827Ray's Kitchen + Cellar
The food was the only somewhat good aspect of this visit. The restaurant looks amazing from the outside but once you are inside, it’s a cold empty space with atrocious decor. Server acted as if we were bothering her from the start and kept saying how busy she was. Our bill was close to $300 for a family of 6. Not the service or atmosphere we expect from choosing to dine at an expensive steak/seafood restaurant. I wanted to leave before we ordered. Disappointing.
We came here to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary because we've always had a wonderful experience and the food is consistently good. However, I made the mistake of ordering the Chef's Seafood Bouillabaisse which was a huge disappointment. The broth was thick and there were lots of potatoes in it. Not sure I've had this dish with potatoes ever! My husband ordered their Pork Osso Bucco which is always incredible. Yes, we recommend 827 Ray's but suggest you not order the Bouillabaisse.
Our server was attentive and knowledgeable as well.
For the cost not at all what we expected. The server didn’t know the menu very well. My food was salty and both my friend’s steaks were undercooked. Did I mention no one was there cause of an impending storm - so just us to cook for & couldn’t get it right. Not impressed at all - we wanted a fancy dinner for girls night - should’ve gone elsewhere.
Josh was Fantastic!
Food was outstanding, especially the swordfish. Wine was a GREAT value!
Walking in, the decor almost made us turn around and leave. There is nothing high-end or edgy or cool about the decor. It is VERY dated with really terrible artwork on the walls... the place needs a serious overhaul...
So we decided to sit at the bar since it was our anniversary...
The food was delicious but a few problems... we had a very interesting calamari appetizer but the breading fell off of the calamari before we could even get a bite... For the entree, I ordered a $32 filet mignon medium-rare and it came medium to medium-well... So, they had to re-cook it and it arrived long after my wife had finished her entree.... I would hope a steakhouse would get the temps right.
On the upside was the bartender... she was amazing - made a fabulous martini and really had everything together. She made the experience a 4 star - otherwise, we would go with 2.5
The manager said that they would be renovating soon, but he also said that they were going to carpet the whole place... there are decent floors already... so, while I might try it again, I am really hoping that they spend the money to work with a real established restaurant interior designer and don't think they can do the renovation themselves.... I would def not start with carpet....
No, I will not recommend Rays to anyone. 3 pieces of asparagus!! Really? Way too much Hollandaise sauce. It covered the entire plate. The orange chicken was ok. And the price was too much for what we got. No, we will not be back.
Fresh, fresh, fresh! Outstanding service, really fresh food and very well prepared. Good tunes and a very nice finish out. Great bartender fixes special request martini for my wife and it was spoy on. Oyster Rock with fresh spinach were amazing. Do not miss this place while in Austin!
Ordered a medium rare steak and was served medium. Steak was very tough. Was served brussel sprouts instead of spinach that o had ordered. Had made note in reservations that it was birthday celebration and no mention made of it. Husband ordered jumbo lump crab dinner....rather skimpy for the price. Chose cherry cobbler for dessert which had a miinimal number of cherries. Doubt we will return....very disappointed.
Really good, quality seafood!
As usual dinner was wonderful. Chuck may be the best waiter in town. Food was great! Wine list losing a little steam and didn't have the first bottle we ordered, but we found a good second pick.
Really enjoyed 8271 Ray's.The filets we had were awesome and the service was excellent. Can't wait to go back and enjoy again.
First, I want to clarify that we went to Texas Street Grill for Crawfish. The boil itself was well flavored and seasoned and had a nice kick to it. However, crawfish was an issue - first 2 orders were cooked perfectly. The 3rd order was way overcooked where the crawfish was nothing but mush. So we sent it back and got a replacement order...which was way undercooked. The chef should know that when the crawfish is cooked, the shell turns red. The last batch we got, the shells were grey and crawfish inside were slimy... We love crawfish and have been eating them for 30 years... It's a shame since most places get the boil wrong but get the cook right. I think with practice, they will get the cook of the crawfish right. We will try again and keep our fingers crossed.
Enjoyed it, sat in the area near the bar, which had a great feel. The dining area was relatively vacant; I think something should be done to add some character or pizzazz to the dining area. Otherwise, really enjoyed it.
It wasn’t the worst meal I’ve ever had, but won’t be back. Everything was average to below average. I’ll leave it at that.
Wonderful food! Lobster Thermador was amazing! Great service and atmosphere.
Took family from California to lunch here. Enjoyed sandwich, salads, crab cake and flatbread items.
It was my husbands birthday.
Thank he food was wonderful.
The service was marginal.
It wasn’t bad... but it certainly wasn’t stellar.
The atmosphere was great.
I will go back but hope for more attentive service.
Valentine's Day disaster:
Our table was not ready as reserved ( host/manager complained about Open Table over booking them, 75% occupancy. Sure, complain about anything that sends you business?!?)
Entertained with MMA fighting on the big screen at the bar.
If you are a person that has even a "slight" discerning palate... do yourself a favor and give this place another 5 years to get a new chef, take some hospitality classes, get educated on what the dining experience is all about... or just go out of business. I could go into detail about the food but simply, a Texas Double Wopper from Burger King would had been more enjoyable...Ranked least of all my Culinary/Restaurant management & dinning experiences.
It's one thing to open a restaurant because it's your passion and desire to provide a memorable experience...and then there's another to just open a restaurant. This restaurant has a good name... but no passion.
Our four corse dinner on Valentine’s Day was incredible. The house was full but each course appeared to be prepared with the concern of a serous chef. The tenderloin fillet could be cut with a butter knife and was seasoned perfectly. The wine selection was quite nice as well.
Had a reservation at 7:30 but was told it was on the outdoor patio which was not an option when I booked. Asked if we could get the next available table inside and the host said sure but next time don’t use Open table just call. Waited at the bar and the host forgot about us and after 35 min I reminded him we were waiting and he was very apologetic and seated us within a few minutes. Waited 25 min for someone to come by our table; no one showed up to ask about drinks....nothing. So after over an hour invested got up and left. Great Valentine’s Day 827 Ray’s.
This was my 4th time at Ray's. I picked it for Valentine's Day based on previous experience. We were given choices of where to sit. Ray's was busy, so after waiting longer than I'd like, I went to the bar and got our drinks. Server was apologetic and the service was good after that 1 glitch. My date asked for medium well filet and it was more raw than she liked. It went back, but never seemed to get more than raw in the middle. We were comped for half the cost of the steak.
Over all, I will return to Ray's.
We visited 827Ray's Kitchen for our Valentines day dinner and brought some out of town friends with us. We all had an outstanding meal with great service and our friends were impressed. For us it is the same high quality and food and service we always receive at 827Ray's. What a great place.
Didn't realize there was a set menu for Valentines but the food was good. Wine pairing were also very nice. Will need to go back and really evaluate the place but it was definitely a good enough experience to want to go back to.
Awesome place to go and have a nice quiet, quality meal. Oysters were fresh and from the east coast, cocktail sauce was excellent as well. We had a NY Strip and a Filet that were cooked to perfection. Also had the lobster Mac and cheese as a side, def worth it! Wesley took care of us and will definitely be back!
drive from Austin around once a month we enjoy so much. One of the best Osso Bucco I have had.
The dining room lacked ambience. Everyone seemed to be seated in the same section, so noise level was rather high. Ordered filet medium well and it came out basically burned. While the flavor was still good, tough to eat. Our waiter understood and made it right. The sides were very flavorful as well as the apple turnover with a hint of vanilla ice cream.
This is my 4th visit to Rays. The food is consistently good but my favourite soup isn’t on the menu anymore. Our party of 3 all had salads and all 3 liked them. Our waiter wasn’t attentive. He never asked if we wanted a drink, Soda? Wine? Coffee?
It just wasn’t really what I expect for a mid/high range lunch. Better service and I’ll go back but we have too many great restaurants here to settle for just ok
We arrived Sunday evening and were promptly told that, since the menu was turning over on Monday, several items were not available. Instead of the redfish I wanted, I was encouraged by our server to order a filet. It was undersized and medium well - I had ordered medium rare. After sending it back, the replacement was no better, well done by the time I could eat it. Our server, Wesley, was very good and friendly but he was defeated by the kitchen. Our friends ordered salmon that was coated with hollandaise sauce that had congealed to crusty. Whereas tables and the bar are very pretty wood and copper, they don't make up for a questionable kitchen.
What a friendly welcome! The restaurant is lovely and very clean, without smelling like disinfectant. The food was tasty. There were plenty of tempting choices on the menu. My gluten free meal was truly gluten free. We were able to hear one another while talking in quiet voices. We had a productive business meeting over lunch and are looking forward to returning soon.
We ordered our appetizer and drinks. The waiter never took our dinner order! The manager asked if we had ordered. We said no- he never took our order or sent the waiter over. We had to flag the waiter over. Three groups that came in after us ate and left before our dinner came out. Our dinners were almost cold - probably ready for some time sitting under a lamp. We had to ask for a veggie to be reheated- they did bring us new/fresh. After we finished and paid ( no delay in getting our bill to us) we told the waiter about our experience. He was patient and listened but of course had an excuse they were short staffed. Just poor attention to details and customers. Could be a really good place but that happens enough to too many and the doors will close. Too many other good places to eat.
I was disappointed in how loud the noise level was. I talked to the manager on the way out and he assured me they were taking steps to cut down on the noise. Food is always good! Oysters are great!
Good fun. Food was pretty good. The steak was awesome! I recommend that. Drinks were not too great. I would stay simple with it. Great dinner!
We realize that New Years eve was very busy. Our filet and fish were both over cooked. We find that your wine pairing left something to be desired. Our server said that the wine pairing was complementary, it was NOT. But, we will be back, but never on a holiday.
Horrible experience. We were seated two hours later than our scheduled reservation time. The service was horrible. It took an hour for our appetizers to come out. The drinks Irving was horrible as well. Serving one ounce of wine in a glass and telling us that it's going to take forever to bring more wine is not acceptable. The manager did work with us and tried to apologize for the situation but that does not give them any excuse to provide horrible service especially when we pay so much money for a nice evening. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. And all of this happened on December 31st 2018. Our waiter told us that Christmas Eve was booked and the service was worse than what it was the night of December 31st. I will definitely not be going back to this restaurant.
staff seemed overwhelmed by the New Years Eve crowd. This is our second visit and the food on our first visit was tremendous. Ordered the panko crusted oysters and they arrived looking like the entire box on Panko was covering them, couldn't taste the oysters at all, the other appetizer was the shrimp and gnocchi and it tasty and well prepared. When it came time for the salad course we were asked if we were ready for it and we indicated we were, but it took over 10 mins to get the salads- back to the staff seeming to be overwhelmed by the turnout. On this visit, we ordered grouper and it was a bit dry, the other entree was pan-seared lemon chicken and it was superb.
Unfortunately, we were seated in the dining room that contained the bar and there was a young lady providing musical entertainment and she was very good but the small room made it impossible to hold a conversation.
We had reservations at 7:30 for the 3 course meal and at the restaurants request we moved it to 8 and was assured we would be served the same 3-course prix fixe meal and ending up being served and billed for the 5 course - didn't fight it - just wanted to get out and find some peace and quiet
The server was great. The spinach & bacon side dish and the asparagus were way too salty.
My husband and I both ordered the halibut, which was fantastic. Our guests had the Grouper and Filet Mignon, and they both really enjoyed their choices. The service was great and we all enjoyed ourselves.
Birthday dinner, everything was great , our favorite place in this area
We chose this restaurant for Christmas Eve dinner because we had dined here before and enjoyed it. Bad choice. We ordered appetizers first and since they were a long time arriving our server asked if we wanted to place our main course order while we waited and we did. We were only half way through the appetizers when dinner arrived. The table was too small to place the dinner plates and hang on to our appetizers so we handed those over. Our main courses were not up to par, just okay. We sat with our dirty dishes on the table for a long time before the manager stopped by and we asked if he could clear the table. Our server saw this and came over to finish clearing. He didn’t even ask if we’d like dessert, which we didn’t want by now so we asked for our check. It was a long time coming. We couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Oh, and did I mention the tables were not dressed — no table cloth or place mats. This place has definitely gone down hill and we won’t be returning.
