80/20 at Kaelin's
In 1934 in a neighborhood community known quaintly as the Highlands a local couple named Carl and Margaret Kaelin decided to open a family restaurant. Kaelin’s Restaurant was born and over the years thrived creating countless memories for generations of Louisvillians. The restaurant became known as the “birthplace of the cheeseburger” serving the first version of this timeless classic for over 70 years. This claim to fame is argued amongst historians and the real origins are unconfirmed for the record books. However, if you mention the name Kaelin’s Restaurant to anyone from Kentucky you will resoundingly here, “the cheeseburger place?” As this angle wasn’t enough Kaelin’s boasts another equally impressive distinction, Kentucky Fried Chicken. In its infancy KFC and specifically Harland Sanders himself cooked and sold his famous chicken within these walls. Kaelin’s will forever be the first business to serve the colonels famous recipe in the city of Louisville.
This was our 5th time to Kaelins and it has gotten better each time
We had 7 in our party and the server did a great job of keeping up with waters & drinks. All the food arrived hot and was delicious!! Everyone agreed that we needed to come back again to try some of the other menu options!
It was an absolutely great meal and experience! Thanks, Bill, Chris and the 80/20 Kaelins team for making this special lunch so great!!
This place was reccomend by friends. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I had the ribs special. The ribs were tough. The potato salad and coleslaw was absolutely the worst I have ever tasted. The server was the only redeeming thing. I felt sorry for her having serve such bad food.
Great food, great service.
Chad and James are terrific and we had a great evening! Bean soup and burgers are delish!
The omelette was a little bland, but the waffle was delicious!
Best burger in town!
The food was exactly what I wanted it to be. I was pleasantly surprised by the service, which did not visit to often but also never left a empty dish on the table or let my drink become empty without asking if I would like more. The space looked good the food hit the spot but the service was perfect.
Great last minute dinner out on the patio. Brussel sprouts, onion rings and burger were fabulous.
We enjoyed Sunday brunch on the patio. The chicken and waffles were delicious, the chicken hot and crispy and the waffles mouth watering. The service was on point,
Great family-friendly spot! Good options and the ice cream is excellent
Everything we ate was delicious and hot. Our server Devon was really attentive and sitting on the patio was relaxing.
This is our third time to 80/20 Kaelin's and it was truly our best experience
We waited over an hour for our food. We all had the cheeseburgers and the flavor was bland. The waiter offered to comp us desserts, so we ordered ice cream. The desserts were great. When we got our bill we were charged for our desserts. Instead of waiting longer for our waiter to fix the bills we paid and left. Will not be back.
We go to Kaelin's regularly and this night we took some friends. They loved it too! Can't beat the classic cheeseburger and I love the wedge salad.
We tried this place for my wife’s birthday and everyone enjoyed the food
We had a fabulous celebration dinner complete with champagne and wonderful food. Service was great and the atmosphere was great in the restaurant.
Excellent cheeseburgers! The French fries are to die for. We will be coming back!!
We went for the first time and all of us had burgers, appetizers, and salads. The food was excellent and other item on the menu will bring me back. I especially appreciated the great beer list and the ice cream shop on the other side. Casual atmosphere but a step up from fast casual.
A wonderful dining experience.
PERFECT service with outstanding food. We will return soon.
Visited for Saturday lunch with party of four. Weather was nice enough to eat outside and patio was very nice. Wait staff was attentive and friendly. Most in our party ordered the cheeseburger with fries. The burger had a nice flame-broiled taste but otherwise, was fairly standard. Nothing special (I recall liking the original Kaelin's cheeseburgers better, but this may just be nostalgia). Their wings were good, but hot sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. Another guest tried the roast beef sandwich which he said was just "okay." The beer selection is very weak and the tap was not working this day. Overall good experience though.
Food was fantastic!
My friend and I shared the crab cake appetizer (excellent!) on the patio. Next we shared the 80/20 burger which was tender with tasty toppings. Loved the grilled pickled onions! We opted for crispy brussels sprouts rather than fries and while the flavor was great, we found the texture to be a bit oily and much soggier than expected. That's the only reason I rated 4 stars instead of 5. Bourbon choice was good as measured by whether they had our favorite (Four Roses Small Batch). Our server was prompt and friendly and kept our water refilled which we appreciated on a sunny day. We'll be back!
Love the place. Needs baffles to reduce noise levels
80/20 Kaelins was delicious!! Love the revamp of this Louisville area classic!! I tried the 80/20 burger and it was perfect!!
We really enjoyed our food and service! First visit and we put 80/20 on our list of great places to eat burgers , wedge salad, chili, beef stroganoff and a hot fudge sundae for the finish.
They accommodated a large group of us in town for a basketball tourney. Food was delicious and served hot. Waitress did a great job making sure all were taken care of properly.
This was our second visit and we go there for the delicious burgers and fries. Just like last time, the food was amazing but the service is lacking. They forget silverware, leave the table for long periods of time without delivering drinks, and are generally distracted.
The dining area was loud. Nothing to absorb the sound. Hard to speak across table for 2.
Food was great, especially the shrimp and grits and salmon croquettes. Love the decor but the noise was a little overwhelming. Overall it was a fun time and we will be back again!
Bun was burnt black, not just grill marks 100% black. It never should have left the kitchen. Waitress only said would you like another one. No apology and seemed to act as if i was being to picky. This was my first visit. No plans to go back.
Food was very good. Service was friendly and efficient. Like the building updates. Only complaint was it seemed a little pricy.
The burgers our in-laws got looked good and they said they were. My first experience ever with chicken and waffles was not so great. The waffles were flat and tasteless and the chicken was just some chicken strips. They were moist at least. The waiter joked that the Colonel himself was still alive in the basement making the chicken. I don't think the Colonel would have been too happy with it. My wife got some cheese grits that were really good. She didn't like the French toast but that was because she didn't read the description good enough and it just wasn't for her. I tasted them and they were good. Our waiter was OK, but he couldn't keep up. I would go back and just try something else when it is less busy.
Wonderful service and delicious food. We will definitely be back here!
This was my first time at Kaelin's and I have to say that it was a great experience. The burgers are amazing, as is the homemade ice cream. The salmon croquettes were wonderful, as was the 80/20 cocktail. The hush puppies were better than most's, but I don't care for hush puppies in general, particularly theirs since they had whole kernels of corn.
The service was excellent--prompt and thorough. The decor is interesting but not distracting. My main complaint would be that the place has poor sound design. Noise carries all over the restaurant and the sound system has too low a balance, so the only thing I heard was a mild cacophony of random conversation snippets and the bass line of the songs playing. That said, I plan on returning because the food quality is top-notch and the serving staff is wonderful. Highly recommend!
Good burger, good atmosphere, great ice cream, wonderful selection in menu, great decor
Really great burger and shakes. Disappointed that the onion rings and fries are the frozen crap you get anywhere.
Loved our first experience here. Burgers were delicious, fries addicting, drink specials were scrumptious, and service was fantastic! Only 1 downfall is the music is VERY loud, turn it down a notch and everything would've been perfect.
Burgers were very greasy. The restaurant lacks any atmosphere or charm. A step above fast food. Good fries though.
