Delicious and unique pizzas. Had the Montanara pizza which was exceptional. Only complaint is that the restaurant is quite loud.
My most recent experience at A16 was as delicious as ever. The beet salad was easily large enough to be shared with a tasty balance of beets and cheese on a bed of arugula. The pork chop was perfectly cooked with a hazelnut and dried fruit garnish, the perfect amount of sweetness to counterbalance the meat. And Bombolini, Italian donuts, fresh and hot--lovely. Service was excellent. Love this place.
Greatest Pizza ever! The menu is creative, the staff talented and knowledgeable- can I give them a 7? Better than 5 Stars!
Lovely belated Valentines dinner at A16 Oakland......soppressata pizza an absolute must!
Really enjoyed the menu and great wine list!
The ambiance of the restaurant is very good, and you feel like you’re in a fancy modern/chic environment when you come in and dine. The service is fairly solid too, our waitress was very timely and helpful and professional. Unfortunately, the food simply was not very good. And I don’t mean for the price (as in, good but not worth the price). I mean the food was not worthwhile at any price point. And neither were the drinks. It was shockingly subpar. The best thing we had was a glass of wine and we resolved to just grab a bite later in the night.
Given it was Valentine's Day, we expected no tables until much later in the evening. But we were able to get one at 6 pm. We were also seated in a separate room, away from the main dining area and the noise level there was more tolerable which made conversation - without yelling - possible. Food was excellent as was the wine list (dominated by Italian selections). The service was good; we didn't see our server much, but there was always someone checking in on us.
First time for us, great service and food, definitely going back!
We had dinner at A16 on Valentine's Day. The menu was not the usual one but the choices are quite large to accommodate every taste. The food was in general surprisingly good considering that the chef had to work harder than usual. The same is true for the service staff. We plan to come back during their regular days.
Great food! Pizza is outstanding!
Salads were good, calamari needed sea salt, pizza very good, wines very good. That back room is awful - needs serious design work - sound damping, lighting, seating set-up. Detracted from experience by half.
Great feel excellent food and service
Happy Valentines Day!!
Third time we’ve tried this restaurant...and definitely the last. With all the fine dining in Oakland, I am amazed A16 has survived. Very disappointed.
Been many times and had a stellar experience. So I’ll give this one a pass, but wow. Service was absolutely abysmal. Spilled water. Didn’t clean it. Forgetful. Slow. Inattentive.
Also, they spread toddlers everywhere so no way to have an “adult” corner where we could talk. Oakland parents of toddlers are self-entitled jerks (not the restaurant’s fault), so the noise level was not cool either.
Very noisy!! Young and hip crowd shouts all the way, no way to find a quiet corner.
The thin crust pizza had no crispness, chewy, although cooked thru. Few toppings and overly salty sardines.
Gelato didn’t taste much like lemon.
Not our kind of place.
Been a fan and loyal customer for years. Always a class act
We keep trying A16 and it just keeps failing. It SEEMS like it should be so good! The decor, ambiance, energy, menu (on paper) are all excellent. But the service and food have fallen so short, and at this price point, with Belotti right down the block, I think we're ready to give up. Misstep on one visit is an accident, twice is a bad coincidence, but 3... 4... 5... separate visits... yikes.
On this specific evening:
- Seated at a table that should not exist, cramped into a corner in the main thoroughfare for servers and bussers
- Waited 10+ minutes for someone to stop by our table for drink service (we brought wine, so literally just waiting for someone to notice the bottle and stop at our table), 15+ minutes longer to put in food order.
- Server brought out dessert menus before our entree was served, had no idea what was going on with our table
- Served wrong entree, got to wait even *longer* for it to be remade
- Food was expensive and mediocre... as always. My pizza was a good idea on paper but bland and dry in delivery. My date's pasta was fine, nothing to write home about, especially at this price point. Cheese plate was super sad and flavorless :(
They did comp corkage as an apology for the errors. Nice to get the acknowledgment (half-hearted, I don't know if the words "we're sorry" actually were even uttered) but honestly the whole experience sucked and that didn't really make up for it.
With friends and we had an outstanding meal from cocktails to dessert. The appetizer selection was super, we had the roasted calamari and salad. The pizzas are a definite 10. We had the wild mushrooms and pork sausage. Both pizzas were with the white sauce. Desserts were gelatos, chocolate tart, and a pistachio tart. Like I said we had a super meal with our friends.
Arrive 5 mins early for our 9:00 reservation. Seated right away as the table was ready. The SAT. And SAT. And SAT. After about 15 minutes of being acknowledged by absolutely no one, waiter comes over with water and asks if we’d like to order a cocktail. No apology for making us sit there for 15 minutes. “No, I think we’re ready to order”. Then proceeds to tell us that 2 of their 3 entrees are not available. What?!? 1) you have a limited menu to begin with. 2) you should be able to plan appropriately for an evening of cooking - you’re a restaurant for Chrissake.
Got up and walked out.
Seriously, this place is WAY past it’s prime. Time for some new blood in that spot.
It’s so nice to be eating at the bar when there is a good bartender, great drinks, and interesting conversation. The Dungeness crab was huge and delish!
Friendly service great food
Great server, wonderful food, too noisy (names conversation across the table and even next to you a challenge. Might be helpful to enclose the entrance area more as on cold nights such as ours nearby tables get a blast of cold air as people enter and exit. Also, parking can be a challenger (but that’s not unique to this establishment; it’s true all along and around College Ave).
Having had a terrible meal at A16 several years ago I was pleasantly surprised to have a much better experience. The food was improved and edible this time. While the wait staff was very nice and mostly attentive the wait times for everything from water to the main courses was a bit slow. We ended up spending three hours there!
The service was very slow and incompetent.
Always an enjoyable experience. The pizza is second to none and their wine list is deep (the knowledgeable staff always come through with great suggestions).
Food, service and ambience are great. A perfect place to celebrate special events or have a good meal & drink at the bar.
very nice place, great food and service, we like sitting at the bar along the kitchen, fun watching pizzas being made and oven being used to prepare the first courses.
Very nice Monday dinner....salumi plate, Monterey Squid, Pork Meatballs w/Fennel Salad, two real authentic hot pizzas and two wonderful pastas incl aldente Bucatini w/dungeness crab. Josh in the bar whipping up some mean drinks. Service overall was outstanding. Plenty of parking in next door public library so hit road to A16......
As always, the food was fantastic and the service friendly. We got a late reservation on a Saturday evening so the place was busy, busy. A16 is a bit pricey, but it delivers.
Pizza was ok.
Prices, given kinds of selections, were astronomical.
Drink menu listed a gin requested at $12 (Sapphire) but when served as a Martini, charged $17, the average price for an appetizer!
All this likely due to New Year's Eve pricing. Still a huge disappointment as previous visits have been memorable.
Have loved this place since they were in the city. Always great quality and service.
We celebrate my moms birthday. The food was absolutely amazing and our waiter Jeffery was fantastic
Great neighborhood restaurant. The good was fresh and very flavorful. Friendly service in a somewhat frenetic atmosphere. Love this restaurant though and would definitely recommend it.
Outstanding food in a Sicilian vein, and excellent service. Once the restaurant fills, however, the noise level is extreme.
The service was super slow. I confirmed with the restaurant when checking if they received my note to make sure there was a birthday cake at the end of our dinner. It was supposed to be a surprise. They just handed us the bill after we said that we didn’t want anything else. Was I supposed to go out of my way to remind them again? It was a slower Sunday night so I can’t blame them for being busy. I just felt like they didn’t care to look into the Open table notes and add it onto the tab, then serve it.
I wish the pizza's bottom crust had not been soggy.
We loved A16, though it is a bit on the expensive side for entrees. Salad portions are large and delicious. Pizzas are thé thing to order and they are outstanding. Very kind and knowledgeable servers and a fun atmosphere! Will definitely return!
We were treated to a wonderful dinner for our birthdays. The food was all consistent and balanced for a foodie’s dream come true
Nice Rockridge dining option if you’re in the mood for Italian food and wine.
