Always love the chefs table and getting to talk with the skilled cooks. The pistachio apricot? Peach? Tart was fantastic. New pastry chef seems to be doing great work.
The food is great but the service is flat out terrible. I would recommend, but with a warning about the service.
Monday is pork meatball night, served in a tangy tomato sauce without the spaghetti like in Italy. Love their salumi board and spicy Vesuvio pizza with the anchovies. Their homemade chili oil is perfect on the pizza. The saltiness of all three pairs superb with a tallboy of Laughing Monk’s Holy Ghost Pilsner made in SF. Service is very professional and friendly by the A16 staff.
A- rating overall. Pizza, salad and calamari appetizer were all first rate. Bucatini pasta had to much lemon, but was good.
We were seated promptly. A table at the front window. The wait person had a wonderful personality. I felt like calling her Nonna. Great wine selection.
A16 has become one of my absolute favorites over the past couple of years--especially this last visit when I found myself needing to make choices from a keto diet plan, I fell in love. To be able to choose from several delicious proteins and choose a side dish is so supportive. I chose the pork chop with a little hazelnut and roasted peach garnish with a side of roasted summer squash. The pork chop was cooked to perfection and the squash mixture was excellent. Both the kohlrabi salad and the little gem were perfectly dressed, subtle and flavorful. My partner had the chicken which had a tasty crispy skin; it included a thigh and a tender breast. Oh, yes, we started with the salumi platter and burrata. Divine. Needless to say there were lots of leftovers as the portions are generous. Service was attentive. We will return, and soon. The pork chop is calling.
One night, our server couldn’t remember much and we had to ask at least twice. It was a very busy evening on Tuesday.
Another night, we sat at the bar to watch the Warriors game 6 on Wednesday. The bartender was very attentive as the evening was quiet.
Monday night they offer pork meatballs in a tangy Sicilian style tomato sauce and it’s really a cool tapas plate to go with that required first drink of the day. Love the saltiness of the Salumi board to go with their can hops selection of beer. Asparagus grilled and chilled pairs well with a Pinot Noir too. Like to order a side of marinated butter lettuce to use as wraps for the cold cuts. And that is drinking Italian style and also KETO if you forgive the carbs from booze......LOL!!
Foodie destination? Awesome service? Great atmosphere? No way on Earth. We read the reviews and came by for dinner. Naturally, the following happened: had to flag down our waiter to order drinks. Pizza heavy menu. Overpriced. Loud. And the last straw? Waiter approached us with the bill and asked if we wanted any dessert. Message: Get out — we want your table. Well, gladly. Save your money and head over to Oliveto for a completely opposite experience.
Food, wine and ambience all fine. Service staff amiable but not always attentive.
Took way to long to seat us, but after we got seated the entire evening was wonderful
Terrible service. We left waiting for drinks after 40 minutes
The air conditioning was on so high it was freezing inside the restaurant. We will not be returning
Loved the ambiance including the artwork of Kerry Turnstall. The small plates/appetizers were freshly prepared and there was enough variety/selection of main course.
Fantastic service from the minute we walked in the door. Best pork chop I have ever had, and that is saying something!
Great Italian like in Italy! Had the fried olives, salumi platter, clam pasta Buchatine and spicy Vesuvio pizza, of course with anchovies. Ended with peach sorbet and confections and lots of water!! Their house Pinot Noir is Kutch so it went well with the entrees. Their bar needs another TV mega screen, too bad Dubs lost Gm1........
Server was very nice but the food took a really long time to come out. There was a big party in the back but was surprising that the kitchen couldn't easily accommodate other customers too on a relatively quiet Tuesday night. Also they seemed to be out of a lot of things on the menu which was disappointing.
May 26 dinner for 6. A16 is one of our favorite restaurants and we go often. However this last visit was the worst based on service or lack of. Wine we order finally came after about 30 minutes. We kept asking about where it was & staff would disappear. After saying they were out, finally they said they found a bottle. Waiter tried to take a food order before he asked for our beverage/cocktail order. Once we placed our order, it took an extraordinary length of time to get our food. This is just not representative of the many times we have enjoyed A16 in the past. Please retrain or get better staff. Food was still perfect as always
Food ok. Expensive. Slow service and waited for everything. We were not in a hurry but slow. Garbage in planter out front and told staff but still there when we left. Not many options if you don’t want pizza. All pretty expensive.
Food was delicious, fresh, authentic... pasta special was overly salty and should have been tasted prior to bringing out. Great texture and ingredients though. Pizza was amazing.
I have been a big fan of A16 for many years and a 16 then Rockbridge is no exception. This is one of the best day of friendliest and pleasing service restaurants in the bay area. The food is excellent, very very fresh and very tasty. The added bonus of the 16 in Oakland is a full bar with fantastic bartenders. A16 has it enormous knowledgeOf Italian wines especially the ones from Campania. Finish it off with a tasty dessert. It’s a can’t miss Restaurant and I recommend very highly.
We’ve been to this restaurant a lot and unfortunately have experienced a decline in service and food taste. Regarding service, in a nutshell, it’s been becoming very slow and apathetic. We waited almost 15 min before our sever took our drink order and this has happened other times that we’ve been there. The service doesn’t get any better after that either...had to wave her/him down a lot. I usually get the trout and it’s usually amazing. The last two times have been tasteless and dry. Also the fried artichokes are so good but the portion is so ridiculously small for the price, that it’s comical. The ingredients are not expensive so I don’t get it. Not sure if I’ll be back. It’s a shame because it’s a wonderful restaurant with a great vibe and unique wine list.
We love A16! The pizzas are so delicious! We had the burrata and the calamari to start. So good! Thanks for a great dining experience!
Incredibile food and service, as always. A16 is definitely becoming my favorite restaurant in Oakland.
Love the food at A16! We went for a birthday dinner (second year in a row), so I guess we have a tradition. Between three of us we shared the roasted asparagus salad and the kohlrabi salad. The asparagus salad had a weird sort of pate of what was supposed to be walnut pesto smeared on the plate. It was unappetizing to look at and lacked flavor. The asparagus were delicious, however. The kohlrabi salad was wonderful and we devoured it. We shared two pizza: the Montanara, which was good, but a little boring, and the Racchetta which was absolutely outstanding. We also shared two desserts - the almond cake and a sort of semi freddo with berries. Both were delicious. My only complaints would be that the service was slow and it was difficult to get anyone's attention to ask a question or order more wine. It was also rather chilly inside, and really about 5 degrees below comfortable. Our reservations were for 6:30, and although we arrived early, our seating options were a bit limited. It was a little dark inside (rainy evening), and as I mentioned . . . chilly.
Wow. I’ve seen the crowds at this place and finally got around to trying it. The pasta was crunchy and salty. The Aperol spritz was the smallest I’ve ever been served. The pizza toppings were all on one side. And we were seated in the corner of the back room where we got to sit and stare at three filthy light switches. We will never go back. Save your money and go to Creekwood or Belotti for better food and service for less money.
Way too cold in the restaurant — apparently the oven acts as a suction which pulls all the cold air into the restaurant. The waitress told me this and she also told me where I was sitting was actually one of the warmer areas. However,I was freezing. For those prices, it was not worth it.
They need to install some sort of velvet curtain to stop the cold air from coming in the front door
We had 6:45pm reservations on Mother’s Day. We were seated and immediately told they were out of half the food on the small menu. Knowing that Mother’s Day is a hugely busy restaurant day this kind of made sense. We had yummy drinks and a delicious charcuterie plate and ordered. 20 minutes later we were told they were out of one of the items we ordered. Ugh! The staff seemed TOTALLY in the weeds. The food that arrived was delicious but we were shorted one side dish that came after our meal was almost finished. Some of our side dishes were cold. But what made us the most upset about our experience was when we were ready to pay our server disappeared.... actually we could see her snacking and chatting with a fellow server standing near the service window. Finally we all stood up and she came to take our money. I understand it was a busy night BUT I think for the prices charged and the experience proposed that A16 needs to do better job. I am not sure we will return.
It was great!
A-16 is consistently top notch. We’re here a couple of times a month and never find ourselves leaving disappointed with the food.
It is a “safe” menu in that you can confidently order any item and know it will be prepared with the best possible ingredients and care. This makes it easy to try interesting new things you might not be familiar with. The menu is a mix of seasonal delicacies combined with standby favorites- if you want something new it will be on there, but if you want something familiar, that will be there for you too.
A-16 may not be the most economical meal, but quality costs and you get what you pay for here. We enjoy sitting at the pizza counter where we get dinner and a show. The glow of the oven, the rhythmic dance of the pizzaiolo, and sitting side by side provide a great ambiance.
Staff are busy - it’s a pretty large restaurant and can get chaotic, but they are all sincerely concerned with you having a good time, getting what you need, and enjoying your food. Glitches happen, but they’re super forgivable when you look around and everyone’s working their tail off. Let them know kindly and it will get fixed.
I took my partner to A16 for our anniversary and it was a wonderful date! We shared the burrata appetizer and 2 pizzas and all the food was phenomenal. I had marked that it was our anniversary in the notes for this reservation and the staff were so thoughtful and excited for us to be there celebrating. I would absolutely return to A16...that rachetta pizza was what dreams are made of (cheese and bread, in case that wasn’t clear.)
The food is great, but the service gets worse every time we go - they are very busy and can't seem to keep up. The individual servers are fine, so I assume it's an organizational thing. We would go more often if the service was better.
The food and service here are consistently excellent. We started with two appetizers: fried artichoke and asparagus salad. Both were great. We moved on to pizzas, which are always superb.
We've been here a couple of times over the past few years but this time was particularly excellent, placing A16 now firmly in our favorite restaurant list. The Salsiccia pizza I had was exquisite as was the roasted asparagus salad. The chocolate tarte was memorable and will undoubtedly have me going back again before long. Service was especially sweet with Emma. Thank you A16 for attention to excellence in all areas.
Service consistently slow at this place
The service was great, extremely nice servers! My pizza and my daughter ‘s pizza was delicious, believe or not, I am talking about a slightly fried pizza, with buffalo cheese and I had prosciutto added. My husband ordered the trout, which was passable but too expensive for being passable, around $38. Time to look for a new patisserie, the chocolate pudding consisted of a hard cake or cookie with a dollop of a chocolate cream, which was left almost completely on the plate, and I always finish my desserts! The place is worth for its pizza only!
We love A16 in Rockridge. The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and attentive (just the right amount). The menu is broad and offers great selections. The cocktails and wine selection are fantastic - definitely take the staff up on what they recommend. A16 also focuses on seasonal dishes and has relationships with local North Bay farms, artisans etc which was something we loved hearing. The pizzas are great. The pricing makes is a special place, but definitely a go to!
appetizers were good, drinks were good, pasta was a little salty, and dessert were excellent. the ambiance was very clean and fun. prices were good. be warned that primi is a light meal here, so order appetizers and/pizza if you will not order a secondi.
Food is generally good, but pizza overrated and soggy. Service is well-meaning, but poor communication with the kitchen leads to bad timing issues - like apps coming to table before drinks and not all diners at the table being served at the same time. Too bad ... feels like management just doesn't care. And we've experienced this lackluster service more than once. I think it's time for us to move on from A16. Further, back room is quiet (good for seniors), but poorly set up, so that diners in there feel like they're being hidden away and not getting the same experience as the main dining room.
