A16 - San Francisco
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
We offer Three unique seating areas for reservations: the main dining room, our high top seating in the wine lounge, and the chef counter which oversees our open kitchen and our talented cooks.
Please be mindful of these seating options as you select them on Opentable.

This was very unpleasant. The noise level was actually painful. "Conversation" involved shouting, which is what everyone else was doing, making it deafening. The food was ok. Nothing stood out. The hostess was helpful, and the service was fair. For the type of food they serve (pizza and pasta) there are much better options in town. I will not be coming back.
É sempre una garanzia! Posto casual ma di grande standard. WineList incredibile!!!
Excellent first course of cauliflower. Wine carafe of a =n Italian Campania red was well chosen. Zucchini based white pizza a bit bland . Overall still serving good Italian good and excellent wines for many years. Bravo
Excellent mean and great wine. Loved it. Out waiter was fabulous. Knowledgeable and not overly pushy. Highly recommend.
This was absolutely the noisiest and most crowded restaurant I have ever been to. Tables are about 6 inches apart and the acoustics just reverberated every sound in the place and everybody was yelling. Although I could hear the conversations of the table to my left, and the conversations of the table on my right, I could not hear the person across the table from me because it was much further away than six inches. By the second course, I went hoarse from yelling.
About halfway into the meal the manager came over to talk to the people on my left and placed her body within that 6 inches. I literally had to lean to my right in order not to touch her. This lasted for almost 5 uncomfortable minutes.
We ordered three dishes, we liked one of them quite well. I wish we never went to this restaurant as there are so many other restaurants that you can actually go to and have a conversation with the person you come with rather than those you didn’t.
I’ve been here so many times. Definitely am off night.
This is a wonderful place to meet up with people and share a meal.
It's an intimate, cozy place with great service. The menu looked amazing and seasonal... But the food was a major letdown. Every dish was over salted by a large margin. Pasta was so salty it wasn't finished. Brussels sprouts, same thing. Even a salad was too salty to finish. So disappointed. The Italian wine list was interesting and really good.
I am a local who has been going to A16 since it opened. The menu has changed substantially since my last visit. The long list of creative small plates is gone. We had the lamb chops special of the night, which were "highly recommended" by the waiter over the short ribs I had originally selected. I can only conclude they were trying to hard sell the lamb chops nightly special to get rid of them. There were two small lamb chops, each paper thin and over cooked, so as tough as leather. Not enough meat to feed a small child. We also had two pasta dishes, again recommended as the best on the menu, by the waiter. Terribly dry and tasteless, and cold. We left extremely disappointed with the meal, and still hungry at that. So sorry this neighborhood gem has outlived its reputation. Seems like the only thing to still get there is the pizza, which is what most in the room seemed to be having. But there are better places if pizza is your thing. I would never go again.
My mom was visiting from SA and I wanted to treat her.
Experience was Average.
So loud! Good food though. Nice wine pairing with dinner.
The quality of their ingredients was very good and the neapolitan pizza was pretty good too. Very nice ambiance. Service little bit subpar, saw in a couple of occasion avoidable mistakes made by the server. Overall good experience but not remarkable.
Had reservation, but was first walked to bar seating. Bill had extra items we did not order, and had to get it corrected. Food was good, but service is obviously taking liberties.
Spent $600 on pizza and cold pasta.
The pros: The restaurant is moderately cute in a good neighborhood and the waitress was pleasant although not as attentive as I would like. The pizzas are solid but overpriced. Chicken and Brussels sprouts also good but nothing special.
Cons: the portions were very small. Three pasta dishes all arrived cold. We wanted to order the salami plate and the waitress talked us into the proscuitto which was disgusting. The meat was hard and tasteless. The desserts were stale and should have been warmed up.
Normally, I would have sent the food back but was celebrating two birthdays and didn’t want to ruin the night. My husband and I were appalled by the bill and agreed the food with the exclusion of the chicken and pizza was bad. Definitely north $600 for the 6 of us to eat pizza. One of those meals where you wake up the next day with remorse
Moved away from SF 3 years ago and was so stoked to come back to one of my favorite spots. All of the food checked out and the wine list is as extensive as ever.
Food just wasn’t good and definitely overpriced. Service was great but just couldn’t make up for the food.
Waited 40 minutes to be seated when we had a set reservation.
Service wasn’t great. Server forgot about us several times, food came out late etc.
Natalie was an incredible server!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Food was great, but service here is persistently lethargic. Brought both of us the wrong drinks, and visited our table literally only to take our order, deliver our food, and when I flagged them because we needed the check. I want to love it here, but each visit makes me less likely to return.
Nice place. Very fresh salads/veggie starters. Good pizza.
I usually like this restaurant, but our most recent visit was disappointing. Under cooked pasta. Very expensive for what we received in quality and ambiance. However, the service was very good. Perhaps the quality suffered because the restaurant was very busy due to the power outage in Marin County.
The service was really bad and food only so so. And by the way when you order the Tagliere arugula salad you should know in case you don’t happen to speak Italian that Tagliere is beef tongue. Since most people in San Francisco don’t speak Italian how stupid to have that on your menu like that. Of course we had to send the gross plate back which you hate to do but really? For lunch my friend and I split a salad, each had an entree and each had a glass and of half of wine with tip it cost $160! Not going back anytime soon.
Birthday dinner for good friend plus our significant others. My friend likes a certain drink and your staff went out of its way to accommodate us.
So dependable - great food and good service. Fantastic wine list.
Best pizza I’ve had. Noisiest restaurant I’ve ever been to. Couldn’t have a conversation.
Amazing dinner, great service and the food was amazing
My son's Bday!
Great food as always!
Our server was mostly attentive and the food was great; however, the manager cleared our bottle of wine for the table (the most expensive item purchased that evening) after only pouring one glass and we were double charged for every plate we ordered. On top of that, we waited approximately thirty minutes for our check after requesting it. Once we realized the mistake on the bill, their attempt to make up for the mistakes came off as insincere and did not compensate for the shortcomings. I will not be dining here again - which is a shame because I have enjoyed A16 since moving to SF in 2016.
Excellent food and great services. Overall an excellent experience. The only negative part is the reservation system. I had to add a person to the reservation. But I never got a live person on the call. Also no one called me back even after left two messages. But they did accommodate us when we arrived at the restaurant.
The waiter was fantastic. I don’t personally like high top tables. We sat at the bar in front of the pizza oven which was a bit too hot for me but fine with my friend. I wasn’t crazy about the menu this time but the food was delicious and the presentation beautiful. I’m not too familiar with Italian wines but the waiter was very helpful and his choice was delicious. I really enjoy this restaurant and am a light regular.
not at all one of the 100 best, the service was really bad, and the food , pizza was good, not the best, the pasta really bad
One of my favorite italian restaurants in the U.S. I live in Miami, but always make a point of heading to A16 when I am in the Bay Area. Have recently recommended A16 to two friends visiting San Francisco, and both came back to me with rave reviews as expected.
I like this restaurant, but they always seem to seat you late. I had a reservation confirmed at least twice by the restaurant. I arrived five minutes early. Was not seated for another 25 minutes. This is unacceptable.
The coulotte steak I had was tough although prepared rare. Nothing was done by the waitress to correct the situation when I informed her and left pieces half chewed on the plate and had a sore jaw. She also did not bring back my wife's to-go bag with two pieces of chicken from her meal. We did not realize this until we were home in San Rafael. The sommelier was very good with excellent recommendations of red for my tastes.
I always love eating at A16. counter seats in front of the pizza oven are my favorite.
The restaurants is busy for a Sunday night, we had to ask for a wine menu, water, and twice for bread. They must have been short staffed because they couldn't handle the full restaurant when we arrived. I was hoping the celery salad would be something unique and special, but it was basically a Cesar salad with chunks of celery instead of lettuce. I expected thinly sliced celery. Other than that we enjoyed the meal (fungi pizza and steak).
I've been to this restaurant a lot over the years, and 4 times in the last 60 days. It's amazing each time I visit. We live in the Marina and so it's a favourite when we have any friends/family in town. It's cute to simply walk up to Chestnut Street and be able to walk home, the perfect amount of tipsy and full, and see the Place de Fine Arts in it's glowy-glory at night. Our go-to-pick is the sausage pizza (aka Salsiccia) and the burrata cheese — but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. If you have a wine connoisseur amongst your group, a16 has an extensive wine selection, and they'll have whatever you're looking for at any price point. Bon appétit!
We were celebrating the 70th birthday which was mentioned during the reservation, again when we were going to be seated and one more time telling our waiter and request a candle on the desert but there were no candles!!
Will go again
