Great food and atmosphere. Server was amazing. Exactly the experience we wanted to celebrate our anniversary. Plus learned about happy hour specials so 843 becomes our go-to place.
The restaurant is clearly catered to locals. We were treated differently than the people who go obviously go there every week. One young couple was even asked to get up and move to accommodate a regular couple who came in and wanted their usual table. I had the special, which was crab stuffed salmon and risotto. It was delicious. However, my husband's steak was partially burndt and did not have a lot of flavor. When you're paying $35 for a steak, you expect more. Also, we used a Groupon, and they automatically charged us a 20% tip. Im not sure if they always do that for a party of two, or if it was just because we used a Groupon. But it seemed like they didn't trust us to leave a tip, since we were young and were using a Groupon. We usually tip 25%, but we did not leave anything additional, since the automatic gratuity was so odd to us. We do not recommend this place and would not go back. It's too expensive for the quality and service.
Yearly visitor to HHI AND Living Social had a coupon for a half priced meal. Thought we would take advantage and try something new. Walked in, very nice southern coastal ambience, but canned 60's music did not fit the theme. Male waiter did not impress. Initially brought the wrong drink, and three times brought out crab cake appetizers that we did not order. Third time we kept them, but never got the truffle fries we ordered. We did get charged for the crab cakes that were excellent. Food was pricey, and although good, not worth what we paid for it. Drop your prices by at least a third, and we may return - otherwise Hilton Head has far better dining options for the ambience, price and value.
Absolutely outstanding creative dishes! Appetizers: The roasted beet salad with pecan-encrusted goat cheese was incredible and the truffle fries were addictive. We ordered the pasta bolognese and beef short ribs and they were perfection! Have already recommended 843 to several people.
It's typically a great evening at 843. But this evening nothing really clicked. The meatball appetizer was good, but cheesy enough that our silver was caked with the sauce. The waiter just laid the dirty saucy silver on the lovely white tablecloth. Why not just bring fresh? We had to use a fine linen napkin to scrape the cheese off for the rest of the meal. Yes we ordered braised ribs and curry which can sometimes be overly sauced and these were but no nuance in the flavor. Cooked well but sloppy to eat. Waiter was bowled over with too many tables and insinuated they were also bartending and doing some cooking as well so service was just ok for a nice restaurant. An average and less impressive evening compared to previous trips to 843.
Farro and barley root vegetable salad was incredible. Seared scallops delicious.
My husband and I had dinner at 843 for the first time tonight on the recommendation of a friend who lives on HHI. What a lovely spot this is! It's small, intimate and cozy, relaxed with great background music that doesn't interfere with conversation, and the food was fabulous!
With a nice wine list, a full bar (I had a great martini!), and great choices in appetizers, the entrees are nicely varied as well. I had the scallops which pretty much melted in my mouth, and hubby had the Moroccan brick chicken, which he loved.
Our server was well informed and extremely pleasant, attentive and friendly but not intrusive.
With no room for dessert we left full, happy, and delighted to have found another "must do" for our trips to the island.
Definitely make reservations because it is small, and I'd recommend for any kind of occasion or just an extremely pleasant evening out with spouse or friends. I think, because of the menu though, that I'd probably not take a large group with small children there as it's fairly pricey (but definitely worth it!!)
and probably not the best choice for little ones.
Excellent service, wonderful & creative food without being weird. Quiet atmosphere where you can actually have a conversation without shouting. It's one of our favorites
Very dissapointed, looks like they're after make More money
My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at 843 this week. The food was excellent and very large portions. Service was outstanding. Will come back!
Great food Average service Did not appreciate tip being automatically being included in our bill
Outstanding restaurant! When you are in the 843 area code area, 843 is a must! EXCELLENT FOOD + EXCELLENT SERVICE = EXCELLENT RESTAURANT!
Very limited menu
Took too long for salads. Entree came before half way thru salad
A bit pricey. $36.00 scallops
Food was good
We tried this restaurant on our recent beach trip. The scallop entree was superbly prepared with perfect sear and moist inside. Our salads were fresh and delicious. Our waiter was inattentive and failed to fill our water glasses.
We had a great meal
Flatbread was incredible
The menu has been greatly improved
There were so many things we wanted to tried
The food and ambiance excellent! Food is farm to table fresh, had the Moroccan chicken, delicious! And beet salad, sooo good! I love that is is quiet, small place where you can enjoy conversations, sit outside, highly recommend
The food was good. My curry had a nice balance of heat and coconut creamy sweetness. Perfect.
Service was not good. Our server was earnest, but was poorly trained and in over his head. He did not know wine, and interrupted my guests several times to join the conversation. He thought you can saute Lemoncello. About the wine -- he brought the wrong wine three times and did not know how to open a bottle. If I had not been paying full price, it might have been comical. Finally, a note for the bar. It is not ok to top off a martini, served up, with Sprite. And bitters: one or two dashes, not a tablespoon. It was embarrassing.
The kitchen truly has great skill. It's a wondrous menu. Let's get the bar and the service up to at least a C. I want to love this restaurant again.
Food was very good. Small menu but still tasty.
After a thunderstorm ruined our outdoor dinner plans, I was relieved to see 843 had a prime time (6:45) opening. Unfortunately, our dining experience left much to be desired. While the food was decent, the service and experience were some of the worst I've had on Hilton Head. Our server took 10 minutes to greet us and offer us water. When I asked questions about the menu (due to food allergies), he blew my requests off and tried to tell me there was "probably only one dish I could order and I should just get it." When I asked him if he wouldn't mind double-checking with the chef about an item, he blatantly said no. We then spent the majority of our time being ignored by our server as he hurriedly rushed past us 5 times and didn't bother to check how we were doing, refill water glasses or apologize for the delay on our food (which took nearly an hour to be delivered.) We weren't asked how our meal was after it arrived and were never offered a dessert menu. The owner happened to be on the restaurant that night; unfortunately, while she offered an apology for the poor service, nothing was done to make amends and we still weren't offered a dessert menu or our check (we had to flag down another server to get it). Needless to say, we will not be returning to 843. I understand everyone has "off" nights, but to see other tables being waited on attentively and promptly AND having nothing done when our poor service was brought to the attention of management isn't the way to keep customers coming back.
We learned upon arriving that it was Taco Tuesday- and we thought the salmon tacos were good, but the Brussels didn't do it for us. Margarita was adequate, but nothing to rave about. Kale salad with blackened shrimp and flatbread with shrimp were both good, but again, not terribly memorable. Service was good and fast. We skipped $9 dessert and went to Duck Donuts instead!
Great menu, great setting, wonderful wine list & original bar mixology too. 5 in our party, each with different choices. Every plate was a superb taste bud symphony. Staff is very friendly, happy and balanced quick service without the pressure to choose. 843 is new to HHI and captures the HHI flavors in one place. Great discovery on our part, will absolutely come back next year ... and the next ... and so on.
This spot is consistently rewarding. The wine selections are superb. The dining room is cozy and quiet. Expect to find nicely conceived and well-presented entrees. Our salmon with crab topping and roasted, curry flavored chicken were wonderful.
Fabulous Hilton Head location with quiet and quaint ambience. The food was superb. Fresh Hawaiian Poke to start with the grain salad was plenty of food for me. Our table also ordered the Caesar salad, Bolognese, muscles, and stuffed meatballs. All of the food was delicious.
The service is a tad slow. The atmosphere reminds me of an old southern Home inviting you in for a cup of tea - a Place you sit and visit a while.
Good food and service but pricey , over $100 for salad and entree for two. No drinks.
We look forward to dining st 843 whenever we vacation in Hikton Head. The chef turns out creative cuisine that is as pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. The taki tuna and avocado appetizer, the Moroccan brick chicken, and the alcohol-infused ice cream were were the highlights of our recent dining experience but all four in our party were pleased with their selections. 834 is the perfect choice for good food at great value for your money. Half price wine on Wednesdays is an added bonus.
The restaurant is quaint and lovely. We tried the mussels. They were delicious and instead of bread with the mussels it was served with fries. Great touch! The scallops were the best I've ever had. The curry was quite good. The strawberry tiramisu was more like a strawberry shortcake. It was shareable and excellent
Had a great meal. Very friendly service, not too intrusive. Menu is fantastic, lots of great options and that is before you hear the specials! We went with the curry and the salmon special...delicious!
We enjoyed 843 when visiting Hilton Head two years ago and enjoyed it every bit as much this time around. Attentive server, wonderful food, and lovely patio made for a perfect dining experience. The homemade moonshine infused salted caramel ice cream was an outstanding way to complete the meal.
A must visit while on HHI. Awesome food, good price and good service.
Although our meal was tasty, we found the menu selections pricey. When you have shrimp in a nice restaurant & it's in a sauce, we would much prefer that it be peeled so that the sauce ends up on the shrimp instead of on the diners.
Probably will not return for dinner. Maybe for lunch or happy hour instead.
A small intimate dining room that is very pleasent until a large group shows up. They are seated in the middle of the room and from that point you feel as though they are at your table. The place then becomes claustrophobic.
The menu is relatively small but everything we ordered was wonderful. If you are a short rib fan, theirs are fabulous. PS: A very modest domestic beer selection is the only negative we experienced regarding their offerings.
We've been before and have enjoyed 843. This time, not so much. They seemed short on help and the food was not as good. The filet mignon was over-cooked and not worth the charge.
Poor Quality of food
very disappointed to celebrate birthday at this place.
Nice atmosphere, delicious fresh food. Service was great! Highly recommend!
Nice small intimate place with a library like decor. Prawns were excellent as were the garlic truffle fries. I believe we had a new waitress who was polite and funny but did not have here professional sea legs under her yet. I never received the cocktail I ordered and she was not versed on my wife's gluten free requests. The owner compensated for the knowledge and the chef was excellent.
Very nice place! Great friendly service. We had drinks and appetizers first and then dinner and enjoyed it all.
Friends recommended 843 for Sunday brunch and we tried it for dinner. We found the dining area attractive and comfortable if a bit small and the staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. We split a large spinach salad which was excellent. However we both thought our main dishes were good but not memorable, especially for the price. We will return for the brunch.
This cozy restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere, as well as a fine dining experience. Each member of the restaurant staff with whom we interacted made us feel sincerely welcome.
We selected the flatbread appetizer and found it to be an excellent beginning to our meal. The local shrimp on the flatbread were very fresh and perfectly cooked. My husband chose the scallops and found this dish to be creatively prepared, as well as excellent. I chose the filet mignon. I rarely order filet at a restaurant, as we purchase excellent beef from a market near our home, and cook them on the Big Green Egg. However, I was in the mood for a filet and was not disappointed! It was perfection!
We rounded out our meal with a flight of liqueur-infused ice cream and limoncello cake - both excellent choices.
The wine list offers a very fine selection of wines at affordable prices.
Two thumbs up and a high recommendation for 843!
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at 843!! Took advantage of the Sunday wine special-any bottle under $100 is half off. Tried and liked a cab we'd never seen before. Two diners had the short ribs, so good, husband had the bolognese which he liked very much and I went with the curry noodles-delish!! Charming spot, casual comfy decor/seating. Would like to try all the salads, interesting mix of fresh items. Looking forward to a return visit when we are in the area again.
Ok, I have been coming to HHI for 40+ years and enjoy all the old favorites. However, this old salty dog has a new place to add.
We had a 9:15PM reservation to "close-down" the restaurant that evening. Our service was very good and we didn't feel rushed . (They were finishing up a table of 25 when we came in - HHI in the summer!)
Food - 843 has the best crab cakes on the island - if you appreciate crab more than stuffing to fill you up! My friend had the Caesar and was pleasantly surprised by addition of the penne pasta and tomatoes. (However, all were listed on the menu and added great taste and texture.) The main courses seem limited, but we had eaten out 5 of last 7 nights. So, enough options for most. I went with the bolognese - very nice mix of beef, veal, and pork. I am from the SW and added a few red pepper flakes for more kick but otherwise very good. The combination of meats Was wonderful and had enough for lunch next day. My friend had the filet, which was cooked and seasoned to perfection.
We will be back!
