A Cote Ratings and Reviews
Perfect for a get-together with an out-of-town friend! When friends visit, I always want to show off the best of the Oakland dining scene. I had not been to A Cote for years, but it used to be one of my favorites. And I was looking for somewhere closer to home rather than the trendy Uptown area. A Cote fit the bill. The atmosphere was ideal for conversation; we felt very comfortable and inclined to linger at our table. The service was attentive and the food delivery well-spaced, which doesn't always happen at small-plates type restaurants. Some of the food was quite creative - my friend loved the sweet and spicy chutney that topped the butternut squash soup - and it was all very well-prepared. I had a lovely glass of an unusual wine from the Greek Islands, and my friend had an excellent cocktail. I will bring more people here soon!
I have been to A Cote several times and have always had a pleasant experience. But this time was such a disappointment. I had a reservation at 5:30pm and had noted that we'd arrive around 5:20pm, 10 minutes before the restaurant opens. In fact, we did arrive at 5:20pm, but the girl who was working at the bar almost threw us out! She said that they weren't open yet and that they were still preparing as she was drying the glasses. It was cold outside and I asked whether we should leave and the answer was, "yes." Although she later realized that she had revealed her true self and had been rude to us and said that we could wait at the door until 5:30pm, we chose to leave and come back later not to have to look at her face for 10 minutes. Then, when the food was served, although my friend had requested no fried side, half of the plate was filled with fried potatoes! When we asked the girl who brought the food about how the potatoes were prepared and that we didn't want anything fried, she dismissively replied, "This is what you ordered." and left without even waiting to see if we have anything else to say. I'm very sorry for A Cote management for making such poor choices in hiring their staff and failure in training them on how to treat the customers.
Wonderful neighborhood spot! My first visit on the recommendation from a friend. Not disappointed! Wonderful small plates and larger plates to share (or enjoy alone)! Eclectic wine list with some fabulous choices. Allowed our server to guide us through menu and choices were fabulous! Great energy. Excellent service! Would come back again!
Reason I only gave 3 for service was not because the service was slow - quite the opposite. The waiter was very knowledgable and entertaining. However, we seemed to get too much attention and I personally felt pressured into finishing my meal. Too may waiters and busboys milling around while we were trying to hold a conversation, interrupting us all the time.
Its a really good restaurant, great vibe with excellent food. please just let up a little on the service.
This was my second time here, and I must say, our food was a little better on our first visit. I'm not sure if that was just because we ordered better or what.
The french fries are amazing as is the aioli that comes with them (this is a must order!) However, our other items were hit and miss this time. Not horrible, just not amazing. The steak was delicious, as was the pork chop but the squash soup was pretty bad as was the Croque Monsieur sandwich my daughter ordered. We didn't order dessert.
The service was good, and our food came very quickly (even though it was a busy Friday night).
The dish I carefully vetted as gluten-free was not. I was ill the next day and tested my left-overs with the NIMA, which resulted in a GLUTEN FOUND report.
The food tasted good; the service was good, but the representation of the food was not good.
À Côté never fails to impress, even with the simplest of dishes. They make dining an experience for the senses. Let the skilled waitstaff help you choose from the very eclectic wine list and linger over your food. This is not a place where you're rushed out the door. I adore it.
We came to A Cote during 2017 restaurant week and had a top notch delicious dinner with great service, great cocktails, and great wine (one of the best gnocchi dishes of my life). I came back last Friday, the 6th, hoping for a similar experience for my boyfriend's 36th birthday and we both left feeling underwhelmed. I had the Martini Napoletana, which was just ... not good or balanced in any way. Maybe it would've benefited from using olive juice, instead of olive bitters, and a bit more tomato-y tasting tomato water. We RARELY send things back (X is a bartender and we're not picky eaters), but that drink ended up going back to the bar.. I forgot to check if it was charged on our $170 bill. X had the Queen of Thorns cocktail, which he said just reminded him of an unbalanced old fashioned instead of a unique cocktail in its own right -- not TERRIBLE.. The mussels broth was extremely salty, but our server gave us 2 white wines to pair with it that we both enjoyed..Little more butter, garlic, and lemon would've made it just right.. My rigatoni was bland, but well prepared, and while his flat iron steak, greens, and potatoes were very tasty (especially the buttery potatoes), we both found it odd that his meal came served crammed onto such a tiny appetizer-sized plate. The red wines that were brought out to pair with our main dishes were also very good. The host was very nice. Our server was great. She was accommodating, patient, and made good suggestions. At the risk of sounding bratty, I was also sort of hoping that my mentioning X's birthday to the host and to our server (plus the birthday gift bag sitting on the chair next to me) would result in a surprise dessert and candle brought out to our table, but I guess closed mouths don't get fed!
Been there 20+ times over many years Eclectic menu, consistently delicious. We always order the mussels in pernot broth, flank steak, pomme frit, and fish. Suggest you go with friends so you can share all the wonderful dishes. STILL one of the very best restaurants in the Bay Area. Oh, great bar and superb service.
Had a lovely birthday meal. The food was outstanding, but I really have to mention how great the service was! Our server was great at suggesting dishes, and all the staff were extremely helpful and attentive without being intrusive. We will definitely be back!
Everything worked well. We had a reservation and they were ready for us. Had a lovely seat by the window. Waiter very nice and helpful….I asked too many questions but he didn't act at all like he thought so. Food was delicious -- really good. Wanted to try dessert but too full. I'll be back.
Great experience from the start. The host was accommodating to us arriving early for our reservation and welcomed us to have a drink at the bar while we waited. The food and drinks were excellent! Our server's recommendations were perfect, including the wine rec. Definitely recommend sitting on the patio if you can, the ambiance is great. Stand out dishes: chanterelle and corn fritters, and the Coupe A Cote for dessert!
As always, we ordered the mussels and pomme frites right away. And then some other stuff, salads, the gazpacho (excellent!), white bean soup.
The mussels didn't come. They still didn't come. Finally after both tables beside us had consumed their mussels and departed, we inquired.
"Oh, the kitchen is busy tonight." Yeah, right. He just forgot to put in the order. So he got a nice tip because we had a big meal, but he gets ZERO kudos online. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. PS. The Vespolina was nice. Thanks for the suggestion.
A Cote is a hidden gem in the Bay Area dining scene. You don't hear much a out it but it is a very, very good restaurant. The food is first rate. I've never had anything but a great meal there. The mussels are outstanding and so we're the meatballs and the sea bass. The only thing I'd change is that it is incredibly dark in there. Highly recommended!
It was the perfect place, for a perfect date! My husband's birthday! I love the fact that we were seated in a cozy little corner! It was certainly romantic and fun! We shared our food together and we agreed that we will definitely be back! After so many years of being married...we still enjoy our cozy and romantic dinners together! Thank you for making it an even more special night!
We took my nephew and his new wife out to dinner. They live in San Francisco and eat out frequently so I wanted a place that would impress them. A Cote was perfect. The service was lo-key, the food fantastic. We really appreciated how quiet it was on the back patio so we could enjoy talking. We did not feel rushed to clear out. It was a perfect evening and my nephew was impressed.
Have been to A Cote periodically over the years and had always counted on it for decent food, reasonable prices and good atmosphere. Unfortunately I won't be back after the last visit. The food was mediocre and in small portions. I also thought the wine and cocktail listings a bit limited. Sorry to say goodbye to what had been an easy option for dinner in the past.
Enjoyable experience. Very friendly wait staff. Some problem with the kitchen ..?? Service was uneven/slow. Wine list um... eclectic. Featuring wine from Slovenia, etc. Who knew, Slovenian wine? Not me. Anyway, we had fun and food was v. decent. Will def be back
It was a warm night. We wanted to restaurant with good outdoor dining and a cozy ambience; A Cote filled the bill. Our waiter was knowledgeable and in obtrusive. The food was very good. The high points were the muscles and the lobster mushroom flatbread. The only slight initial "miss" was the caprese salad- The tomatoes were tasteless. The wine list is very interesting with offerings you seldom see.
