Service was excellent, it was in a semi bad part of town. My steak was extremely chewy, the decor was very outdated and somewhat dusty.
Went to WILFs for Portland dining. Due to virus, it was empty. John the maitre' d/waiter/pastry chef was outstanding. Had time to discuss the history, location, food prep etc. We had a Portland Sour drink that was refreshing unique.
WILFs is expensive so would be a special occasion visit not a routine repeat place to dine
I would recommend to a friend that wanted to listen to music and have a drink only. We came for dining month and they were out of the second course and the steak was inedible. Our server was great and made the experience better than it could have been.
Everything was excellent but the mashed potatoes were quite bland. Nothing really burst of flavor in our party of 4 meals but all was presented beautifully.
The staff was amazing and were prompt with their service. The environment was great for a romantic dinner and short getaway.
The dinner was perfect for my partner and I.
I’m happy to have found this through Portland Dining’s Month. I would come back and highly recommend!
Too bad the location is surrounded by homeless tents. The staff was super nice but the food quality lacked. Thankfully we had the March dining menu because there’s no way I would have paid the prices they were asking on their menu for the quality of food. I guess Groupon has turned this formerly nice steak house into something less desired. Good live music though. Steer clear of Thursday’s unless you like to have the ENTIRE restaurant to yourself.
French onion soup was really good. But the steak was so so and the seafood stew was mediocre.
Amazing place for a special occasion. We went last minute to listen to some music. We wish we had planned better because we were only able to stay an hour and 30 minutes.
I love these kinds of classic dining options with tableside finishing of classic meals. This one had the added bonus of a live jazz performance. It was me and a couple of buddies traveling together to celebrate my birthday, and we were all happy with our meal choices. I had the French onion soup and the spiced pork which was so moist and well presented. The other guys had the Steak Diane with the accompanying preparation "ceremony". Neither of those guys had seen that before and they were both still talking about it for the rest of the night. The staff all clearly love working there, and we all had a great time. Thank you!
Music was fantastic and the right noise level. The crab Louis salad was amazing!! The seats were comfortable and waiters were cordial. Bathrooms are in dire need of a remodel. The fruit crisp was so tart even with ice cream, we didn’t finish it, this should be removed from the menu. Overall, it was lovely but much too high priced compared to other fine dining in Portland.
We had a very early reservation (5:30pm) for dinner to avoid crowds. Wilfs was not busy at all and we were immediately seated. My husband wanted 2 appetizers and I wanted a "Prime Filet Steak" dinner. I asked the waiter specifically if this was a prime filet mignon steak and he replied "Yes". When the food came my husbands large prawn cocktail was an entree of shrimp and pasta! My steak dinner looked like some kind of salisbury steak and was in no manner a filet of any type of beef! I asked the waiter to remove it and I took my husband's mistaken order and ate the shrimp pasta - it was very good. Then we re-ordered the large prawn cocktail, which my husband did enjoy. Seems this service was poor, especially for the prices at Wilfs. Probably won't return.
We had an incredible experience. Everyone that worked there took great care of us! My husband and daughter had a father/daughter dance to the live music. So sweet!
John shared wise words of wisdom about love with our daughter, who is in college, and made us all feel at home.
We will definitely be back!!
What an iconic restaurant - that can often become staid and tired, but not in this case. We made a late reservation for Valentines' Day and chose the 5:30 pm seating rather than beginning at 8:30 pm. While the live music didn't start until 7 pm, we had no problems with that. The staff who has been there for a long time, we're so professional and charming. They really made us feel welcome. I chose the Steak Diane and though med-rare, it will a little chewy. My husband's choice was the filet; same issue. But it was fine and the evening, ambiance and service more than made up for the meat as being less than perfect. Because it was still excellent. Go to Wilf's; enjoy the atmosphere; the tremendous service and the delicious food. There's something about being there that will add to the romance of any evening. It would be good for any celebration including business meetings as well.
The service was great and the singer was wonderful but the food was WAY over priced and gross. It’s sad that the food was so bad cause it was a cool place.
Great stop for lunch! Food is good and the ambiance was nice.
I made this reservation weeks ago for my boyfriends birthday as noted in the reservation and when they called to confirm it I said it will be for his birthday dinner. I have been to Wilfs many times, date nights or mother's day dinner celebration so this was nothing new and we knew the waiters, to my surprise the service was average and they did not acknowledge his birthday. Wilfs is fine for a regular date night but I won't be celebrating any of my friends or family's birthday there again.
Fabulous! A true gem. Old world elegance, the finest service, and excellent food. Soft jazz at the bar added to the warm and wonderful ambiance without disrupting our conversation. Highly recommend.
Food was way over valued from what we were charged.
Great place for happy hour! Food was delicious and James our waiter/bartender was delightful!
I can't say enough about John, Douglas and crew. We were celebrating a marriage, three birthdays and a funeral for our family. We chose Wilf's for a variety of reasons: quality of atmosphere, quality of food, quality of service and overall ambiance. The dinner was perfectly paced, the attention by the staff was caring and timely but not overbearing, Kerry, the magician added a different level of fun, interaction and levity. My out of town family has stated that they don't want to dine anywhere else when they're in town. Wilf's has been my now husband and I's go to place for special occasions and we love that we were able to share that with our family. Wilf's, thank you so much for your kindness and care. Being with you guys at the end of a very tough day was exactly what we needed. Here's to seeing you again soon!! <3
Food was good but not great. Service was excellent.. wanted to make sure we were happy. We will go back.
Service and overall experience cannot be matched. The quilty of banter is unsurpassed in this town. The people-watching is the ultimate. The banter between the bar and the manager is to die for. It's upscale and homey at the same time. Tableside cooking is endearing and a real experience. The food is good, and yes, there is a LOT of great food in Portland, so we aren't saying it will be the best steak that you ever had, we are saying you'll have a really great meal that is an experience if you order the steak Diane. You go for the overall package to include live entertainment. No, not the best singers with the piano player, but they were good and the experience overall us what it's about. A group of folks who all seem to know each other passing the microphone, some better than others...Sure, when we first sat down there was a chatty child behind us and my first inclination was to be annoyed, but he quickly quieted when the music began so all was well. A child with manners in Portland...shocking, I know :) If you want an overall fun date night experience, go to Wilfs. You'll love the staff, James, and John especially.
Side note - we've been into Wilfs other nights later in the evening and the entertainers have been phenomenal. Get the table side dessert, they do cherries jubilee and sometimes baked Alaska.
Great food and the live jazz was nice to listen to. We had the prime rib special. Too bad they didn’t have any horse radish sauce with some spice to it. Service was good. Cherry jubilee was excellent.
Loved the vibe, live music. Overall it was a wonderful experience
John, Maitre D, has been there for ever it seems and he is one of the staples of the restaurant that keep us coming back. He is friendly, personable, professional, and attentive. His service is impeccable and he absolutely drives the place. I can't remember our waiter's name, as it actually left us with the opposite impression. He had a phony sugary demeanor and seemed put off any time we made a request that required him to leave the table and come back with something. The music was a little loud but since we had a table in the back it wasn't bad. This is an old time upscale restaurant that feels like you've gone back in time several decades to experience upper class dining. The location is less than desirable as you're surrounded by homeless and street citizens everywhere you turn. I would only advise you get here by cab or uber; I would not feel comfortable parking my vehicle in this area or walking through the parking lot or surroundings to get to the restaurant.
The Tony Pacini trio was delightful to listen to and my burger off the bar menu was excellent.
Been here several times over several years. Food was much better this time than more recent times — probably a new chef? — had some new Italian-influenced dish in the menu that were generally well prepared. The place is still too overpriced; we always come with a Groupon that makes it more reasonable if one doesn’t order sides. I came with a designated birthday on my booking; all I got was a quick Happy Birthday from the waiter when it was mentioned.
This is our third visit to Wilfs. We brought our in-laws specifically for the quiet atmosphere. Unfortunately, the night we were there, there was a very large party of guests who were loud, sabotaging our plan for an intimate evening with our family. Although this is not the restaurant’s fault and we don't hold that against them, we did not expect the atmosphere to be like a loud brew pub.
Ambience was great and service was nice, but for the price, I expected MUCH more from the food. It was so underwhelming I would have rather stayed in our hotel room and had a Domino's pizza. Salads were swimming in dressing. Pasta was very plain. Risotto was bland. And dessert (which we hoped would be the saving grace of our meal), a New York cheesecake, was so incredibly disappointing. Putty-like texture, and didn't taste like cheesecake.
That being said, the service was so nice and attentive, and we enjoyed the live jazz. Unfortunately, if the bill is over $100 for two, we expect the food to be enjoyable.
Our particular server seemed very experienced but not at all interested in helping us. Our server and maitre’d both seemed very stressed about the private event. We were rushed to prepare our order decision, but then were abandoned for quite a while before we could actually place an order.
The ambiance is very well done. It is somber and pleasant. The food, however, was decidedly bland and uninteresting. Every piece seems to be fresh out of the freezer after being delivered by a Sysco truck.
Delicious food, great service, and wonderful live jazz music. Some items are prepared tableside which is a fun experience. Food portions are typical of a 5 star restaurant, on the small side. Soup or salad are extra.
Lovely Christmas decor. Excellent service and food. My friend really enjoyed his birthday at Wilfs. We always love the jazz.
Anniversary dinner !
Wilfs is our favorite go to place for all celebrations. John and Douglas do a stupendous job making us feel like royalty with their personal attention. John could do a one man show with his fascinating stories he shares while preparing tableside dishes. The live jazz music is an extra treat. The food’s taste and presentation are consistently superb. A classy and fun evening out!
I've recommended to several of my friends! It's a pretty penny but the Thanksgiving email treat helped me out a ton. Craig and Geegee were very kind and welcoming, I never had to look around to ask for help.
