A16 - San Francisco
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
We offer Three unique seating areas for reservations: the main dining room, our high top seating in the wine lounge, and the chef counter which oversees our open kitchen and our talented cooks.
Please be mindful of these seating options as you select them on Opentable.

Very slow. Our server was pretty overwhelmed. It took two hours. Very pleasant.
Antipasti, aperitif cocktail, and the wine we chose (with excellent description and information from the server — whose name I should have got so I could thank her here) were the high points for me. I give the pizza a strong “B,” but no real complaints.
A16 has long been a favorite dinner destination until our recent 2/16/19 visit. First of all, the hostess who called to confirm our reservation wasn't very friendly and when we arrived, both hostesses did not smile - simply not pleasant for a high-end restaurant. They seemed bored. Our server, however, was excellent. Both appetizers were expensive and the portions were quite small, even for a venue like A16. The aappetizers (burrata, poloents special) were good but not great, and not worth the price. My entree was ok (pizza funghi with proscuitto) and my husband's fish was just ok. Even the ice tea was in a small glass that the server kept having to fill, and then gave a small carafe. (again, not her fault) The dessert offerings were uninspiring, which has often been the case at A16, but usually the starters & entrees more than make up for that weakness -- but not this time. So very disappointing.
Well matched for Wine Geeks. Fantastic list, mostly Southern Italy (not Piedmont, Veneto, Tuscany) of wines you won't know, knowledgeable staff to help you pair, delicious stuff at good value levels. Wonderful 'rustic' Italian dishes go very well indeed. A bit difficult to get evening tables, not a large place.
Good food, ok service, sad was that once home, OT sent me a note saying that we NEVER showed up & were bad customers, never going or cancelling our resy. BUT we did show, even 5 mins early & the GM herself, “Helen” sat us, with massive bill for 2, $170., that for 1 yummy salad & 1 full order pasta & 2 entrees & 2 desserts & 1 soda & 1 hot tea. With way over generous 20% tip = $210. Not even a drop of fancy wine. Then to say we never showed? Very rude & insulting & sloppy. I guess that’s how they roll nowadays?
Or was it that we were the only 2 there at 10pm who were over 35 (besides GM Helen), not living blocks away in the Marina, not wearing WAY to tight blue jeans with boobs out & the same short booties, not with highly colored & very blown dry very straight hair, not tipsy or drunk or constantly on our iPhones? Not a diverse clientele. Only our kinda distracted main server not a Hollywood Model type & with a kinda messy look & crooked nose & way too many wild tats. Oh well, CAVEAT EMPTOR...let the customer beware.
A16 is our favorite neighborhood spot. Food and service consistently satisfy.
Although the service was good, our pasta dishes were so salty that 3 of the 4 diners in our group found them almost inedible. The wine pour was so pithy that my friend assumed it was a sample and not the full pour. The pizza were ordered for the table as a starter was good. I left the restaurant hungry and embarrassed that I selected the restaurant for our group when no one enjoyed their meal.
We went for Valentine’s Day so they had a prefixed menu. The food was decent but was not worth the price of ~100/person. The service and ambience was great. We will probably go back for the wine and pizza.
One of our favorite restaurants in SF. You can never go wrong with A16.
a16 is normally great, unfortunately the valentine’s day menu was not good, outside of the last dish.
We arrived a little early (minutes before open at 5:30 pm) and waited in the “lobby” area quietly. We asked for water while we wait but the lady that seats people refused because it would be “against the law” to serve someone five minutes before opening... Way too much drama for a glass of water!!
Once we were seated, the food was cold and the waitress forgot to bring us an item so we just ended up not getting it! Bad experience. This place used to be one of my faves but not anymore....
Exceptional Italian wine list and staff who knows the list. Great items to choose from. I would go back and sit at the bar where conversation might be easier. Noise level is high but food, wine and service is worth it!
Service was slow and bad
Great food, ambience, always consistent.
Server was not very polished, kind of diner service rather than a sit down. Splashed wine, water, didn’t think to chill our bottle of white wine, brought trout but without the side. Took away serving spoon when we had need for it, didn’t ensure we had cutlery either. He sucked.
We were put in the back room and it was freezing with a terrible draft. The waiter was quite rude as was the sommelier.
One of the best meals we have had in a long time!
Hostess (woman leading ya to table) was extremely rude. Have had same experience with same person on two occasions dining here. Won’t be back.
A16 has been the go-to place for good food, especially I love watching the main courses coming out of the wood-fired oven.
Delicious and good show!
They don’t open until 11:30 but you let me make a Rez at 11! They were nice to let me wait at the bar until 11:30
There were way too many people packed into the restaurant. The staff looked overloaded and stressed. It was too loud. Not the pleasant experience that I remember from years ago when it was not overpacked.
Can’t hear yourself think. Taking it off the list!
The food and wine was amazing. That said, there is one major thing missing. Hospitality. We arrived at 7:28, for a 7:30 reservation. After waiting for 20 minutes we were offered a one ounce pour of some sparkling wine. No apologies or graciousness or warmth from the two hosts. We finally sat at 8:00. We then waited again, not getting our first bottle of wine until 8:17. The server had no explanation of the menu, and didn’t seem interested in talking about the wine. Theee was no “sorry we’ve kept uou waiting...” nothing. No welcome. We really enjoyed the food, we had the citrus salad, the prosciutto, and the burrata. All were delicious and beautiful with rustic presentation. I especially liked the dried persimmon with the prosciutto. We also enjoyed the olive pizza and the fresh spaghetti. We finished with the steak, which came with a wonderfully seasoned side or oven roasted sunchokes which were a highlight. I was really surprised as I used to really enjoy coming here. The last time I ate at the Fillmore location, Shelly was behind the bar tasting is on wines and talking to us as if we were guests at her home. That sense of community and open arm hospitality was missing on this visit. Pretty disappointed, but will give them another try. Hopefully the management knows it’s not all about table mechanics and professional service, and also about making guests feel welcome and like guests. The back waiter was the one person throughout our dinner who even smiled. He gets it.
Food, service, all wonderful, but the noise level is ridiculous. We could not hear each other across the table. Suggest requesting one of the quieter tables at the far back if you don't want to spend the evening shouting at your dinner companions. Everything else about A16 is perfectly lovely.
The popularity of this restaurant mystifies me. The venue is loud, the tables are pressed close together, the food is average, and the non-pizza, non-salad entrees are limited to just a handful. Also, the prices are quite high for what is served; e.g., I ordered a plate of five small meatballs, and my bill came to $33. If the meatballs were awesome, I might not have minded. But they were average meatballs. Not bad, not great. The best part of the A16 experience was the superlative, exemplary, and extraordinary service that I received from my server, Nataliia. She is a gem. I only wish that the menu was as outstanding as she is.
I would recommend A16 to a friend but the noise level is IMPOSSIBLE! Waaaaay too loud. WE were yelling at each other for over an hour. Not a relaxing dinner. But despite that, the service was terrific. The food excellent. And the wine was fab. That said i would not ever go back, as the sound issue was horrible.
We took our children as we are venturing to Italy this summer and wanted them to try some close to authentic Italian food. It was a hit, we loved it. Better than I remember it. Great solid restaurant, if expensive.
Bad service. Our waitress came by once our entire meal. I’d recommend table seating as you don’t get good service at the bar.
Absolutely love A16 and their ability to accommodate vegans! The fungi pizza with their chili oil is incredible! Always impressed with their wine list and never leave dissatisfied!
OK food, OK service, really loud interior noise level. I had high hopes for dinner but don't need to done here again.
Food and atmosphere and service are all stellar! So much flavor and quality!
Fab as always!
The food was fantastic and the service was too! It was my birthday and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate requests (I had friends who couldn't be there call in ahead to order Champagne for the table and another friend drop off a cake earlier in the evening, they brought it out with sparkler candles and then even took it back to cut and serve to us). We had an absolute lovely evening!
Solid. Authentic. Comfortable. Reliable. Friendly. Deliciousness. These are the words that come to mind as I type. I love the way Italians do food and service and PIZZAAAAA!! OMG. The simple Margherita pizza here is nothing short of divine (we were still talking about it the next day!). I’ve been spoiled with plenty of authentic Italian pizza in what now seems like a past life. I fell IN love in Roma, and also with Roma. That said, I had the pleasure of flying back and forth to Italy for a period of time visiting my boyfriend, honing and perfecting my palette. Having pizza like this is what I hold out for, and I am a little more than picky when it comes to quality. It is hands down, the best around! While the wine list and the ambiance are also fantastic the service and knowledge really stand out, which is what sparked my review. I have been in the service industry via food and hospitality, retail and spa services for 25+years. Service is a lost art. Authenticity is missing today. I want to be pampered and attended to by people who are caring, fun, and genuine when I get out, and that is what I really love about A-16. On my most recent visit, we had Noah serving us at the bar, and he has a great way of being attentive and zeroing in, even during chaos. Great patience and recommendations- which is what is always needed at a good wine bar. The staff is fantastic and we love the manager we also met on this visit, Helen, who greets everyone from her own staff to the patrons, like family (a happy one!). A happy staff will always domino-effect down to the patrons. Thank you for taking such good care of us!! We are looking forward to seeing you all again soon! My dining partner wanted to add that her favorite all-time 'dish', besides all the pizzas and steak, is the cauliflower side with the special seasoning being used on the Brussels sprouts now, a la 2 years ago, and to please bring it back. :) Salut!
We were most disappointed in the food. One of the specials was trout which I enjoy but the A16 trout was very “fishy” rather than the sweet fish that I am accustomed to.
Like food and service hear! Noise so loud we sit in back room. Was very dark. Will return
Very loud. Horrible overpriced pizza. Horrible desert. Pizza was literally 1 mm dough - and 3 small slices of cheese. Chocolate dessert was extremely rich, not recommended.
Great but crazy noisy loud cannot hear the person next to you
We were seated quickly and the experience started off just fine, however after a moderate wait for our appetizers, we waited over 45 minutes for our entrees. At one point our waitress came by and blamed the kitchen for the delay, saying the food would be out in five minutes...after almost 15 minutes she delivered us a free salad to apologize...and our food still didn’t show up for another few minutes.
After the entrees arrived my guest requested salt and pepper, which never arrived. While the food was good the service was unfortunate and embarrassing as I had recommended A16.
At no point did we get a visit by a manager to check on our meal, and we were so tired after two hours for two courses we just wanted to get back to our hotel. Hence why we didn’t share this experience while still at the restaurant.
Hopefully someone from the restaurant will read this and reach out....certainly left a bad taste in my mouth.
Just not great. Had a few things go wrong in terms of food wait times, meat was overcooked, entrees came out separately. Service was very accommodating and apologetic, which was appreciated, and the wine was tasty. Just wasn't impressed by anything we ate, especially given the price tag.
