It's been ages I've wanted to try 8 Hoxton Square though was never able to get in as I didn't have a reservation or there was a private party.
This lunchtime I did manage to get a reservation. When my friend and I arrived we were the only 2 who were unrelated to the owner, as in family or staff. They had a private event scheduled that afternoon a bit later the rest of the restaurant was empty that afternoon.
The staff are very friendly and I love the ambience though the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered a polenta dish being a vegetarian, it was overly greasy and didn't have much flavour. My friend ordered a turkey dish, which was good though I think she bit into some kind of bone so she didn't finish her meal either.
What I absolutely loved was the pudding - I had a delicious gingerbread ice cream with actual bits of gingerbread cookies. My friend had a warm rice pudding, yum.
Fantastic food, great presentation, reasonably priced (drinks too!), great ambience and attentive staff. What more could you want?
8 Hoxton never disappoints - one of my fave local gems. Beautiful food, and relaxed and cozy vibe.
My boyfriend and I went for dinner here on a Saturday night. It was freezing outside and the restaurant was cosy and welcoming, providing much needed respite from the weather. The atmosphere is laid back which suited us perfectly. The waitress was very helpful and suggested some lovely wines. We had the 3 course Christmas menu which was £30 a head. Overall, it was good value for money. It would have been nice if a complimentary drink was included. The portions were also a little on the small side. That said, all of the food was delicious. I would definitely go back to try the a la carte menu. Recommend it if you're in the area.
Lovely restaurant set in Hoxton Square. The food and wine were excellent. Feels like a cosy neighbourhood restaurant. We will definitely be back.
Pros :Good but limited menu delivered by friendly knowledgeable staff. Good value wine list with large number of 375ml carafes available. Not overtly hipster considering it's location!
Cons : Standard small tables that are too small for the 'sharing plate ' approach that is encouraged. Low level of lighting would be alleviated by tea lights on the table (but not enough space!)
Food was a bit fat/oily but typical from British cuisine tough. Overall good experience
Excellent food, perfectly cooked. Some innovative some classical. Excellent price, will be back!
Interesting and unusual menu. We were a party of 4 and all chose different food, all of which was delicious. Friendly service. Restaurant was empty (only one other table was occupied) probably as it was a Monday evening so there wasn’t a lot of atmosphere. Prices were reasonable. We had a good evening.
The food was good when it got to us but service was incredibly slow. We waited 40mins for our breakfast to arrive and some items never made it. All in all a laissez-faire approach to service. It was a shame to not make the most of a great location and food.
Nice environment, food was amazing, tasty and fresh. I've been with my friend and definitely we will come back
Tucked on a square in Shoreditch, 8 Hoxton Square welcomes with its warm, intimate environment and serves up deliciousness from start to finish. The staff delights with kindness and knowledge and excellent timing.
I had seen great reviews for this restaurant so I decided to stop in. Menu was limited but I found something that looked good. Restaurant was pretty empty compared to the others near it. When I came in there was only one other table of two. By the time I left another couple had come in as well as a group of three. A table of four came in but then left after finding the menu options were too limited.
Food was pretty good. A little salty. The two servers seemed like they’d rather be anywhere else. Smiled to your face but seemed to be judging or complaining in quiet conversations. I probably won’t be back but might be nice for a quiet date.
My boyfriend and I ate here while visiting from NYC. We split a special steak, potato, and kale entree. It was even more delicious, creative, and vibrant than expected. We really appreciated the local, seasonal bent of the menu and the quiet ambiance of the space. One thing to note--because the menu is small and constantly changing, there is no guarantee that you will be compelled by the dishes listed on your particular day/night. That being said, we definitely settled on a winner of a dish!
I found it to be a bit pricey but the environment and the food were absolutely lovely. Would like to go again when the company pays!
Nice location, small restaurant so great place to catch up and service was really good too.
We got in after friends and Guardian recommendations. We love the place - location, ambiance and service. But , the food ...... was interesting but did not "come together" . Quail eggs for example - (and this was not to worst dish) were simply hard boiled quail eggs in a shell! nothing creative, no sauce or something next to it.
Hope they will be back to the level of the initial reviews
Food, wine and service absolutely perfect. The restaurant is in the quiet Hoxton Square and we were able to sit outside. Wonderful restaurant!!
Great food, decent size of portions and plates and good service.
My only complain is the lack of light on this hipster places: it's cosy when having a drink or a date, but not helpful when dinning with friends.
Great experience. Super friendly but professional staff, good food (we had an excellent steak) and great drinks (some of the best negronis in london)
Food was decent but the manager was moodily banging around in the background creating an atmosphere. We got charged £5 for opening what I assumed was a refill bottle of tap water (in the same bottle as the tap water) but it turned out to be fizzy, which we didn't even want. We also weren't allowed to swap any of our breakfast elements, bacon costs more than mushrooms apparently.
As a frequent visitor of 10 Greek Street, I was really excited to try 8 Hoxton Square and it didn't disappoint! The food is as fresh and delicious as 10 Greek. We ordered multiple small plates and two mains and ate every last bite. Highly recommend the speck, the courgette flower, and the fish plate of the day. I love how the menu changes so often to reflect what is in season. The service was very attentive but not pushy, which we loved. Highly highly recommend!
Managed to get a booking on the same day on a Saturday evening which was great. The service was really good and the pork was perfectly cooked but the fries and squid were too greasy and overcooked.
Great service, food and location - couldn't fault it!
Lovely sunny day to sit outside and have interesting food from a small, but delicious menu. the house white wine very nice too!
Went for an early meal so the place was empty but service attentive and food very tasty. Will definitely go back.
Down to earth
Fabulous little hottie restaurant
Wonderful or well reproduced creations
Overall a nice gem
Normally this place is fantastic. Compared to normal it wasn't s good but still better than most places
A small, spartan-looking place that serves very well-cooked food from a wide range of styles. The service is informal but efficient. It can get a bit noisy when it's very busy.
The restaurant is quite small with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. There were six of us and we started by sharing some of the tapas dishes - baby squid, padrón peppers and baked cheese, all delicious. The main courses were outstanding, basically delicious food without being pretentious in any way. We had huge juicy prawns with chorizo, plump mussels in a chermoula sauce and middle white pork belly with a mustard sauce. The red wine that we chose (Primitivo, Puglia) was also excellent. We were too full for dessert but sampled some of the interesting sweet wines from the dessert menu as digestifs. The staff were friendly too, happy to chat. All in all a great evening.
Great (central) neighbourhood bistro. Have been going there for the last 4/5 years and it's consistently good. Great wine at good prices. Ask for the little black book...
Savoured every mouthful
8 Hoxton is very convenient for concerts at Hoxton Bar & Grill. The food was tasty and there is a pretty good choice of wines. I was unhappy that the only time slot available on the Open Table site was 6pm, as this was very early for the following concert, when the restaurant was actually almost empty for virtually all the time I was there.
We loved this place - the food was excellent, the wine was good value and the atmosphere very cosy. Just wish we lived nearer!
We had a lovely time at 8 Hoxton Square. Great food (the bread was delicious as well!), attentive and friendly staff.
I came to this place a few times already and have never been disappointed. The menu changes regularly, everything is fresh and seasonal, and the plates are as beautiful as tasty. Wine was also very nice and the service very friendly.
Consistently great! I would definitely recommend it for any occasion.
Well priced wines too.
Booked on the afternoon thanks to a recommendation from a colleague. The winelist he told me was very good value. And he was right. I ordered a lovely Austrian white (grape unpronounceable) which was £33 and delicious. The service was attentive and informed and the food was well seasoned and delicious. We had cheese to finish and a glass of red. Two critiques, the mussels were cooked beautifully but a little bland. The truffled brie was too overpowering, it let down an otherwise well selected cheese plate. But service and wine spot on.
Lovely ambiance great staff and gorgeous food. Would definitely recommend.
Really surprised how delicious the food was. Such a great night. Quality food and service!
