I thought that I had filled this out. I love this place but this was a weak and overpriced menu. Some places mail it in on Sunday and that seemed to be the case.
The prices have continued to climb in a way that your peers have not. $30 meatball entree - seriously?
Once again another great meal for the six of us at a 16. Wonderful service. Great sommelier. Pizza is crazy good and the porkchops were fantastic as were the salads. We travel all the way from Walnut Creek and love this place
Dinner was marred by poor service - one ditzy server can screw up the ambience. The "back room" is also not inviting and once you show up for dinner they won't necessarily have a table for you in the main room.
Wonderful chef’s counter seating.
No offense meant to Tony's in San Francisco, or all the New Englanders who swear by Sally's, or frankly any pizza place in between, the Vesuvio pizza (spicy soppressata, garlic, smoked mozzarella, chili, tomato sauce) at A16 was the best pizza my wife and I have ever eaten. Simple, but complex and layered with flavors, the spice of the chili and sausage elevating the smoke of the pizza oven and the mozzarella. The fried olives and fried cauliflower antipasti were also great, but not quite other wordly like the pizza. My wife enjoyed the Lemon ricotta gnocchi but it was a little to bland for my tastes. Nice and subtle but was washed out against the strong flavors of the antipasti and pizza.
Cocktails and wine pairings by the glass were very good as well. A wonderful evening out.
I love this place. They lost our order. We waited an hour and a half and finally got the food. They were very apologetic and sweet and I will definitely be back. Mistakes happen and it is how you handle them. Service staff—from host to wait staff were totally lovely.
Food was fantastic. I had the funghi pizza. It was excellent. Our whole table tried a bunch of different things. All good. The fried cauliflower was a standout. It is a loud but enjoyable atmosphere. Definitely would return.
Extremely overrated and expensive place that thrives on having a Neapolitan certified Pizza oven. The Pizza is OK if you like “authentic” Modern Italian Pizza, but the prices are steep for what you get. Needed to try the place and glad I did. Never again though!
This is the first time we came back to this restaurant after experiencing it during a food tour. The pizzas during the tour were great but the pizzas we ordered were not so great. I had the mushroom pizza and my friend had one with ricotta cheese on it and I didn't like either too much. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly but also had ricotta cheese on it and it didn't really work and the portion was fairly small for the price. The service was great from all employees though and the wine suggestion from the bartender was spot on.
Wonderful service and ambiance. Limited menu - hard to find something that I really wanted to try. Pizzas were odd and very light on toppings. My pasta was highly recommended by the waiter but it was basically just red sauce and noodles. Fairly disappointing. The restaurant does not offer a traditional green salad ( closest thing was a fennel salad- not a fan)..However, the salami plate and fried cauliflower were excellent. Will try someplace else next time.
We had the kohlrabi salad which was a big hit. Must try! Funghi pizza was best in the bay out of the wood fired pizza oven! Service very attentive.
Food is always delicious, service was unfortunately a miss this time. I always get the grilled squid and a pizza - I could have that meal once a week, these dishes never disappoint.
Service was lackluster this visit. After a little attitude from the hostess about it being "the last table available", we were seated in the way, way back/private room, where there were other larger parties (we were the only 2 top). Our waiter was friendly when he showed up, but the key words there were "when he showed up". He had forgotten a couple of requests asked of him, most likely from being preoccupied with the other large groups in the room. Lesson learned, sit at the bar, or otherwise ask to be seated at chef's counter, or main dining room for better service.
I love the open kitchen with the wood burning oven. Great wine selection with a full bar. Menu was diverse. I had the oven roasted chicken with Brussel sprouts which was fantastic.
The grilled calendar was delicious. The pizzas were tasty - loved the crust. The pork chop was a large chop and prepared nicely. It was still so moist. Yum!
We haven't been here in a while. They changed the Testa pizza I loved so much and I hate to order "special" food. We decided to try again and ask for the pizza without the olives, it was yummy. Loved the dessert which was the chocolate semifreddo, so good.
Unfortunately, our experience was not good. The service we received was poor and inattentive at best. The busser was the only one actually paying attention to us, which is fairly common in most places honestly. The food was average all the way to inedible. So much salt and undercooked pasta! The kicker was when I received an email from opentable saying that we were a no show for our reservation. I could go into more detail, but that will just take too many words. We most likely won’t be going back there.
second visit, great food and service, wait person was great, had counter table near kitchen
I have been to A16 several times. On my first visit, they were featuring seasonal squash and the menu was delicious. I returned with a friend and again had a great meal, but an even better cocktail. This time, the pizza was ok, but was not very tasty. The drink I ordered which I forget the name of- it was a lemony drink, tasted like watery lemonade. Thankfully, the drink my friend had that she felt was good, but couldn't finish, was great!!! Bicycle thief. I would return just to get this drink. Would you mind sharing the ingredients and how to make it? I recommend this place to my friends, even though I do not always love the food, it is at least good and seasonal. The service was great and she noticed that one of the drinks was not to our liking.
We came on a weekday for lunch. Service was excellent. Great meatballs!!
They treated my boys like little princes!
Outstanding food and great service. Wonderful experience.
This was my first time at Rockridge A16. The crab salad was great (but small). The pizza (funghi + sausage pizza w/ egg) was good (and very large, definitely enough to share between two people if you're not super hungry), but slightly too burned and I wish the crust was a little crispier on the bottom. The taste was solid. The interior is nice, but it does get quite noisy when it's a full house!
We were there at 6:00 on Valentine's Day and it was not what we expected:
We did not know it was a going to be prix fixe menu with the inability to choose what we wanted -- just wish we had been told about this before.
The price was not listed on the menu, but our fault for not asking. When we received the bill, it was about $300 for dinner, 2 cocktails, tax and tip.
It was way too much food -- ended up taking much more home than we were able to eat.
My boyfriend is a vegetarian, and the only main course was beef (very good, BTW), and he was not able to have a couple of the starters/pasta. (They did accommodate him with an entree veggie dish.)
The service was incredibly slow and uneven -- took over 3 1/2 hours! Don't think it was our waiter's fault. Many people seemed to be looking around for their food, so maybe it was the timing of the kitchen? There was also a huge line waiting to come in, I assume because dinner was taking so long .
The good news is, the food was excellent! Everything we had was great.
I love A16 and their menu, and look forward to returning, but this was not the experience we had hoped for, even though the food was delicious.
Was not impressed. Had a reservation for 9pm. Arrived at 9, but was told we would have to wait. Did so until 930. Was finally seated, and then there was a delay with the food. When it did arrive, it was fair, it was certainly not worth the $98 that was charged.
Word to the wise - order the pizza. It appeared to be the most delicious item, but was not part for the entree course, unless you claimed dietary restrictions.
The food was very great!
But despite our reservation , we waited 45 mins at the door.
When seated, we still waited around 30mins each in between appetizers, main dish, second main dish.
We appreciate a super delicious meal and are willing to pay for it, but this was very expensive and just okay. It was Valentine’s Day, so extra expensive and crowded I assume. We paid about $350 for two including the tip and wine (my husband did the pairing and I had two glasses). I probably wouldn’t go back.
Absolute train wreck of a Valentine’s Day meal. We were seated 50 minutes late and we received our first dish of a 4 course set menu 1 hr 45 minutes from our reservation time. We got the rest of the courses to go. We paid the full set meal price but were definitely ripped off. It’s a shame because we have gone many times - a16 has a couple great pizzas. No pizza on Valentine’s Day. The food wound up being mixed. Parts were flavorful and other dishes were very bland and uninteresting. Very disappointing. In fairness we have had good meals at a16 but this occasion was so poorly managed it was almost inexcusable.
Food was good but not the service on this prix fixe valentine's evening. Too long between courses, delivery of wine pairing too early/late for courses. Total meal time was 3 hours - too long for me for a weeknight!
Food was cafeteria quality mass produced with poor ingredients. Suggesting wine pairing was terrible. Very disappointed. Will not return.
We came to A16 for the prix fixe Valentine's Day dinner. The food was wonderfully prepared. Highlights included the beef with kale and potatoes au gratin, the crab salad, burrata, and desserts. There was one dish that was a tad spicy, but overall excellent food.
It was a full house and thus the service between some dishes was very slow, i.e. 20 to 30 minutes. We arrived at 5:30 pm and left at 8:15 pm. Just a bit too long, even for a special occasion.
Really bad service all the way around.
Cocktails were excellent, some of the food was very good, other dishes were so so, our Pizza arrived cold, server was disorganized...
This was our second time going. The food was delicious! We had a new waitress that wasn’t very attentive or friendly this time. The rest of the staff was friendly and welcoming. Love the ambiance!
Sat at the Chef's counter and, as usual, enjoyed watching the chefs at work. Started with the fried cauliflower, which was good starter and worked well with the Rose Champagne. Then on to the burrata (tasty, although some tough skin), lemon recotta gnocchi with cipollini (very tender), and the citrus salad (lovely way to end). The carafe of Cannanou recommended by our server was a very good match.
One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants-great for a bite or full meal. Wine selection is always wonderful. Service was a bit off the night we dined, but not off putting. Food was great-pizzas and salads.
Another great night at A16 Rockridge. At first, we were seated in the back room 'private dining' area. There were a couple of large groups which made for a lot of noise and a less than romantic atmosphere. The hostess was extremely understanding and accommodated our request to give up our table and wait for either a table in the main room or seats at the bar. We had barely started on our delicious cocktails before a bar place became available. Fantastic Neapolitan pizza, delicious wine recommendations, tasty Amaro, and great service. We feel incredibly lucky to have this gem in our neighborhood.
Went on a Saturday night - easy parking. The service was good, food was wonderful! The salumi plate was a bountiful arrangement of cured meats, in-season pickled vegetables, olives and other delicious additions - 5 stars! I usually don’t like pizza but the pizza here is fabulous! Clean ingredients and tasty. Would recommend this place to anyone. I was on a date but saw that they accommodate large groups. I would come here for the antipasto and wine alone. Prices are reasonable too!
Great pizza plus other food
It is pricey but also super yummy.
Disappointed and surprised that it was not a good dining experience. Some food portions were ridiculously small. Server forgot to mention that the place ran out of pork chops. Had 3 different servers in total. All meals were initially served to the wrong people in our party. Main entrees took much too long to be served. The best part of the meal was seeing Shaun Livingston of the Warriors!
For a Top 100 restaurant, this should have been materially better!
Solid food and service. Staff always great and knowledgeable about the menu. They’re fun and professional. Food never disappoints.
