The food was awesome, but service that evening was lacking. We were handed two different dinner menus which the server said everything on both menus was available. We never received a wine list, so we didn’t order any wine. The wait staff seemed to be struggling that evening and wasn’t very attentive. Other than the service, the food was really good and the ambiance was great.
We haven't dined here in about a year and sadly, the restaurant seems to have declined and to us appeared struggling to stay in business.
The menu seemed to be a slightly reduced version in terms of number of dishes and cost of ingredients. Crab cakes are now shrimp cakes. The only fresh fish on the menu was tilapia instead of salmon.
The maitre d'/waiter/bartender was pleasant and helpful, but spread very thin trying to cover all the tables. The chef was trying to help out delivering some of the checks, so unless we just hit a bad night, when an employee or two called in sick, they seemed understaffed.
The food was presented well. My roast pork was a little over-done and dry. I like spinach, but it seemed like they got a bulk buy on the stuff because it seems to come with every plate I saw.
I think the ambience there is still quite nice and a good respite from the noisy bar scene on the rest of San Pedro, so I do hope they stay in business.
very small menu, new york steak hard , even on medium rare, bad choice from chef on placing sweet mash potato under, steak,we were told was mash potato, server mixed orders and gave wrong cook steak, and no water for my table,
gelato was more watery than creamy.
We enjoyed the casual warm ambiance of 71 Saint Peter together with attentive service by Kelly and other staff. We both had the cream of carrot soup with ginger which was yummy, and the pork loin dinner which was very flavorful too. We also enjoyed some wines by the glass and found the overall costs to be very reasonable.
This was 11/18 and the restaurant was cold inside as outside. We asked if the door could be shut and never happened. Im sure it was so they could bring food in and out to the diners outside. However, the doors still could have been shut in between
It took almost for someone to wait on us and the place was not that busy at approx 6pm. We were not told of the specials (had to learn them when the waiter working with e the table next to us recited them well after we sat down.
I asked 2 times for a water and two times for bread. The food came to the table but not at the same time. My wife has the capellini (hers came early)and I had the chicken with polenta which came about 5-10 minutes later. Sadly, the polenta was not hot and the chicken was not fully cooked. We could not wait so I have about 1/2 the chicken and stopped as it was rubbery. I thought the waiter would have the manager come over but never did.
The waiter did offer my wife a glass of merlot on the house.
In closing, we have been dining at 71 St Peter since it first opened at least 2-3 times/yr. This is the first time we had this level of poor service and it will be awhile before we try the restaurant again
I had been wanting to check put 71 Peter for sometime. Located in San Pedro square, it is near a few other restaurants and offers a parking lot across the street for patrons. The bar in the back is adorable. Old rustic, tons of options for libation. The kitchen is somewhat open and you can watch as they cook. It has street seating which is very cool to people watch. Last night we went in for dinner. It took them over 15 min to come to out table. We had to ask repeatedly for bread and never got it. It seemed to us that they had the bartender 1 waiter and 1 Bus boy for over 18 tables. Three tables walked out as after about 15 min they went next door to eat. I won't lie and say that didn't occur to us as well...... when the food came, we wish we had. It had a gloop of hard cheese on it...it wouldn't melt. The pasta wasn't fresh but was cooked ok. The rest of the plate was a hot mess. It was capellini. Usually that comes with basil tomatoes and red peppers..this had sausage bites with gravy , dark roasted onion like a French onion soup and peppers. It was not taste and looked even worse. We ask for a coffee to go and never got it. We finally just left. I felt bad for the server. He had a good attitude even though he must have known and felt it was going to be a hard shift to work. I wouldn't go back, nor would I recommend.
I had the waitress-recommended capellini, which had virtually no seasoning and was almost tasteless; certainly not worth the price. Coffee was old and burnt. Even though it was cool outside, the ceiling air conditioning was blowing fiercely down on us. Open Table should stop listing this place.
We went with some friends to celebrate a wedding anniversary. We arrived early as we had plans for the rest of the evening. The place has a cool vibe to it as it is located in an old historic building. The service was excellent. Wait staff was attentive but not intrusive.
The menu was a single page. There was a nice variety of choices but not overwhelming. We enjoyed an appetizer of baked brie in a phyllo dough crust with some nicely cooked, but crisp apples and a walnut butter. A tasty opener.
A salad of greens, goat cheese and a bacon drizzle was a perfect set up for the main course. Main courses included a flavorful pork steak with a dried cherry demi-glace with roasted potatoes and spinach. A nice New York steak thickly cut, cooked a perfect medium rare with turnips and potatoes had just the right spice to support rather than overwhelm the flavor of the meat. The best of the main courses was the risotto du jour featuring plump, nicely charred shrimp. The risotto was creamy but not mushy and came with some bitter greens for texture and complexity.
Dessert featured a well done, but not spectacular creme brulee. It was a little overdone, but well flavored. A sour cream fudge cake with homemade honey gelato more than made up for a slightly overdone creme brulee.
A fantastic experience in the midst of San Jose's hip, downtown restaurant hot spot on San Pedro.
Service was very good. Food good - not special or excellent; narrow menu (we had dinner). But worth going back for a quick casual meal. Although a bit overpriced. Liked the wine (New Zealand). Wood seating/table ambience were uncomfortable, thus not a good place to relax with friends.
Booked a reservation at 5:30 to have enough time to make the sharks game at 7:30. At 7:30 we still didn't have our food and missed majority of the first period. The service was horrid. No water, drinks/refills. No checking in our updating. We had to ask several times for items and the waiter hit me in the head with his elbow as he was having to take back the raw steak that was served to the table next to us. When we finally got food it was ok. A bit cold, but ok. Other tables were also having similar issues and no manager was in sight to address any patrons, apologize or offer concessions. The waiter did tell us that the kitchen is too small to keep up with the number of tables they have. When leaving, I peeked in the kitchen and saw there was barely enough room for two people to stand in the kitchen. Bottom line. I won't recommend this place or return for another long wait.
We arrived at our scheduled reservation time: 5:45 p.m. By 7:25 we still had not been served our entrees. We had let the wait staff know that we had to leave at 7:30 for the theater. Luckily we had had two appetizers and a salad (which were very good), but there was obviously a problem in the kitchen and we had to leave before our entrees were served. This was a disappointing experience, as I had eaten at 71 Saint Peter's before and had enjoyed it very much. It would have been helpful if we had received some explanation for the inexcusable delay, but none was forthcoming.
Nice place, but it was terrible understaffed. The minimal staff that was there was overwhelmed and gave several orders to the wrong tables. They comped some of our drinks for the inconvenience, but the chaos distracted from what would have otherwise been a great pre-concert venue.
According to our server, the restaurant is family owned and they have difficulty staffing up, which seems like a silly excuse when you know what the SAP concert dates are in advance.
With a little more effort on the owners part it could be a great restaurant. Right now it is just above average. The food is decent, but one of our Entree's came out of the Kitchen as a 1/2 serving. Lots of mis-steps here.
It used to be a great place with excellent food. The food was OK and was over salt. For our dish, the Risotto's special, it was salty and they forgot to put the garnish and pickled vegetable on top. The crab cakes was salty. The beef carpaccio was good. the creme brulee was ok. Overall, the food was not so good like I remembered. We went there to celebrate my father & cousin's bday but was disappointed. I don't think I'll be coming back there again...
I found this restaurant on yelp. The food was great, but the service had something to be desired. It took forever to get the food, to get drinks, refills on drinks, our bill, but the food was good. Don't come here if you are in a rush, or very thirsty. But the food is good.
We dined on Sunday, the final night of Dine Out SJ, and chose the Prix Fixe ($45) with wine pairing (a steal at $15). Served a complimentary glass of Proseco to accompany the gratis foccacio, followed by a delectable charred octopus salad with rocket, EVOO & goat cheese, paired with a lovely Italian Pinot Grigio. Next was the star course (who knew?), prosciutto with melon on intensely flavorful watermelon with candied nuts, goat cheese and balsamic reduction - amazing flavors & textures! - paired with a nice Rose. We both chose the short rib with Swisscheesy Polenta and beef reduction, paired with a great Cab. The polenta and reduction were superb; the short rib was a little dry & tough, but still OK. Dessert was a brilliant, beautifully caramelized creme brulee with a delightful sweet cocktail (I think he said with Campari, but tasted more complex like Punt y Mes). Service was fantastic all around, from getting a prime table after arriving 50 minutes early to the fabulous waiter and servers. Will definitely return! I'll try & add some photos, but don't see that option on my phone...
My husband and I both love to go out for dinner. This time we felt for something more casual. Have to admit that we weren't sure what to expect. We were happily surprised. We chose the "Prix Fixe Menu with wine pairing". The quality of the food was great, sitting outside, the ambiance was nice... the only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because we asked the waiter to tell the kitchen that we didn't want to rush and if they could give us some time between the various dishes.... this didn't work out. As soon as we'd finished our appetizer, the entree came.... 90 minutes later we got our check - "whenever you are ready" :)
We had the San Jose Dine Downtown special prix fixe menu, 4 courses for $45 plus optional $15 wine pairing. It was a very good value and the food was yummy! The portions were just right for people not wanting huge portions. Our server was friendly and accommodating. A photo of the salad course with octopus, fennel, lemon vinaigrette, feta, and pickled red onion. Yum.
