About A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the South of Italy.
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

A16 - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
Great food !
If I could move 1 restaurant to my home town, this would be the one. Fortunately I only live a little over an hour away so I do get here often. Love the appetizers, salads, pastas and pizzas, I usually don’t order a main course because I like to order a lot of smaller courses. Great service and wine list too
A16 has lost its charm. They first tried to seat us out back (clearly not the same experience) for a 530p res when the restaurant was completely empty. They quickly moved us to an inside table but cramped by the corner of the bar--fine. My husband's dinner arrived as the leftovers for my meal were being packed up. Completely mismanaged. Someone came to offer us a free appetizer which neither of us wanted, and a half glass of wine showed up lager. Server generally seemed to wish that we weren't there after the original table switch.
Great place for a sit down lunch if you’re looking in the Marina District. Went with two other friends. Had lovely glasses of wine- generous pours and we shared 3 dishes. The squash pizza (we added mozzarella) was surprisingly delicious. There were other pizzas on menu varied from usual (margherita) to interesting (like squash). Super yummy done in brick oven. Carrot salad with frisée and hazelnuts was also really yummy. Highly recommend. Skip the meatballs. They were good but kinda of fell apart before a fork got close plus the value is not great. I mean 3 small meatballs for $16???
Atmosphere is pleasant-dark walls great lighting. I will definitely return. And I’m picky!!
It's been several years since I'd been to A16. I will tell you it'll be another couple before I go back. I was completely disappointed with the experience. The service was extremely slow and we waiting almost an hour for a pizza. I found the food to be good, but really nothing special.
I'm not sure If there have been changes in ownership or in the kitchen, but it's not the same comfy, delicious place I've been to in the past.
We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary here and sadly, while the experience overall was pleasant, the service left a lot to be desired. We waited so long to place our order that eventually, the som took our order instead of the waiter as she could tell we were anxiously waiting and looking for him. Pizza was tasty and so was the salad. Pasta was okay but we've been to a lot of other places in the city with better pasta. Dessert was very good though and the wine list had a great authentic assortment.
We had hoped for much better. We arrived at the restaurant opening and were the second party to be seated. Nonetheless, service was inattentive and slow.
The bean soup was made with a low quality stock and wan't work finishing. Our pizza had limp crust, the ingredients were poorly distributed, and way to much garlic. The wines were quite good.
Give a choice between Defina and A16, I think I will stick with Delfina as the quality is much more consistent.
If you want overpriced pizza with an attitude then this is the place for you. The food is tasty and the spot is certainly trendy but it is pretentious and overpriced. Our server told us removing an anchovy from a pizza would be "a disservice" and that another ingredient did not impart a flavor...let me just say that when you (a) have food allergies and sensitivities and (b)
Know you don't like something removing it from a dish is not a disservice. At each point of the meal we were met with some kind of condescension and attitude.
I probably won't go back
The food was incredible, and the service was fantastic. However, we were a six top squeezed the middle of a bunch of tables, we couldn’t pull our chairs out to sit in them without hitting another table or chair. It is also VERY loud inside and hard to hear.
The pizza crust here is a 3-day dough, allowing the flavor to develop, and absolutely delicious. Not to mention the chili oil that is served with. Love! We usually split one of the salads from the antipasti section of the menu, plus one pizza, plus one pasta or meat entree. I love how the pasta entrees are offered in 2 sizes, a smaller portion and a full entree portion. We usually share the smaller size. We love food, but we're not big eaters during any one particular meal and the size alternatives allow us to sample more food without overeating. We really appreciate that.
We often don't have room for dessert, but the chocolate budino is outstanding.
Outside of the restaurant's control is the challenge of finding street parking. The Marina neighborhood has so many driveways within each street, resulting in less area for parking, and also smaller spots. Still, I always come away feeling like it was worth the effort to get there / find parking (for reference: coming from the Peninsula; and previously lived in the Fillmore district).
