About A16 - San Francisco

A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the South of Italy.

The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

Stopped in for a late Sunday lunch, Fantastic wine (picked by our server) and lovely Margherita pie and a mushroom special pizza. Great to watch the open kitchen preparing for the night's service. Place had tasteful holiday decorations.

I have eaten there several times in the past and really liked their small dishes. They have changed to regular size dishes. Was unable to cut the culotte steak with the knife and steak was too rare. The waiter would not wait to hear the discusson of the order and kind of threw the plates on the table. Its very hot with young people some of whom tend to be a little loud. I really liked the restaurant in the past but now find it geared to very fast service and noisy and not as good food. Very disappointed neighborhood customer.

Great service and suggestions on wine and food from servers who love what they do. The place was a crush as soon as the doors opened and everyone was enjoying the moment. a special treat was a visiting chef and those offerings were awesome. I don't care how full you are...don't leave without the dessert.

Hadn't been there in a while as I moved away from this neighborhood years ago. Happy to report it is still a very nice place with great food and service. The antipasto was very good and enough for two to share. My friend and I both had unique pasta dishes that we're delicious. The server, to her credit, knew the menu well and explained the various pasta and sauces to us. However, even though we ordered the full sizes, they looked like 1/2 orders to these Italian boys. No bread was offered. Which has become common these days, but I really think it should be mandatory when having pasta. I went home just a little bit hungry, which is why my rating is not a 5.

Brought friends that were visiting from out of town, as we love this local place. Our waiter was no more interested in waiting on us than the man on the moon. He had quite an attitude. Ordered a bottle of wine ($70) which wasn’t served for almost 30 minutes after we sat down. The sommelier bought us the wine explaining that they didn’t have what we ordered. Meanwhile the waiter never returned to give us more water or to check on how we were doing. Our appetizers - didn’t come for almost 40 mins (burrata and carpaccio). Then we continued to wait for a half order of pasta and pizza. The people next to us had been served drinks and their meal before ours came. We had to ask the sommelier to check on the food. He offered to give us dessert for free but who would want to stay. It was a shame that the waiter ruined the end of a great day! Not going back.

Wonderful ambiance, funny and attentive waiter plus the food was excellent. Full bar and great small plate menu which is what we had plus a pizza with great crust. Not cheap but worth it in every way.

Have enjoyed A16 a number of times over the years while in SF. Food and wine list always excellent, while the service is usually great it is occasionally slow and the acoustics make conversation a challenge. Overall we're looking forward to our next visit to SF and A16.

The place was packed, super noisy and the tables were jammed in the far back as though it were an after thought. I️ called several times to add one additional person to my party, but they never called back. It’s was my husband’s birthday so it put a major damper on things.

The food was delicious but plates were not consistent and varied a lot in amount of different ingredients of food! Wine service was nonexistent. They failed to deliver the cork, or to handle an aged bottle properly to prevent sediment from floating in the bottle despite specific request in that regard. The food service was not any better. We had to grab the waiter as he was passing by our table to order food. The waiter had no tact (seriously asked one of our party if they knew what pumpkin is)! I jot down some of that to the Saturday night service, yet not every restaurant's service collapses at Saturday nights!

Was really looking forward to our meal at A16, but left underwhelmed. My wife did enjoy her pizza and her salad (although the salad came late, and only after we reminded the waiter - who was very nice, knowledgeable, and apologetic). My appetizer was good, but my main course was bathed in olive oil. Drowning, perhaps. The pasta was thick and considerably undercooked. Not al dente at all. I also feel that it would be nice to have more descriptions on the menu - so guests could be more educated about the meal options.

went to help celebrate our dons engagement withhis fiancé - waiter had a bit of an attitude - they were pushing a special wine night and we did not care for it - perhaps that annoyed him. I ordered the sliced steak but first asked for a description- he totally described the wrong preparation / when we questioned why his description was with capers and menu described mushrooms he was a bit flippant. Both my husband and i commented that if the meat would be prepared Medium rare , red warm center he assured us that's how it is served. When it was presented medium well the server was annoyed and said it was med rare/ He then came back and apologized saying chef said he had been distracted and they would make another / that was fine but the other 3 diners were through eating and although they apologized they still did not try to place my order in quickly - they did offer to buy dessert but i did not want dessert after missing main course. They never brought a celebratory candle in something to celebrate engagement- they would not make the fiancé an Arnold Palmer but upon request brought a glass of iced tea and a glass of lemonade/ very unprofessional and overall disappointment

We brought another couple with us, he a very prestigious person; the couple has been friends of ours for many years. Started with a bottle of wine and pizza appetizer for four persons. When the wine arrived, our friend who had ordered the wine had gone to the restroom, so my husband said he would taste it and asked to see the bottle. The waiter, very irritated for some reason, said the wine name, but didn't give the bottle to my husband to read. My husband simply wanted to see what our friend had ordered and what he was tasting and asked to see it again. The waiter slammed the wine bottle down and walked away. (This was just after he had poured water for us splattering it everywhere including all over my sweater.) Even after our guest returned, the waiter did not return to open and pour the wine; we had to spend some time trying to signal him. The waiter eventually came over to open the wine and began pouring it in an angry manner still, sloshing it over the wine glasses. I am polite to a fault, but I was just annoyed and embarrassed enough, especially since I had chosen the restaurant, that I said to the waiter. "You are spilling the wine, you splashed the water all over me, and you need to stop." The waiter laughed, not a nice laugh, but an insulting sarcastic laugh . I was flabbergasted at his rudeness, and said, "no, I mean it. This is not funny, you need to stop right now." He did act more politely for the rest of the meal. Our bianca pizza was OK, not great, but OK. We ordered three different pastas each were over salted. The bucatini was dry and tasteless, except for the salt. No one liked it or ate it. The orecchiette was bitter. The maccaronara was the best, but not special. So, extremely bad service and sub par food. We used to like this restaurant, but would recommend avoiding. We are still wondering why the restaurant was crowded.

Decent food in an extremely loud environment with less than stellar service. Ambiance and service are not in line with pricing. I've heard the experience is better at lunch. Perhaps we just had an off night, but my expectations are higher. If you're looking for an excellent, tasty, reliable experience - check out Gialina or Regazza for similar offerings.

We love A16 Italian Restaurant. The food is great and reasonably priced. You can get a wonderful pizza appetizer, like the Margehrita, which is a vegetarian pizza, but delicious. Maybe if it has a little more tomato sauce, it would have been better. But it was great as is. The beet salad was pretty good. The chicken entree was amazing. The chicken was so tender and juicy, it's very difficult to make chicken that perfectly cooked and flavored. The red trout was also terrific. The two side dishes of Cannelini beans and Faro Salad were excellent sized portions. We could barely finish the two side dishes. And we had no room for dessert. For the delicious food and the price, you can't beat A16! There are many more expensive restaurants in SF, but the food is more fluff and not as satisfying. And the wines by the glass are reasonably priced and excellent. They have a lot of Italian reds on the menu!

We go here frequently, but this was not our best experience this time. The service was a little slow, and my pasta dish was overpowered by lemon flavor. We started with a roasted carrot salad, which included little roasted carrots, frisee, and a delicious dressing. I had a squash, squash blossom, and squash leaf pesto pasta dish, which might have been good but for the overpowering lemon flavor, maybe from lemon oil. He had a steak dish that he thoroughly enjoyed. He also ordered a fennel side dish that had too much faro and not enough fennel.

Very good pizza as usual. I was surprised from the tripe. The Romana pizza this time had little too many anchovies but we enjoyed. The music was little off for lunch... Rock and loud. We asked to lowered without success.

What a bad experience this was. Real attitude from the two women at the entrance who would not seat anyone from our party until everyone had arrived (even though we had a confirmed booking). So much greater than thou attitude. We complained about them to no real apparent outcome. This is just a bland pizza place. It's noisy and if you want crap pizza and serious servings of bad attitude this is the place to come. The starters list is short and unimaginative. The pizza choices are bland. The server was chewing gum and seemed to want to be elsewhere. We were seated in the very back atrium area which was freezing and had a heavy draught. Italian wine list was extensive but no one knew anything meaningful about it. We hated this restaurant and the experience. Really hated it.

Came here on a recommendation. The pizza was very good. Burrata as well. Only 4 pasta options so keep that in mind if you want variety. Wine and service were great. It gets very loud so not for a quiet romantic dinner. Would go back except too many amazing places to try in this city!
