We sat at the chefs counter and watched them bake the pizzas in the wood fire oven. It was the first time for my friend and she really enjoyed it.
Our waiter was a wonderful and made the already great food even better.
I thought the atmosphere was good overall for a date though the place is clearly loud. Plus, the wait staff kept walking behind my date's chair and the wall to be able to access another table and that was wrong (they shouldn't do that). Although my date did not complain about it, I imagine they bumped into her chair on several occasions. Also, they forgot our leftovers so I left the restaurant without the half of the pizza we did not eat. Didn't realize it until I got to the car and did not go back. Finally we shared one veggie appetizer, had a pizza and a fish dish and two glasses of wine. Cost with tip was $135. Seems a little steep given the issues raised above.
As always, did not disappoint.
Had a VERY strange "lack" of greeting from the Hostess....who "informs" us that she has placed us at the Bar for our RESERVATION and proceeds to walk in that direction. I did stop her and "suggested" to her that the reason for my reservation was to reserve a table NOT a seat at the bar. She then walk us to a table and walked away....no words! Had it not been for GREAT service from our waiter I would NEVER recommend this location given this type of treatment. Always curious if this is because someone sees 3 women and ASSUMES we will take what we can get vs speaking up. Doesn't work well for this woman!
The service is great, food presentation is awesome, and the meal is very tasty. A16 is our favorite go to place for special occasions. ❤️
Took a friend there for dinner hadn’t been to A16 in a while I use to eat there weekly it was surprisingly average, dishes lacked flavor, the sparkle in the plates is gone, presentation is still good the ambiance remains chic and trendy but I was grossly disappointed
Love A-16! Have dined here several times. Innovative, fresh, but not fussy food. Wait staff pleasant and not pushy. Menu is small, but if you want food that is delicious and different this is the place to go!
Ordered cocktails and starters. Starters arrived before cocktails. Asparagus starter was wonderful but received 8 spears for $16...a little pricey. Service was okay. Entrees and sides were okay, Brussels Sprouts were very good. But for a meal for 5 with 3 cocktails, 2 beers, 1 bottle of midrange wine and no dessert/coffee with tip cost $450+, it should be better than okay.
Food was amazing. Service was awesome. Had a great date night with no hiccups
Generally good food, but not as good as the best places in the neighborhood. Also a little more $$.
Nice atmosphere and service.
Good wine list.
Vegis were terrible, even the sprouts were dry, woody and tasted old. We sent them back for carrots which were also old and dry.
We had heard good things about the pizza, so went with that, but it was disappointing. The crust was gummy, and the sauce bland. On the service level, pretty bad. Of the three pizzas, two were delivered together, and the third (our kid's) about 10 minutes later. The server was mostly absentee. Drinks were good. We didn't try dessert. We won't be going back.
Dinner was delicious. Peyton was a great server, attentive and smart. I would return in a heartbeat.
After school concert which ended at 8P, went to A16 for dinner to celebrate. My 11 year old was starving (of course), sow e put in his margherita pizza order right away. Unfortunately, the pizza took nearly 30 minutes to arrive. We had appetizers coming (for the adults), before his pizza came. Our server was also not attentive - took a while to get our wine, never checked back on how food was tasting. My husband wanted some chili flakes or pepper and we had to go grab it ourselves. The food here never disappoints - the service never matches up to high standards of the food.
In general I have enjoyed my dining experience at A16. Not a fan of that room in the back-feels like your dining in a town hall. Service good & informed.
I thought that I had filled this out. I love this place but this was a weak and overpriced menu. Some places mail it in on Sunday and that seemed to be the case.
The prices have continued to climb in a way that your peers have not. $30 meatball entree - seriously?
Once again another great meal for the six of us at a 16. Wonderful service. Great sommelier. Pizza is crazy good and the porkchops were fantastic as were the salads. We travel all the way from Walnut Creek and love this place
We were there for dinner on St. Patrick's Day and the restaurant is right next to an Irish bar. It was very busy.
We had a reservation and were sat when we arrived but at an undesirable table. It was the one table at the end of the bar by itself, getting the draft from the front door and having servers bump our chairs to get to their order spot at the bar. Terrible table.
My friend ordered stesk and she liked it, my husband ordered chicken he didn't like it and I had the trout it was terrible, overcook rubbery texture and not particularly flavorful seasoning or sauce on the fish.
I've eaten at A16 many times and have decided if I go back it will be for their salads and pizza. Their entrees are mediocre-at-best and extremely expensive for what you get. We ordered a side of "roasted" Brussel sprouts they were practically raw. Large order of cookie plate was also disappointing and expensive.
Dinner was marred by poor service - one ditzy server can screw up the ambience. The "back room" is also not inviting and once you show up for dinner they won't necessarily have a table for you in the main room.
A16 Rockridge was our favorite restaurant until recently. Too many staff members have left and their replacements lack the warmth and friendliness of the former staff.
Wonderful chef’s counter seating.
No offense meant to Tony's in San Francisco, or all the New Englanders who swear by Sally's, or frankly any pizza place in between, the Vesuvio pizza (spicy soppressata, garlic, smoked mozzarella, chili, tomato sauce) at A16 was the best pizza my wife and I have ever eaten. Simple, but complex and layered with flavors, the spice of the chili and sausage elevating the smoke of the pizza oven and the mozzarella. The fried olives and fried cauliflower antipasti were also great, but not quite other wordly like the pizza. My wife enjoyed the Lemon ricotta gnocchi but it was a little to bland for my tastes. Nice and subtle but was washed out against the strong flavors of the antipasti and pizza.
Cocktails and wine pairings by the glass were very good as well. A wonderful evening out.
I love this place. They lost our order. We waited an hour and a half and finally got the food. They were very apologetic and sweet and I will definitely be back. Mistakes happen and it is how you handle them. Service staff—from host to wait staff were totally lovely.
Food was fantastic. I had the funghi pizza. It was excellent. Our whole table tried a bunch of different things. All good. The fried cauliflower was a standout. It is a loud but enjoyable atmosphere. Definitely would return.
Extremely overrated and expensive place that thrives on having a Neapolitan certified Pizza oven. The Pizza is OK if you like “authentic” Modern Italian Pizza, but the prices are steep for what you get. Needed to try the place and glad I did. Never again though!
This is the first time we came back to this restaurant after experiencing it during a food tour. The pizzas during the tour were great but the pizzas we ordered were not so great. I had the mushroom pizza and my friend had one with ricotta cheese on it and I didn't like either too much. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly but also had ricotta cheese on it and it didn't really work and the portion was fairly small for the price. The service was great from all employees though and the wine suggestion from the bartender was spot on.
Wonderful service and ambiance. Limited menu - hard to find something that I really wanted to try. Pizzas were odd and very light on toppings. My pasta was highly recommended by the waiter but it was basically just red sauce and noodles. Fairly disappointing. The restaurant does not offer a traditional green salad ( closest thing was a fennel salad- not a fan)..However, the salami plate and fried cauliflower were excellent. Will try someplace else next time.
We had the kohlrabi salad which was a big hit. Must try! Funghi pizza was best in the bay out of the wood fired pizza oven! Service very attentive.
Food is always delicious, service was unfortunately a miss this time. I always get the grilled squid and a pizza - I could have that meal once a week, these dishes never disappoint.
Service was lackluster this visit. After a little attitude from the hostess about it being "the last table available", we were seated in the way, way back/private room, where there were other larger parties (we were the only 2 top). Our waiter was friendly when he showed up, but the key words there were "when he showed up". He had forgotten a couple of requests asked of him, most likely from being preoccupied with the other large groups in the room. Lesson learned, sit at the bar, or otherwise ask to be seated at chef's counter, or main dining room for better service.
I love the open kitchen with the wood burning oven. Great wine selection with a full bar. Menu was diverse. I had the oven roasted chicken with Brussel sprouts which was fantastic.
The grilled calendar was delicious. The pizzas were tasty - loved the crust. The pork chop was a large chop and prepared nicely. It was still so moist. Yum!
We haven't been here in a while. They changed the Testa pizza I loved so much and I hate to order "special" food. We decided to try again and ask for the pizza without the olives, it was yummy. Loved the dessert which was the chocolate semifreddo, so good.
Unfortunately, our experience was not good. The service we received was poor and inattentive at best. The busser was the only one actually paying attention to us, which is fairly common in most places honestly. The food was average all the way to inedible. So much salt and undercooked pasta! The kicker was when I received an email from opentable saying that we were a no show for our reservation. I could go into more detail, but that will just take too many words. We most likely won’t be going back there.
second visit, great food and service, wait person was great, had counter table near kitchen
I have been to A16 several times. On my first visit, they were featuring seasonal squash and the menu was delicious. I returned with a friend and again had a great meal, but an even better cocktail. This time, the pizza was ok, but was not very tasty. The drink I ordered which I forget the name of- it was a lemony drink, tasted like watery lemonade. Thankfully, the drink my friend had that she felt was good, but couldn't finish, was great!!! Bicycle thief. I would return just to get this drink. Would you mind sharing the ingredients and how to make it? I recommend this place to my friends, even though I do not always love the food, it is at least good and seasonal. The service was great and she noticed that one of the drinks was not to our liking.
We came on a weekday for lunch. Service was excellent. Great meatballs!!
They treated my boys like little princes!
Outstanding food and great service. Wonderful experience.
This was my first time at Rockridge A16. The crab salad was great (but small). The pizza (funghi + sausage pizza w/ egg) was good (and very large, definitely enough to share between two people if you're not super hungry), but slightly too burned and I wish the crust was a little crispier on the bottom. The taste was solid. The interior is nice, but it does get quite noisy when it's a full house!
We were there at 6:00 on Valentine's Day and it was not what we expected:
We did not know it was a going to be prix fixe menu with the inability to choose what we wanted -- just wish we had been told about this before.
The price was not listed on the menu, but our fault for not asking. When we received the bill, it was about $300 for dinner, 2 cocktails, tax and tip.
It was way too much food -- ended up taking much more home than we were able to eat.
My boyfriend is a vegetarian, and the only main course was beef (very good, BTW), and he was not able to have a couple of the starters/pasta. (They did accommodate him with an entree veggie dish.)
The service was incredibly slow and uneven -- took over 3 1/2 hours! Don't think it was our waiter's fault. Many people seemed to be looking around for their food, so maybe it was the timing of the kitchen? There was also a huge line waiting to come in, I assume because dinner was taking so long .
The good news is, the food was excellent! Everything we had was great.
I love A16 and their menu, and look forward to returning, but this was not the experience we had hoped for, even though the food was delicious.
