I wish the pizza's bottom crust had not been soggy.
We loved A16, though it is a bit on the expensive side for entrees. Salad portions are large and delicious. Pizzas are thé thing to order and they are outstanding. Very kind and knowledgeable servers and a fun atmosphere! Will definitely return!
We were treated to a wonderful dinner for our birthdays. The food was all consistent and balanced for a foodie’s dream come true
Nice Rockridge dining option if you’re in the mood for Italian food and wine.
We had an amazing meal with birthday friends. The only issue that we had was that the menu was in Italian and no one could read the menu. I think the Italian is fine, but should have an English translation below. We almost ordered beef tongue, and 2 of our party were vegetarian. Our waitress was great to point it out. It was a really great place and not too noisy as it was Sunday. The staff was beyond good. I would certain recommend. Our friends really enjoyed it too. The food was excellent. We will come again and again.
Food excellent. Our server Emma was fantastic.
I always the love the food here, but sometimes the service can be inconsistent. This time the service was perfect - attentive and very helpful. Thank you!
Wonderful as always.
We had made an 8pm reservation in advance for a Friday night for 5 adults and 1 toddler, but we were kept waiting for almost 40 minutes! The staff claimed that there were two tables they needed to combine to crate a long table for us, but diners were sitting and chatting at both tables even after having paid their checks—and they were loath to tell them to leave. Shouldn’t they have mentioned to both sets of diners at the outset that they needed those tables by 8pm for a large party? I am suffering from ball-of-foot pain and couldn’t keep standing for so long, and finally had to ask for a bar chair to sit down on to relieve my discomfort. They gave us each a glass of Prosecco halfway through our wait, but that does not make up for our lengthy inconvenience, especially with a tired toddler in our party clinging to her standing dad’s arms. In fact, we had to finally insist around 8:30pm that their manager ask the remaining two diners to move to the bar, which took them another reluctant 10 more minutes to follow through on—and the two ladies were actually happy to move to the bar to continue their conversation!
Once we were finally seated, the food came out reasonably quick and was pretty good overall: fried olives, burrata with toast, thin-crust pizzas—except for my vegetarian friend’s pumpkin-topped pizza, which had an oddly thick crust and was a bit too sweet for her taste. The arancini dolci (rice-crusted balls with chocolate) ordered for dessert were a bit too fried on the outside.
Our waiter however seemed to have a bit of an attitude about him, and while we were in the midst of ordering and asking him questions about the menu, even told us to “not get so excited”! Seriously, dude?!
We were wondering if they would at least comp us for one or both of the desserts or the appetizers due to the long wait and inconvenience we faced, but no such luck.
food and service was very nice, enjoyed the place, classified as neighborhood place.
Great date nite location!
Everything we ordered was delicious and loved my martini.
Can't wait to go back.
We love A16! Always great food and wine. Our anniversary dinner was great!
Great food and great wait staff. They did forget a request on my pizza and forgot to box it up for take home when asked. But I would come back.
The food was absolutely outstanding!! However, the service was very sloppy! The waiter would disappear for long periods of time and we would have to flag down another staff member for water, drinks, silverware etc. Our coffee came and 20 minutes later after we had finished the coffee our desserts arrived. The poor service was definitely the only downside to the experience but for a the price you pay this restaurant should definitely address the issue with it’s staff!!
The food, wine and service were all solid. The restaurant has an amazing vibe with attentive staff and the food offerings are updated classics. Definitely order a pizza to share. The dough flavor is perfect. The dough to sauce to topping ratio highlights the simple but robust flavors. Make sure to save room for dessert! The sorbet and the chocolate dessert played well together and as the server promised, paired well with the wine. She did not disappoint. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. But we went with our server’s suggestions from beginning to end and she did not lead us astray! This is a great spot for a simple date or dinner with friends. But can also be dressed up for a special occasion.
Great pizza and cocktails
We sat in the bar area. Josh was attentive and helped make many recommendations upon our request.
Out of items like meatballs or calamari a lot of the time
Johana was amazing. Great recommendations food and wine.
everything tasted great but the pizza is what to come for! very extensive and good wine list too!
awesome place for a bday dinner! will definitely be back!
Price of food was high compared to quality and quantity (especially the wine). The salumi platter was great. WAY too noisy for old folks. No return engagement for us.
Food was great as usual. Service not as great, which has also been my experience i in the past
Way too noisy even at 6pm before the main crowd. Melanzana pizza was a bad choice but trout and squid ink with shellfish good. Please ask chef to find a recipe for mela stregata and add it on the dessert menu. The drinks were all superb, somellier wonderful and knowledgeable. The strega was amazing and italian gin superb as was the Montepulchiano Abrizzo he recommended.
Our server was astounding - unflappable, unbelievably upbeat without seeming even remotely insincere. every moment of her service was 100%, A+, 12/10. I could go on. We loved the restaurant and Joanna (Johanna?) made it really shine.
The best pizza, good service, no complaints 👌😍😋
Fish of the day and steak were very good. Pizza marinara and pork chop were not as good. Very noisy! Very slow service and not particularly attentive wait staff.
Birthday! Fabulous meal and service! Wine outstanding, but you knew that! 😀
Very disappointed in our food but most the SLOW service. No apologies for it taking nearly an hour for our two pizzas to arrive. They were okay but not fabulous and had cooled by the time they arrived. Beans in our side dish were undercooked. The place is incredibly noisy. We won't go back.
Pizza was excellent and the appetizers were good as well. Bucatini was bland; probably should have ordered something a little more adventurous.
This place is a fantastic neighborhood option, fantastic food and easy to get to.
Authentic wood oven pizzas at around $22 are still the best bet. Connor, the new guy served in an outstanding manner. Price wise, A16 is getting pretty tough on the wallet but that’s dining everywhere in the Bay Area unfortunately.......LOL!!
First off, I've been here many times throughout the years. All times were excellent. I was surprised this night fell short. The food had hits and misses. The fried pizza was super! But the pork chop was cooked unevenly. Some parts good, others a bit too pink. And sour cherries that came with the pork chops were crazy sour! Similar to the passion fruit sorbet. If you like something that will curl your toes, those two items would do it. Lastly, service. It wasn't bad, but very uneven. For our party of 5, everyone's food came out as it came, but one person's was quite a bit later than everyone else's. And it happened again at dessert. All the desserts came out, but one lonely espresso came out much later than everything else. I'm guessing it was an off night. I'd still come again, but I was hoping for consistency, since I brought my folks here for dinner. They weren't impressed.
Food was ok. Service was poor.
Great food. Missed on service. Dessert was served long after the espresso was finished. Birthday celebration was indicated on the reservation but not even acknowledged by anyone.
Waiter was very respectful of our business conversation.
If you’ve ever wondered about southern Italian cuisine, take the A16 to College Avenue in Oakland’s Rockridge district and you’ll find out. Food, wine and service are excellent, and the pizza is great. Try it, you’ll like it!
PS - the A16 is the Italian Autostrada highway that cuts across from Naples to Canosa di Puglia...
Tried a new Wine recommended. Amazing. Southern Italy wines are amazing. The pork chop was the best I’ve ever had. Flavor on top of flavor. Will be. Ack. A favorite! Highly recommend!!!
I really like the pizza here. The only negative is that it can be really loud when busy.
Always good, but very expensive. Fortunately at A16 you do get what you pay for.
