94th Aero Squadron - San Diego Ratings and Reviews
It was a last minute decision to go to the 94th Aero Squadron. This was for my birthday and we originally planned to go to the Queen Mary Sunday Champagne Brunch, even though the ride is long to get there 2 1/2 hrs. However, traffic alerts prevented going. So then we thought the Hotel Del, didn't care for the price or the menu. We had a bad previous visit to the 94th Aero Squadron (20 years ago, not due to the food) and they had always been off the list of places to go. However, we decided to give it another try. The food was well displayed, and delicious. There was a decent available options to choose from and I had tried just about everything. The Omelet was well made and obviously fresh. The desert options were several, although I would like to see more diversity than different cakes. I tried 2 different cake slices and enjoyed them as did my husband enjoy the carrot cake and lemon meringue pie. Also, we booked the reservation just 2 hours prior to our time and there was no problem when we checked in. When we received the bill, we found out that there was an early bird price, so for 3 people we spent less than for 1 person at the Hotel Del. Definitely would recommend, the food is good, the atmosphere is wonderful. The Maître D, was friendly and genuine. Our server Joshua was readily available and eager to please. Definitely will be going back another time, and encourage local friends to go as well.
It was a great spot for the kick-off dinner for my Susan G. Komen 3-Day Team. The food and drinks were good and the staff was exceptionally accommodating in finding us a table where we were able to talk without interruption by a screaming child. Also, our waiter was great!
We are from Orange County but heard from a friend who had been there once that this was a great place to go, so we made the 2-hour drive to San Diego and it was well worth it. We arrived just as they were opening at 11 so there was no crowd. We enjoyed walking around the grounds, looking at all the WW I memorabilia, planes, etc and taking lots of pictures. We could not believe the reasonable price for a wonderful lunch buffet with a carving station - beef, ham, turkey, as well as DELICIOUS meat lasagna, chicken enchiladas, salads, a wide variety of fruit and dessert. We heard the Sunday buffet is really excellent so we'll definitely go back and will highly recommend it.
Our server Zack was great, food always great, the creamed corn is amazing.
We went on a hot evening and the ac could either not combat it or they did not want to cool the restaurant down. Only thing bad there. Overall one of my favorite restaurants. It is beside a local airport so you can watch small aircraft coming and going, they even have headsets where you can listen to the tower.
The waitress was overwhelmed, plates were left uncleared for a long period of time, champagne was filled at a very slow pace, she mentioned having other tables outside and causing her to be delayed. At the end she made it very ackward when you reviewed the check/bill in front of us. My out of town guests and I got the impression she was reviewing the tip amount. My suggestion get more staff and teach the servers to review the check away from the customers.
I've intended to try 94th Aero Squadron for years and we finally got around to it - what a treasure we've been missing out on! The food and service were wonderful. We started with the calamari which was very nicely prepared. The traditional cocktail sauce was a nice change of pace from what most places are offering. We followed up the appetizer with the coconut shrimp and the petite prime rib - both wonderful, though the creamed corn definitely paired better with the prime rib. We also both tried a soup - me, the French onion (delicious) and my spouse the creamy asparagus (quite good). Our child enjoyed the macaroni and cheese which they kindly agreed to serve with a side of broccoli instead of the regular fries. My spouse took the little one out to explore the grounds while we waited for our food and she loved seeing the planes, ducks, and some toads they found hopping about. Combined with the aeronautical decorations inside and her favorite meal, our daughter was one happy kiddo which definitely makes for a more enjoyable outing for the parents, too.
We had an enjoyable family get-together and they were able to accommodate our group size Some of the dishes were very good and some like my prime rib were tasteless. Service was good but a little spotty. We had to track down the server a couple of times especially for more drinks and water. It's a very good central meeting spot when you have people coming in from various parts of the county.
Lunch buffet overall was pretty good. A variety of food, salad, soup, Lasagne, Chicken enchiladas, Swai, and a carving station which offered prime rib, turkey, and ham. The turkey was moist and tasty, while the beef was a bit dry and overlooked. Desserts varied. The fresh fruit was sweet. The waitress was efficient and friendly.
Chose to come here for brunch after our previous reservation in Pt. Loma fell through. We had been here years before but had forgotten how great this place is! Great value ($26/each for brunch) with bottomless champagne if that's your thing. Carving station, omelette station, crepe station, everything fresh and tasty. Staff very attentive and super nice.
Ambiance is cozy and has kind of a French farmhouse feel to it.
We've been here many times in the past and I don't remember it being this bad. The steaks tasted like they were the cheap meat you find at Vons. They tasted like they cooked them earlier in the day then warmed them up for dinner.
The bathroom was unattended because when I went in someone had a huge problem with #2...it was all over the place...I told the manager and he acted like it was an every day thing...oh, okay we'll take care of it...and acted like it was no big deal.
Unlikely to go back any time soon. Too many other places to try.
This was not our first visit to 94th Aero Squadron and as has been the case in the past, we were not disappointed by the food! The service could have been a bit more efficient, particularly in the way of drink refills and the 1/8 full pitcher of lukewarm au jus served with the prime rib was a bit dismaying. When I asked, I was brought more and this time it was hot. I just felt that was not up to par with the rest of the meal.
Hostess seemed not happy to see us when we arrived for our reservation. I don’t know why. I know that sometimes you’ll be busy or not having a good time at work but please don’t take it to us customers. Our server was great and patient with the kids. The food was a bit bland for our taste. We had better meals in the galley at work and it is hospital food. We still tried to enjoy our time and like what I said, our server was great!
We came for Restaurant Week, the food was great & service was awesome until we had finished our meal & were waiting for dessert. We have been here several times before over the years.
I think the crowd was larger than expected and more wait staff was needed. The steak knives also needed to be sharpened, my dinner knife cut my prime rib better than my steak knife.
We will visit again & hope ratio of wait staff is better.
the restaurant week steaks (asked for medium) were rather tough...the supplied steak knives could not easily slice the meat across the grain (really needed a very sharp chief knife rather then the serrated one supplied).
I believe the steaks were broiled by high overhead heating elements (like Ruth Chris); prefer flame grilled instead.
If I'm wrong, kindly correct my statements; however, I think the top sirloin should have been much much easier to slice & tastier...maybe it's the quality?
The food was at best ok to bland. Service was spotty. Great views of Montgomery Air Field. They set the restaurant to replicate a WWI Squadron air field barracks and restaurant, and that was really the best part. My girlfriend particularly liked the stuffed shrimp and lava cake dessert. We were here for Restaurant Week, so pretty good value, just ok to bland food...probably won't be going back.
Went due to having a pilot friend coming town who wanted to get some steaks. All of the steaks were over cooked. Really cute, venue that puts you back in time. Excellent for any plane enthusiast. Prices were great for happy hour and they seem to have a good brunch menu too.
