À Côté is a small-plates restaurant in Oakland's charming Rockridge district. Cozy tables surround large communal tables in both the main dining room and on the sunny patio to create a festive atmosphere. Small plates reflecting the best of seasonal Mediterranean cuisine are served family-style by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Menu items are paired with a carefully chosen selection of over 40 wines by the glass as well as a highly diverse bottled wine menu. Specialty drinks featuring fresh fruits, rare botaniques and fine liqueurs are featured at the bar.
Terrible service. We are regular customers but recently we have never seen the same server there twice. Always someone new who does not even recognize the names of drinks we usually order. Last time we went the service was so slow we ran out of steam by the time the food arrived. We took it home.
Have eaten at a Cote several times and have never been disappointed. The food is always consistently good (the mussels are really yummy!!) and the service is fabulous. Bonus..they have a great bar and make a mean cocktail.
Anniversary dinner. Sat in the back area. Server never friendly... and went down hill from there, she behaved so disinterested it was painful for us. Asked for the heater to be turned on... took three people and 30 minutes. The hostess caught wind of my growing dis satisfaction from one of the other servers who clearly did not want to discuss with our server... clearly something not right as a team, there was tension. We were not difficult. Bottom line... food is good and drinks are solid... without the service and ambiance... why would I dine here again... so many strong and reliable choices... Southie, Wood Tavern, daughter, etc.
Food was absolutely delicious and service was top notch. Only problem was blinding sun shining through the front window. Very unpleasant and the staff person was very apologetic but said there was no screen on that window. Would definitely not sit in that section again but the restaurant needs to purchase a screen!
Wine flights are fun as we know so little about most of the wines on the list. Mussels are a must every time and the shaved veggie salad was outstanding
The food was delicious. We ordered the Duck Liver Mouse, Olives, Steak and Trout. Excellent capaccinos. The music was very loud, and my boyfriend and I had a hard time hearing our own conversation. Service was sporadic, we had a great server, she didn’t frequent our table regularly. Dry spots without any quality attention. Still a great meal for a reasonable cost.
Pros: The food was delicious. We ordered trout, flat iron steak, lamb, mussels and pomme frites for our table of four and shared and consumed everything. The trout was melt-in-your-mouth perfect with a wonderful crusty rub. Mussels were served in a sumptuous buttery broth. The lamb was bit overcooked but tasty and the steak, very good.
Cons:Very dark and noisy inside; noisy on the patio, but with more light. Patio heaters are in the center of the space, so tables on the perimeter can get very chili. Dress in layers! Heavy drapes were closed as the evening progressed, so we warmed up a bit.
The least pricey wine is $48, but the wine list is interesting with many wines from Europe and most offered by the glass. Corkage is $20 but waived if you by one bottle. It would have been nice to take a bottle because one bottle for 4 people was just short of adequate.
We had a great night. The food came out really slow which was a bit annoying .
The only issue is the restaurant is too dark, it could be lighter to read the menu easier
Loved our first visit to A Cote. Recommended to me by a very good foodie friend. We loved the variety of dishes--almost tapas sized which made it easy to share. Loved the pommes frites and the Coq Au Vin. Quiet enough for conversation, but just a bit too dark for my tastes. It was hard to see the food, and even people across the table were in the shadows. We will try to sit closer to the front next time we vist so we can catch some of the outside light.
Food is not as good as it has been in past years. The last two times I've been here, the food has been disappointing. However, our server was very helpful.
This is the first time I’ve posted a review like this, and I’m a loooong-time OT user. I brought my very dear 91-yr old friend to a 5:30pm dinner. (Told my husband I’d be home early). First, we were very pleased to learn that there was no music on the patio, and the heaters made it warm and cozy. We would actually be able to hear one another talk! And the flowers outside were delightful. Second, the staff was phenomenal and very gracious. It turned out that we enjoyed the setting, food, cocktails, and wine so much that 4 hours just flew by; when I looked at my watch, it was 9:30! The restaurant was full, and I’m certain they needed our table, but there was no hint of that and we felt warmly welcomed throughout the meal. And finally, we very much enjoyed wonderful cocktails, excellent wine suggestions, 2 of the 3 small plates, and a large plate of trout. In particular, the duck liver mousse was divine. (The only miss was the little gems salad oddly, since that’s hard to mess up but it was not a good preparation.)
Thank you A Côté- coming from SF, but I’ll be back!!
Hadn't been to A Cote in several years. Was delighted to find that the food, wine and cocktails were still excellent. Looking forward to returning soon.
Went to celebrate a friend's birthday on a Wednesday evening. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to offer great recommendations on drinks and food. She also did a fantastic job of pacing our dishes so we could really enjoy our meal and conversation. Will definitely be back!
We got to sit outside, was lovely. Wines were excellent, mussels and fries, scrumptious! Also had the chicken with mushrooms, potatoes, and asparagus was so good!
Warning for the backroom...VERY loud. Not sure if this was just because a group was sitting there. Also waiter took a while to get to our table but he was polite and great for the rest of the meal. The food was delicious and will definitely try again but ask for the front room instead
Foods are great and service was good. The place is a bit wore out and need update. We were sat at the courtyard and one of the heater is not working. Our server tried to close the canopy but it got stuck . looks like the hedge needs to be fixed
Great place for food and ambiance- love this restaurant. The mussels are always delicious and the wine list of excellent
Generally good food, good service. Although I like the music, at times it's too just loud and hard to hear others. Set a lower volume for the music so it's easy to talk with others. Sometimes the chairs of the tables are too close to other tables' chairs -- check that the chairs are spaced properly to avoid this.
Patio seating was filled with smoke smell from the roof vents, and it seemed to be an issue when we asked to be reseated up front. Food was very good, service was courteous, but not welcoming.
It was all good. Favorite neighborhood French and small plates.
Very welcoming, warm and much like a very special European experience.
Great service (Prompt). Nice food and a great selection of wine.
Delicious food, energetic ambiance. We sat outside but heater wasn't working, and server was a bit strange. Overall enjoyed our experience - will be back!
Great service, good happy hour deal!
Food was good, our service was slow:(
Never disappoints! We loved the Bulgarian menu and the Georgian wines!
Great place for any special occSuon
We had a delicious meal with a great wine flight of Thracian wines. The gnocchi was our favorite! Our server was fun and attentive.
The food is delicious. The ambiance is great. Worthy to go with a family. The prices are honest, not cheap, but fair. I will go back there for sure.
Enjoyed the fine food and service with friends .Mussels and fries!
We had a great dinner paired with a really good Zinfandel. We were seated in the are in the back of the restaurant. It’s very cozy and a great spot fir a date. The service was exceptional!
We have been going here for years. The mussels are our favorite. The wine list is always novel and changing. The waitstaff is fabulous. They are very knowledgeable and attentive.
I love the location but honestly the food was disappointing. Maybe go for wine!
The best mussels I’ve ever eaten and that fried chicken dish was the stuff dreams are made of! Can’t wait to come back again!
First time back at A Cote in over 10 years and it was still great.
Food and wine were outstanding!!
Tables are very close together so not a spot for date like conversations!!
Music was really loud too and we sat right under a speaker.
Hope next time we return for a different seating Option but food was outstanding and ambiance was cool just tooo loud and no personal space.
We will most certainly be back but with different expectations for a date night!!!
A Cote never disappoints... charming French -ish neighborhood bistro. Outstanding cocktail menu and a very unusual wine list. Server was incredibly knowledgeable about wines from Russia and other unique places... we tried a red from Macedonia that was outstanding! The pear salad could have used a little more flavor/dressing, but good size and very fresh. Flatbreads were very good and asparagus soup bright and flavorful! We will be back.
Wonderful date night ambience. Great food and ambience!
Service was very good - food was mediocre- we didn’t drink but our friends loved their cocktails - good place to drink not so great for dinner.
