We’ve been to this restaurant a lot and unfortunately have experienced a decline in service and food taste. Regarding service, in a nutshell, it’s been becoming very slow and apathetic. We waited almost 15 min before our sever took our drink order and this has happened other times that we’ve been there. The service doesn’t get any better after that either...had to wave her/him down a lot. I usually get the trout and it’s usually amazing. The last two times have been tasteless and dry. Also the fried artichokes are so good but the portion is so ridiculously small for the price, that it’s comical. The ingredients are not expensive so I don’t get it. Not sure if I’ll be back. It’s a shame because it’s a wonderful restaurant with a great vibe and unique wine list.
We love A16! The pizzas are so delicious! We had the burrata and the calamari to start. So good! Thanks for a great dining experience!
Incredibile food and service, as always. A16 is definitely becoming my favorite restaurant in Oakland.
Love the food at A16! We went for a birthday dinner (second year in a row), so I guess we have a tradition. Between three of us we shared the roasted asparagus salad and the kohlrabi salad. The asparagus salad had a weird sort of pate of what was supposed to be walnut pesto smeared on the plate. It was unappetizing to look at and lacked flavor. The asparagus were delicious, however. The kohlrabi salad was wonderful and we devoured it. We shared two pizza: the Montanara, which was good, but a little boring, and the Racchetta which was absolutely outstanding. We also shared two desserts - the almond cake and a sort of semi freddo with berries. Both were delicious. My only complaints would be that the service was slow and it was difficult to get anyone's attention to ask a question or order more wine. It was also rather chilly inside, and really about 5 degrees below comfortable. Our reservations were for 6:30, and although we arrived early, our seating options were a bit limited. It was a little dark inside (rainy evening), and as I mentioned . . . chilly.
Wow. I’ve seen the crowds at this place and finally got around to trying it. The pasta was crunchy and salty. The Aperol spritz was the smallest I’ve ever been served. The pizza toppings were all on one side. And we were seated in the corner of the back room where we got to sit and stare at three filthy light switches. We will never go back. Save your money and go to Creekwood or Belotti for better food and service for less money.
Way too cold in the restaurant — apparently the oven acts as a suction which pulls all the cold air into the restaurant. The waitress told me this and she also told me where I was sitting was actually one of the warmer areas. However,I was freezing. For those prices, it was not worth it.
They need to install some sort of velvet curtain to stop the cold air from coming in the front door
We had 6:45pm reservations on Mother’s Day. We were seated and immediately told they were out of half the food on the small menu. Knowing that Mother’s Day is a hugely busy restaurant day this kind of made sense. We had yummy drinks and a delicious charcuterie plate and ordered. 20 minutes later we were told they were out of one of the items we ordered. Ugh! The staff seemed TOTALLY in the weeds. The food that arrived was delicious but we were shorted one side dish that came after our meal was almost finished. Some of our side dishes were cold. But what made us the most upset about our experience was when we were ready to pay our server disappeared.... actually we could see her snacking and chatting with a fellow server standing near the service window. Finally we all stood up and she came to take our money. I understand it was a busy night BUT I think for the prices charged and the experience proposed that A16 needs to do better job. I am not sure we will return.
It was great!
A-16 is consistently top notch. We’re here a couple of times a month and never find ourselves leaving disappointed with the food.
It is a “safe” menu in that you can confidently order any item and know it will be prepared with the best possible ingredients and care. This makes it easy to try interesting new things you might not be familiar with. The menu is a mix of seasonal delicacies combined with standby favorites- if you want something new it will be on there, but if you want something familiar, that will be there for you too.
A-16 may not be the most economical meal, but quality costs and you get what you pay for here. We enjoy sitting at the pizza counter where we get dinner and a show. The glow of the oven, the rhythmic dance of the pizzaiolo, and sitting side by side provide a great ambiance.
Staff are busy - it’s a pretty large restaurant and can get chaotic, but they are all sincerely concerned with you having a good time, getting what you need, and enjoying your food. Glitches happen, but they’re super forgivable when you look around and everyone’s working their tail off. Let them know kindly and it will get fixed.
I took my partner to A16 for our anniversary and it was a wonderful date! We shared the burrata appetizer and 2 pizzas and all the food was phenomenal. I had marked that it was our anniversary in the notes for this reservation and the staff were so thoughtful and excited for us to be there celebrating. I would absolutely return to A16...that rachetta pizza was what dreams are made of (cheese and bread, in case that wasn’t clear.)
The food is great, but the service gets worse every time we go - they are very busy and can't seem to keep up. The individual servers are fine, so I assume it's an organizational thing. We would go more often if the service was better.
The food and service here are consistently excellent. We started with two appetizers: fried artichoke and asparagus salad. Both were great. We moved on to pizzas, which are always superb.
We've been here a couple of times over the past few years but this time was particularly excellent, placing A16 now firmly in our favorite restaurant list. The Salsiccia pizza I had was exquisite as was the roasted asparagus salad. The chocolate tarte was memorable and will undoubtedly have me going back again before long. Service was especially sweet with Emma. Thank you A16 for attention to excellence in all areas.
Service consistently slow at this place
The service was great, extremely nice servers! My pizza and my daughter ‘s pizza was delicious, believe or not, I am talking about a slightly fried pizza, with buffalo cheese and I had prosciutto added. My husband ordered the trout, which was passable but too expensive for being passable, around $38. Time to look for a new patisserie, the chocolate pudding consisted of a hard cake or cookie with a dollop of a chocolate cream, which was left almost completely on the plate, and I always finish my desserts! The place is worth for its pizza only!
We love A16 in Rockridge. The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and attentive (just the right amount). The menu is broad and offers great selections. The cocktails and wine selection are fantastic - definitely take the staff up on what they recommend. A16 also focuses on seasonal dishes and has relationships with local North Bay farms, artisans etc which was something we loved hearing. The pizzas are great. The pricing makes is a special place, but definitely a go to!
appetizers were good, drinks were good, pasta was a little salty, and dessert were excellent. the ambiance was very clean and fun. prices were good. be warned that primi is a light meal here, so order appetizers and/pizza if you will not order a secondi.
Food is generally good, but pizza overrated and soggy. Service is well-meaning, but poor communication with the kitchen leads to bad timing issues - like apps coming to table before drinks and not all diners at the table being served at the same time. Too bad ... feels like management just doesn't care. And we've experienced this lackluster service more than once. I think it's time for us to move on from A16. Further, back room is quiet (good for seniors), but poorly set up, so that diners in there feel like they're being hidden away and not getting the same experience as the main dining room.
It was fine. It’s been great in the past and the food was just ok this time. The calamari was fishy and chewy. It the pasta was amazing. Host desk and bartender were great, but waitress wasn’t great. Probably won’t go back for a while.
What a disappointment. Small menu that I was hoping delicious. Food was boring, tasteless, dull and insipid. Drove 40 minutes for good pasta, but A16 did not deliver. Restaurant is pretty inside with a massive oven. Change the chef!!!
Pasta was incredibly salty and more than “al dente” it was more like crunchy pasta.
The beef tasteless and not fresh at all.
Fried artichoke was incredibly tasteless and raw.
Pizza was “meh”
We brought a bottle of wine and they did not offer a decanter.
The hostess was a kid with a very messy hair and attitude.
Was really poor dining experience for $300 meal.
Two stars for environment only.
We had such an amazing time! The staff was wonderful and created an excellent birthday experience for my boyfriend!
Food was amazing (the bosco was the best pizza we’ve ever had!)
The pizza was wonderful! The crust is so light and the toppings rich and flavorful. The lettuce salad was the perfect addition—so simple and tasty!! Our only negative was the loud volume in the restaurant. A large group was eating and dominated the room. We’ll be back for sure!!
Service was very very slow.
Slow and mediocre.
Restaurant was very busy and service, perhaps for that reason, was spotty. Our table of four was in the bar area and the noise level was extremely loud. The food was generally quite good, however.
Sat near the bar which made it noisy. Food was good but service was so so.
this is a lovely place with delicious food. Our server was darling and very knowledgeable about the wines and the food. She was attentive and helpful. It was quiet and pleasant at 6 but by 7 was very loud and tables very close. The pizza was very good and the artichoke excellent. Our only issue was the price was very high. $28 for a very small, thin pizza was a bit much. Would recommend overall for the experience.
Reliable quality with seasonal dishes changing frequently. Great cocktails too.
Food delivered on expectations but service was so-so.
Been there several times, and food was consistent consistent with previous experience and solid. Service was really slow. We arrived early to have a drink at the bar, and after 30 minutes we were still waiting, and finally our table was ready, so we decided to get one at the table. Took another 30 minutes after we were seated to finally get a drink. When we made them aware, they offered to comp an entree, but then explained that it would also be a smaller entree than usual because they were actually out of what we ordered.
For a business like this with multiple locations and predictable high-volume on Saturday night, they should have the operations running more smoothly.
A little pricey, and limited entrees.. but good appetizers and pizza! Quite loud and lively bar, so don’t expect a quiet evening.
Wonderful pizza. Great waitress and service
The menu requires a translator which is probably why they sell so much pizza. Kind of pretentious and overnights. So noisy you can’t talk to the people you’re dining with without reading lips. Roasted squid was flavorless. Very high prices.
Simply outstanding food and wine selections. The salads and Neapolitan pizzas were excellent as usual. The pacing of service was a little off, particularly at the end of the meal but the servers were pleasant and knowledgeable.
Service was slow. Our server did a good job but it appeared that she might have been the only server. One entree came out and the second one came out 20 minutes after the first one
The food is excellent. The service took a very long time for a Sunday night.
Shared two wood fired pizzas with a nice starter beet salad. Added an egg to their ‘funghi’ pizza - reminded me of my favorite pizza at Speedy Romeo in Brooklyn called the ‘kind brother’ wild mushroom, smoked mozzarella, farm egg, sage. Unpretentious but attentive server. The dessert, an almond cake with candied and fresh citrus was the surprise highlight!
Brought out-of-town friends. Always amazing pizza and pastas. The oysters with the pollen infused marionette was absolutely amazing. Got the last 3 and so glad. Could have eaten a dozen!
This is such a welcoming place; everyone seems to have a smile for you. The food is creative and interesting, prepared with attention to detail, using wonderful seasonal ingredients and unusual touches. The almond cake is deceptively innocent looking, but makes an amazing finale for your meal. No wonder this is one of my dinner companion's favorite go-to spots!
