A16 - San Francisco
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
We offer Three unique seating areas for reservations: the main dining room, our high top seating in the wine lounge, and the chef counter which oversees our open kitchen and our talented cooks.
Please be mindful of these seating options as you select them on Opentable.

Service was lacking - had to ask for attention several times.
The pizzas are to die for, the bread and olive oil was irresistible, and the salads were divine. That being said, we had a horrible, inattentive server who was pushing apps before we even ordered our wine. Then once we ordered our apps she never returned - it took another 30 minutes to find someone to take our order. And the wine menu isn't the easies to read - it's many pages, and you have to be familiar with your Italian wines. Not to mention, the paper in the binders don't stay so we were flailing a bit trying to get through it. Fortunately, we had our server replaced and he was excellent. I mention this in the review because you have to be good on all fronts...not just the food.
Always a fantastic experience with great wine and delicious food!
Food was delicious. Services was great. A16 is my favorite restaurant to go to. Totally worth the price.
Food and wine were great as always, but the meal started with us waiting over 20 mins to get our drink order taken and the service didn’t improve much from there. I usually eat at the bar here where the service was always great. I had friends in from NYC and was excited to take them here, but was embarrassed by the slow service. Asked to get food wrapped to take home and it never showed back up. Felt very uncharacteristic of this place but disappointing nonetheless.
This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and so we booked a table. The three of us were all from out of town, The food was not good, I am sorry to say, mainly because it was so incredibly salty. I ordered the roast chicken and the skin was so salty as to really be inedible. One of the party ordered the rib eye (I think that was the piece of meat), and it was really tough, which was also unfortunate. Further, we would have shared our unhappiness with the main course to the waiter, but, literally, he never returned to the table to check on our satisfaction with our dinners. We saw him again when he put a dessert menu in front of us. There was one positive note: the sommelier, a woman, was wonderful and her suggestion for a fab white wine was just that: fabulous! We enjoyed the wine and nothing else.
Absolutely delicious.Great service too!
Great service......wonderful selections of pizza. Good pizza! Good salads. Great wine list.
Shared the squash salad wouldn’t order it again. Pizza was great. Asked the waiter (who spoke fluent Italian) for a wine recommendation and his selection was good but wondered why he picked it after we saw him make the same recommendation to three other tables who were all eating different items; trying to clear stock? Overall good experience.
Love this place since day 1 - 15 years ago. Never disappoints
Very disappointing and actually upsetting to the person we were celebrating, compared to previous experiences that created nice memories! It was very loud. People very close together. For the amount of money we spent I would have expected much, much more!
The service was not good. It took a long time for anyone to take our order and twice I had to ask for our drink. When the waitress brought my second drink it was after we’d asked for our check. I just figured she’d forgotten and had let it go. The food was good but not fantastic. We won’t be going back.
Fantastic fresh take on Italian classics. Loved the summer squash salad and mushroom pizza.
The burrata was perfect. Maybe the best eve. Simple presentation, just oil salt toast point. But the pork chop was tough and the Ragu was boring. I feel terrible saying it because A16 has been around and the serving staff were hard working and wanted to make us happy but I would not go back.
Way too loud and way too hot in dining room. Food was only mediocre and service was spotty at best (mid-delivered orders at the table, long periods of neglect and food not delivered simultaneously). Overall impression was of a place that does not try very hard because it knows it doesn’t have to...
The food is decent and ambiance is good. However, we didn't find the food extraordinary for the price we pay. Moreover, the waitress spilled some wine while pouring into our glasses and didn't offer any type of compensation in return.
We enjoyed our evening at A16. Brought friends from out of town. The pizza and pasta were good but the sauces for the pasta were average at best. Still coming back but hope for better next time.
Wonderful staff and delicious food and didn’t feel rushed through dinner. Excellent and even leftovers the next day!
As someone who often dines alone, I felt something akin to a lack of welcome at this restaurant. Was I wasting somebody's time? I reserved a table, why was I seated at the counter? Why would the waiter insist on describing the specials, even though they were clearly meant to be shared by 2 or more? As I walked to A16 I passed at least a half dozen interesting restaurants. I've dined here two or three times - sadly, it has dropped from my list of favorites.
Delicious gem salad. Artichoke salad not my favorite - better at other restaurants. Perfectly cooked salmon. Delicious pizzas with thin crust; you can't go wrong with pizza. Pastas are very good but understand they are definitely al dente.
Food was subpar in comparison with past experiences over the years. And our server was disinterested and cold. Not nearly as good as it used to be.
Always a good choice. Plates are filling but with 1/2 choice not overwhelming.
Great food. Fantastic atmosphere and the staff was friendly. Will be coming back.
Walked out after sitting at table for 10 minutes and waitress behavior unacceptable
excellent food as usual. The portion is a little small though
A-16 is a go-to place whether you are entertaining out of town guests or just out for an evening with friends. Can't go wrong with any of the pizzas and we loved the variety and selection of pastas. Very extensive wine list with a knowledgeable sommelier.
A16 has AMAZING food, ambiance, service, and overall value for the dining experience. And a special place for a date or really any special occasion. Most of all, the food is incredible. A16's pizza is to die for! The closest comparison is Tony's pizza in North Beach.
A16 used to be my favorite restaurant for many, many years. This lunch was good, but it wasn't as outstanding as it used to be. The Margherita pizza was still good, but the sauce and cheese used to be better. The shaved artichoke salad was not good. The raw artichoke was too hard and chewy, leaving bits of fiber in my mouth... either it needed to be cleaned better or cooked slightly to make it more edible. I gave up eating it. The burrata was stringy and dry. Sad. Very sad. Dessert was a chocolate budino tart and that was outstanding. Shout out to our server who was very nice and patient as we sat at the table for a long time. I would give it another try. Maybe it was an off day?
The restaurant was particularly loud the evening that we dined, making it hard to concentrate on your own dinner conversation and detracted from the flavour of the food. This is a regular spot for us to die in and was unusual to be quite so loud. Hoping to come back at a less busy time next occasion we dine
Had a 9:15 reservation and was on time but table was not ready until 9:45 so did not respect the open table reservation.
Best pizza in SF.
I go to A16 often and always love the food and wine list. There menu is constantly changing.
Great restaurant. Just a bit pricey on the second dishes and salads but overall a top quality spot!
We have been going to your restaurant for many years, and has become our favorite place to go to in San Francisco. All the servers are absolutely superb, and the food is simply amazing. I’m lucky to come to San Francisco four times a year for business, I never miss an opportunity to eat at A 16. Thank you!
The pasta we ordered was underwhelming for the price.
Lovely wine list, food was excellent. Miss Iris
Good food but the service was very very bad.
Very noisy, expensive for what we ate.
Wine super pricey
The food was mediocre at best and the service was some of the worst I’ve experienced in recent memory. Our waiter ignored us the entire time, ex: we would ask for small things like water and be totally ignored. Excellent wine list though. Paid $250 for two people (two apps, wine, two entrees). Would NOT recommend.
Salmon tartare: flavorless, no salt
Shaved artichoke salad: mediocre
Trout: best thing we tried other than the wine, cooked very well
Orecchiette pasta: no salt, WAY too much lemon, terrible overall
Sancerre wine: $60, delicious
