Outstanding service, food, live jazz music and ambiance. It feels comfortable and timeless inside; very nice that it's NOT brand new and 'cookie cutter' like all the fresh buildings that surround the area. Had a Wonderful experience and we'll return again soon! Lived in this city for 50 yrs and always wanted to go, now I wish I'd have gone 20 yrs ago and had a dedicated seat. Cheers & Enjoy
John the manager was amazing - flaming our steak Diane's and telling us the story behind our meal, he always makes it so much fun - James our waiter is very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested each couple share an appetizer(wild mushroom bread pudding) or salad (seafood salad) - it was a delightful evening - Love having the Groupons
My husband and I arrived on Saturday night, anticipating another delicious meal at Wilf's. Unfortunately, there was a loud jazz band playing and we couldn't (keep in mind we're in our 70's) hear anything else. We tried to move away from the music, but it was still too loud and we decided to leave. The wait staff was very gracious and even offered to make reservations for us elsewhere. Apparently, this band plays on a particular schedule. We will be careful to check out the schedule before reserving again. SO disappointed to miss out on Steak Diane!
Good Food, Service and Excellent Jazz Music. Only fault is that it did not appear that the menu reflected the same pricing as the ending receipt.
Marvelous AGAIN! John and the ladies are wonderful as is the RARE flambe foods!
Great food! Great service! Great entertainment!
Wonderful dinner...again! Wilfs is the last remaining "supper club" environment in Portland and is a classic dining experience...complete with live Jazz. Fabulous.
This place could be so much better. It is in such a cool spot and they have great music. The furniture and general decor is very old and worn. The mushroom bread pudding was amazing - I would like to give another try just for that - maybe. The hamburger really underwhelming though, and too expensive for so generic. The meat had no flavor, there was no special sauce and just lettuce, tomato, onion, for $15? Get creative, please. The gin martini was good, but how can you mess that up. The bartender was fantastic with a great personality.
Food is way overpriced for rather basic stuff. Got a very small cut of seabass, plain rice and a few asparagus rods for 42$.
The wait staff are obnoxious but the manager is fun and attentive!
Great first impression. Really professional knowledgeable maitre'de/manager....he happily extended a warm welcome and was there if we needed anything. 3 of us had Steak Diane flambe cooked table side and one person had a 7 oz filet mignon. Our waiter was attentive. The food was VERY VERY good. We all enjoyed our meals and experience. Nothing to complain about. If you are going out for a nice meal, it is a little pricey, but for special occasions I highly recommend it.
Ridiculous prices for ordinary food. Good service. Great music and atmosphere.
Our entire dining experience was outstanding, from the hostess taking our jackets, to being seated, to being greeted by the maitre d who prepared tableside our fabulous Steak Diane with a history lesson on its origination, to the awesome jazz musicians. Very private and very comfortable. Fabulous dining experience and ambiance setting in a beautiful historic building.
Very busy Saturday and extremely short staffed. Service is friendly enough but very slow due to staff issue. My $32 Prawns came with 5 pieces large shrimp at best, although cooked alongside the table which makes it “fancy”. The large shrimp are likely farm raised, not wild caught as the restaurant advertised all their food are organic, sustainable and locally sourced. You can taste the difference. We will not return, coupon or not.
Didn't meet expectations - service was slow and food was just okay. Prices are higher than advertised.
Quiet, classic Portland restaurant with right-sized menu. Great for shortish occasion or evening of jazz and cocktails. A family favorite for 40 years.
Amazing food with excellent presentation. Yummy.
Surrounding area is a bit rough but manageable.
We absolutely love this restaurant! The cuisine, ambiance and attention to detail are superb; they've got a wonderful selection of wines that can be purchased by the glass to pair nicely with each course. The live jazz is always a pleasure that adds to the experience! From start to finish; they consistently make us feel special...we look forward to our next visit to Wilf's!
We went to listen to jazz and enjoy happy hour. Unfortunately, happy hour has been discontinued. The cover charge of $10 per person is very reasonable considering the level of entertainment provided by Ron Steen and crew. We paid $68 for one beer, one glass of bubbly, two salads and a "nibbles plate". That seems a bit high. Also, each food item on our bill cost a couple of dollars more than the price listed on the menu. That is ridiculous. As stated previously, we were disappointed to miss out on happy hour, which is always an economical way to eat! Wilf's needs to either improve the food or lower the prices and hire ALL wait staff who are genuinely friendly and happy to see customers. Some of the wait staff's behavior is very off-putting.
43 years of business! Service was impeccable! This is definitely a special occasion place.
This place is an upscale place, very friendly and professional atmothfear. Food was ok, a little bit spicy and too much sauce on prime-rib. Diana steak was fairly delicious. Place is quite expensive, I would say a little bit overpriced.
Wilf’s is a lovely old Portland restaurant with excellent service and very good food and ambiance. Capable tableside presentations of classic items such as Cesar Salad and Steak Diane help to make it a great special occasion venue. Several nights a week the bar provides not only a good bar menu but live music, usually jazz. Wilf’s is located in the historic Portland Union Station, so the tables in the far back of the restaurant by the small trackside windows allow guests so interested the option of seeing Amtrak and freight trains go by. The restaurant is, however, very quiet and the rail activity outside does not disturb the dining experience at all.
The food was excellent as was the service - Caesar salad prepared tableside, steak Dianne prepared tableside, and delicious martinis.
I had a great time on my date at Wilf's. The waitress was so nice and explained the menu very well. Patient, engaging, and I will definitely be returning.
Amazing time at Wilfs! First time ever going to Wilfs for a date night and a friend was playing bass with some other great musicians. What a wonderful night filled with some of the most fun we have ever had at a restaurant with live music! Great atmosphere, Great food and Great food! We reserved a table close to the music to support or friend and just enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you Wilfs for creating such a special experience!
My friends and I went out in search of an upscale jazz restaurant, and Wilfs fit perfectly
unexpected 20% gratuity charge. Great salad ! Ribs were tough, Sea Bass was to fishy.
Maitre D John always gives such a warm welcome and makes everyone feel special. He also provides great stories and humor to the stories he tells as he provides the special tableside service for Caesar salad, steak Diane, or bananas foster. Douglas is an attentive and knowledgeable food server who provides the perfect amount of attention.
This fabulous restaurant continues to be a favorite of ours as the food is always delicious and the service is wonderful. We also enjoy the live jazz music. This venue does Portland proud!
I always enjoy eating at Wilfs. The atmosphere is both elegant and relaxed. Serving staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Food is delicious and varied. If you enjoy jazz, come for dinner on a night with live music. It will be perfect.
We had enjoyed Wilf's in the past, but this will probably be the last time we go. The waiter took our drinks order, and brought them about 15 minutes later. We ordered our food and a very easy appetizer. We didn't see him again until I asked if we could at least have some bread. He came back with the "nibble plate" and bread, and we didn't get our meal until we'd been sitting there for an hour and 40 minutes!
Too much emphasis on the tableside production number dishes. I thought I was on a cruise!
We've been before and always had an awesome time with John as our server, but the female servers tonight were super gruff, not attentive, and very offputting. Having been before we stuck it out, but the people next to us were here for the first time and we're talking about leaving because of the inattentiveness of our same server and how long it was taking to get any service let alone their entrees. I know it was VDay night and busy, but the servers could have faked some enthusiasm and warmth ... especially for $100+/person. Food was good, service was horrible, but we'll try one more time and hope tonight was just an off night.
The service was excellent and they provide a great space for musicians and the music was very good/Paula Byrne Quintet. The overall experience was fun and pleasant, but they are way overpriced. The menu choices were limited due to the special occastion/VAlentine's Day without any previous mention of this when I booked reservations and nothing was posted on their website referring to this limited menu. I would recommend them to a friend based on their excellent service, but I would recommend them only for a special occasion maybe once or twice a year and I would warn my friends to ask about the menu.
RUDE! We had a reservation for 5:15 and arrived on time. As we were seated, we were told we needed to be done by 6:30. That’s a big zing and makes you feel rushed. My husband and I ALWAYS share a meal as it’s always plenty. On the menu it stated there were NO shared meals. So, what we assumed would be a lovely $75 meal for the two of us cost us $160 and we took 1/2 of each of our meals home. We were very sorry we didn’t leave after being told we had to be done by 6:30.
We left about 6:23 and the restaurant was no more than 1/2 filled, it that so did not understand the requirement that we vacate the table by 6:30.
The staff and food were fantastic. We really enjoyed ourselves and will be back. Wish I had known about it sooner.
My wife and I came here and loved every minute of it. As soon as you walk in you are greeted and welcomed. The waiter was very skilled in dining etiquette and making sure everything was perfect not only for the food but for the experience. The band was tasteful and talented as it filled the room with comforting jazz. Perfect for a date night if you just want to be close to your significant other and able to talk and have a good time. In my opinion the food should be priced higher, the ingredients all together make a wonderful assortment of flavors that do not disappoint. I would highly recommend this to anyone for multiple different occasions.
Very cozy room in a beautiful historic train station. Great music, though at times it was somewhat impacted by distracting noise from the bar (and a loudmouth bar patron) right next to the music area. Food was very good but a bit overpriced. Parking and feeling safe in the neighborhood at night can be somewhat challenging but not impossible, just put on your city attitude and plan enough time to find parking (and find your way there through all the bus zones and one-way streets).
Got a Groupon for this place and didn’t realize what and upscale place it was. The food was exceptional, especially the prime rib, which easily the best I’ve had. Piano music on our night, so not quiet. The waiter provided good service but seemed overworked in the amount of time he had to check in. Very spendy, spent $125 on 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 5 beers, and that may have been the total after the $50 Groupon. Good special occasional spot unless you are rich.
We came in for a birthday celebration and the service was amazing! The matredee was super friendly, funny, and knew a lot about the history of the restaurant and food. The food was delicious and when my child didn't care for what she ordered, the waiter got her a new meal without a second question. We had never been to Wilf's before and we will definitely be back again!
As always, the service is what makes Wilfs stand out above all else. The food was perfection, melting steak Diane, Devine Bananas Foster and a wonderful ambiance in a historic building.
Thank you
Excellent evening. Matre 'd John was wonderful and enjoyable to visit with. James was a great waiter and very attentive to whatever we needed. We were looking forward to the live music, but apparently they cancelled that afternoon. Food was absolutely excellent! We will be back!
We have been going to Wilfs for 10 years at least once a month . The service is perfect, the food always delicious and the atmosphere, charming and elegant and comfortable all at the same time. And the musical talent they showcase in the bar several nights a week is terrific too: particularly the Tony Pacini Trio last Friday of the month.
