!
Hi Cheryl, I'm sorry you did not enjoy your meal during your recent visit to A1a Ale Works. I wish you would have let a manager know at the time so that we could have corrected any issues. I will get with our Chef on the mashed potatoes. We roast the garlic every morning and the potatoes are usually a big hit. As far as the chicken it does not come on a skewer. The choices are BBQ chicken or a shrimp skewer. I apologize for the confusion. Sincerely, Phillip Maddox General Manager

Very nice experience
We were rendezvousing with cousins we haven’t seen in years. I made a reservation for six in my name. When we got to the hostess and asked for our table, she said that it was funny because she had another person named Penny come in just a little while before. I didn’t think much about it, and as she sat us in a booth for six I mentioned that the cousins might be looking for the reservation in my husband’s name. But we sat, then we went ahead and ordered a drink, and still we sat. By the time we’d been waiting a full half hour, I suggested that my husband call his cousin to see what was wrong. Turns out, THEY were the “other Penny” and had been sitting in another area for over a half hour wondering where we were. We had a limited amount of time before folks had to get back on the highway to head home, so losing over a half hour of visiting time was not good. And the receptionist never really apologized, as though it were our fault for the mixup. Then a second round of drinks never arrived. The food was very good, but we will probably look for another more reliable venue next time.
Service was slow and food was bland.... our server Rob was very nice and professional but water went empty for a long time and I had to get up to get plates for our dessert to share. Overall, not so great experience
We love A1A. Great service. Great views. We love to sit outside during Nights of Lights.
Although we reserve a week in advance , hostess would not provide a booth. Food was fair but not great, Paella was done by someone that does not know how to cook a Paella, used wrong rice so as a result I had a soup not a Paella, chorizo was in my opinion Italian sausage of some sort or the worse chorizo in the market. Stay away from Paella
Wonderful food and service. When in St Augustine we always eat here.
My experience in this restaurant was very awful, and I do not recommend this place if you do plan to dine with your family.
I did order a new york strip steak ( well done) and got instead a charred, scorched, and burnt steak. It was like a burnt piece of coal. The problem was not the steak but was the behavior of the server, a young lady who reacted aggressively by removing the plate from the table and left without saying any words.
I was shocked, and then I tried to explain to the server the way she behaved but she said: " I am not the one who cooked it". That was insane as she never apologized for the burnt steak, and never took a time to address the situation with us.
We were so disgusted, disappointed and humiliated that we have decided to leave the restaurant after waiting for one hour for the food. We wanted to speak with the manager but the server did not really bother to let her manager aware of such horrible service.
This message is for the restaurant manager: please take the time to review my complaint and address the behavior of the server because she definitely not a fit for the job.
Her only skill is to ruin the guest's experience.
Loved the linguine! Noisy but cool environnent, a bit pricey but totally worth it!!!
Enjoyed ourselves, the potatoes were very delicious. The bottom of the salmon was a little burnt but it was still good. I understand the place was extremely packed and the cooks had to be very backed up and stressed.
The overall experience was very good and we would come back again.
Great food and excellent service!
We had a wonderful time. We went during the Nights of lights and it was PACKED! People everywhere. I am so glad we made reservations. We were late due to finding parking, but I called to let them know. I knew we would have to wait since we were late. But hey got us right in. Our waitress, Kaitlen I think was here name. It was her first day on her own. She was wonderful. Very attentive.
Seated pretty promptly. Do make reservations as this is a popular place. Nice selections of beers ( the Irish Red is excellent). Good burgers. Parking can be problematic but we walked from the hotel.
We used to love A1A, but our recent visits have not been what we expect. The food seems to be average for a town with so many food options. This last visit, they went a bit overboard with the black pepper. For the price I would expect more from the kitchen. The price was fair and The service and the view are the only memorable experience. It will be a while before we try it again (let the memory fade a bit).
We love coming here with just our family or friends in town. Great tacos and tuna. Also, good local beer selection and outside seating overlooking the bay or old town.
Good Food, great location
Nice experience overall. Good for families as the menu is varied.
Went to night of lights
That was our first visit to the A1a ale house my wife and I really Really enjoyed our dinner and the pretzel appetizer was delicious we also tried two different beers apiece and they were excellent we will definitely come back and visit again thank you. Also our waiter was extremely friendly and was veryPolite and made our experience they’re very good
Went for our 20th Anniversary. They were very busy but our reservations with Open Table got is right in and at a beautifully scenic location, as requested. The food was wonderful and our waitress was terrific. I highly recommend this place. It’s an Ale House, not a bistro, so just be aware of that if you’re looking for something intimate. It is not. But it is exactly what we wanted and service was great!
Food, Service was great waiter was outstanding. Friendly staff great people
And outstanding beer choices will be back soon
Great first time
Excellent shrimp and lobster tacos, burgers, and pasta. You cannot beat the Happy Hour prices for cocktails! And the views! We sat outside to enjoy the Nights of Lights, and watch the world go by. It's beautiful, but very noisy. Difficult to have a conversation, but again the views were outstanding.
Hello, absolutely wonderful from sighing up for call ahead seating to your food, service, ambiance. When we visit we don’t miss the chance to dine with you.
Thank you Charlotte
We had a GREAT time!! We had a server, Connor, and he treated us with so much patience as we had a newborn with us.
food wasnt that good but was ok we saqt outside so that was nice
The food and service were excellent! The views were amazing. We enjoyed everything!
We’ve been here a few times. We originally made a “reservation” for 6:30 pm but arrived around 5:30 and we were able to be seated with no problem. Although it wasn’t really busy, we found service to be really slow. Our server was really nice, and the food good, but once we received our appetizers, the timeliness of everything thereafter went downhill. It took a while for our meal order to be taken, food to be delivered, as well as ordering more drinks and a dessert. We almost left because it was taking a lot longer than it should have taken. I would have expected this if the restaurant was busy (we’ve visited before when it has been), but it wasn’t.
It has been at least a year since we've dined at A1A Ale Works. We won't wait so long to dine there again. The menu has been updated and the dining area appears to have undergone some updating as well. We started with risotto bites with a garlic pesto. Excellent! I had a NY strip, oscar style and it was perfect. St. Augustine is ridiculously busy this time of year. We were fortunate that A1A takes reservations and was able to seat us on time for our 7:00. I'm looking forward to going back.
Good food, & service. Very crowded so the noise level was high.
Loved it!! Only drawback is they do not take reservations
Steak was poorly cooked and it was even a good piece of meat. I don’t see how those were filet medallions. Even olive gardens are better. I asked for medium well. I got 1 medallion so well cooked it was like a cheese burger and the other medallion was burnt on the top but rare on the inside.
Actually, our visit to this restaurant was an excellent decision. Very good attention, delicious food and especial mention to the musicians down stairs in the bar... awesome performances!
Wonderful food, warm staff, beautiful location - our only suggestion; they need to have a better look at whether or not they are ADA accessible. We had to lever the wheelchair in the front door over a steep step up to the front landing and then in through the doorway. The elevator was horrible (teeny tiny and working only intermittently), and we ended up cramming four people and a wheelchair around a table for four in order to be able to even reach a table that we could get the wheelchair to. The food made up for the inconvenience mostly as did the caring staff, but in order to be 5 star rather than 4, they need to be a little more aware of how inaccessible some of the evening was.
Sit upstairs, outside for a great view of the water and town!
We were there on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Our server, I think it was Dave, was so sweet and really a good waiter - but they were clearly understaffed and he had 4 tables that sat down essentially at the same time. It wasn't his fault, but service was a bit lacking. The food was mostly average. The crab/artichoke dip was the best thing we ordered. The shrimp and grits was very spicy and my mother couldn't eat it. The menu description says it has pepper jack cheese but doesn't indicate that it is spicy otherwise. I had the Seafood Cobb salad which says it has lump crab on it. It had crab - but it was the kind out of a can - and there were no lumps involved. Disappointing. My martini came in a beer glass - I overheard Dave apologize to table behind us that they were out of martini glasses. I didn't get the same apology - but it was kind of weird to have a half full beer glass with Georgia Peach Martini in it. This restaurant came recommended from a local friend - so I'm thinking they were perhaps out of sorts due to the holiday - I might give it another try - but with many other options I'm not sure everyone would.
Good food but you soup should not be served after the entree
