Third time eating here. I want to like it better for all the other good qualities of service and ambience, but this time I had worst entree - an overdressed salad with rotisserie chicken on argula greens - so much oil, no flavor and the chicken seemed off to the taste.

On the plus side, an inventive goat cheese icecream was delightful, but rest of the fig dessert fell flat.

Had the cobb salad with shrimp on it and it was ok. The shrimp was bland and rubbery it didn't look like they deveined them. They also made them look funny probably for presentation purposes, but if anything they looked weird. We asked the server to bring us some more bread and she either forgot or just didn't do it. I've had more attentive servers here and she seemed more concerned with removing silverware or excess plates/glasses. I've only been here 3 other times and usually the food is great. I'd say that after this time, I won't be back. For the cost, the food should be fabulous even if it is just a salad.

Impeccible! Silent service, seeing what we need, handling things when needed. Old World fine!

We scheduled a last minute pre-theater dinner there before seeing Mean Girls and the restaurant easily accommodated us, while at least one of their competitors would not. Our group was more than happy to eat here—we all love it. Food was excellent and we appreciated that the seated tables were spread out so we all had space. Service was great, as usual—she had on-target suggestions and a great sense of humor. We also had some wonderful cocktails. That octopus appetizer is still amazing!

Our party increased from 6 to 8 at the last minute. The staff was welcoming and quickly moved us to a lovely, private table for 8. The food was outstanding. The waiter was very attentive and managed our complicated bill without complaint. We were all visiting DC for a meeting. I will certainly come back next time I am in town.

The jazz musician were great... they even took requests. The food was wonderful (though small portion for me!), but still satisfying. They autumn menu was more on the seafood side, nevertheless, masterfully done.

The restaurant, even with the live jazz, is great for good conversations.

The host and service were exceptional.

Excellent quiet table at large window looking on Penn Ave. Excellent lunch options [six choices. Fine service from wait staff who knew this was a birthday lunch. Excellent wine options.
Well done! Will be back... in the high ceiling, large windowed room.

After te review in the Wash. Post we were looking forward to have dinner here. We were greatly disappointed! The celery root appetizer was not very good, with the celery root undercooked. The carrot Fricasee was an unappealing mix. The salmon was pedestrian with unfavored veggies. The chicken was good, but not enough chicken; the garlic pudding was (??) and cold; and the chicken liver raviola didn't have anything tasting like chicken liver. Last, the goat cheese ice cream was terrible. Its hard to believe that 701 is the same ownership as Oval Room where we've consistantly had outstanding meals.

701 is one of my favorite DC restaurants for a good meal from a creative chef in a lovely and quiet atmosphere at a price that, for DC, is moderate. The menu seems to change seasonally, which adds variety. I have come here 4 or 5 times this year and have been pleased every time.

We went late. Near empty restaurant but food arrived slowly. The best way to describe the food is uninspired. Probably arrived too late for the kitchen.

Really excellent food in a comfortable setting. All of the portions were perfectly-sized; not so small as to leave us hungry, but not so large as to prevent everyone from enjoying three courses because they were too full. The cold corn soup was packed full of flavor, the sirloin was perfectly cooked, the chicken was delicious and moist, and the rockfish was flaky and perfectly cooked. Desserts were also delicious; the butterscotch perfectly balanced its flavors and the panna cotta was perfectly done. Cocktails were nice, and the live piano added to the ambiance.

This is the most overpriced restaurant I have ever been to. It was not about the cost rather the dinner entree itself. A $12 salad no more than 4 bites. The NY strip was literally 2 -3x1 in slices with 1 bite of cauliflower. Spaghetti meal was cold. Nothing special to make it worth the cost.

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary here -- it was a wonderful experience.
Highly recommend!!
The food was not only very tasty, the presentation was incredible.
The staff took great care of us, the food was outstanding, and atmosphere was perfect. We were there on a live jazz night, and the music was really good.
My wife is gluten-free, and she was accommodated effortlessly.
We will return!

Very interesting menu including vegetarian options. Restaurant spacious and relatively quiet, unless it is "happy hour" in which case you might want to be seated away from the bar, which is easily done given the size of the restaurant. Food prices are more reasonable than the wine prices, which are high, even the wines by the glass. A full dinner for two including wine will run $200 or more.

Only 1 disappointment the compressed watermelon which we all wanted to try had been taken off the tasting menu
But the octopus which we had instead was fabulous
