701 Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Table and ambience was nice. Jazz in background good touch. Our server was prompt and clear, maybe a lil rushed but good overall. Food was delicious but a little pricey for a valentines day special. Dessert was delicious. You ice cream is the best I've tasted. Valet service was convient.
The food was good, but not outstanding. Service was attentive, but not obsequious. Food came a bit too quickly, suggesting that it was prepared in advance. Primary complaint was the restaurant was not crowded, but they bunched everyone in the same area, creating a circle of noise, which made for a difficult conversation.
It had been some time since I dined at 701. The staff were exceptionally attentive, courteous and very professional. But the facility showed a great deal of wear and tear. For example, the ladies room was badly in need of repairs - broken tissue holder and toilet seat, dim lighting. Throughout the facility there was worn carpet, chipping paint, etc. The cost for two pumpkin soups, two Caesar salads (just one with steak), sparkling water and coffee came to $73. The food was ok, a bit on the bland side. Again, I commend the staff for exceptional service and courtesy but I doubt I will return.
The overall consensus was that the service (from the manager, the host, server, etc.) and ambiance was amazing. The food was pretty terrible, however. The gnocchi was so bland and probably the worst I’ve ever had. The sauce tasted literally like watered down liquid. My friend ordered it as well and doesn’t like saying anything so she ate it out of hunger because we arrived starving, but I left it uneaten. That said, they were so kind and understanding and swapped it for a tortellini for me- thank you awesome server! We did discuss that the things we enjoyed were the tuna tartare and the bourbon dessert. Whole group agreed it was definitely not a place worth coming back to and we eat out in DC frequently. The service and atmosphere with live music was so fun, but didn’t make up for the lackluster food.
I enjoyed my time at 701 restaurant. We went there for a business lunch as a large group and they did a great job accommodating us in short notice for restaurant week lunch. The mushroom gnocci was not my favorite, but I really enjoyed the carrot appetizer and the desserts. Overall, I would definitely recommend going to the restaurant!
I went for Restaurant Week and it was just okay, not bad, but not great or memorable. The server was borderline annoying- too familiar and cracking jokes. The bread basket came after the apps and was cold and hard. The salad was good with a nice tangy dressing, the beet app was pretty bland and the yolk added nothing special. Both main courses were very small portions-the hangar steak was very good but the salmon was bland and did not pair well with the stiff watercress. The fudge cake portion was good and bigger than the entrees! However, I found the Budino to be inedible, it had a strange taste so I only ate the cookie. The server noted that and said "oh well, that's why we have RW to see if you like something or not" (weird). I give them credit for being the rare restaurant that has good spacing between tables; however, the ladies room was too dark and cramped. I doubt I would return.
Overall experience was great. The waitress was extremely helpful and pleasant. She answered all of our questions about the menu and constantly checked on us throughout the meal. Only issue was my wife's salmon was not fully cooked and the waitress gladly took it back to the kitchen for more cooking. Otherwise our dining experience went extremely well.
I'm recently retired, but was meeting friends who are still working. Everything was great, especially that we were able to linger after dinner so one of the friends didn't have to wait an hour or more at Union Station for her train. The staff made us feel welcome throughout the evening.
I always enjoy a meal at 701. For the first time since I started going to this restaurant (5-6 years) I sent something back. The tuna burger had far too much ginger-which overpowered the tuna and other seasonings. No problem the waiter took it back immediately and returned with a lovey Cobb salad.
I won't hold the tuna burger against them - the food is too consistently good for that.
Tried this for restaurant week. Wow - how did I miss this gem. The service was excellent and quick (I was on my lunch hour). The food had incredible flavor and was delicious. Even the biscuits were delicious with their butter and sweet/spicy jelly. On top of the delicious food - their wine was reasonably priced - very hard to find during lunch time in DC. I now have a new favorite place to go for lunch.
This is a great restaurant with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Our server, Tristen, was wonderful - not only attentive but a very engaging personality, as we dined a bit early and it was not too busy at the time, we really enjoyed conversing on a wide range of subject. We ordered venison, which is not commonly found on DC menus, and it was delightful. The sommelier recommended an excellent wine pairing. The lobster bisque we ordered arrived with the lobster visible on the plate with the bisque served by Tristen on top and was a generous portion of lobster. The home made ice cream was a nice finishing touch. Don't let the downtown location dissuade you, it is conveniently located adjacent to the Archives metro but there is also valet parking available for $8. What I have always especially enjoyed about 701 is the delightful live piano music and we again were not disappointed. On a recent visit to 701, a friend of mine requested ginger tea which was not on the menu. She advised the server to make it with fresh ginger and hot water and they accommodated so it is also especially nice to dine where the customers are treated as guests. Looking forward to our return visit soon!
I chose this restaurant to bring my mother for her 50th Birthday, and it was a great choice. Everything was amazing! My mother felt special the entire time. The service was great, the waiter even brought out a birthday cake for my mother on the house. I’m so glad I chose 701 Restaurant for that special occasion!
We go to 701 every time we visit Washington and have always liked it. This weekend was different: the food was disappointing. The server didn't even ask how I wanted the duck Brest cooked which should have been a clue. It was overdone. My wife had salmon which she said was fair. We had brought friends from Philadelphia to 701 after telling them how good the restaurant was, and they too were disappointed. That said, the service was attentive, welcoming and friendly.
We should have known that a relatively empty restaurant on Saturday night was a sign. There are too many excellent restaurants in the city for us to return to 701.
701 was a nice place for a business gathering. Our table for 8 was located so that conversation was easy to have. The waitress was friendly. The meals were well plated, but no one came away advocating for a return dinner. I had the rockfish which was a nice size and was fine. Gnocchi was underwhelming. Others had steak. It is conveniently located off the mall area near the archives. Live piano was nice. Prices were a little high.
Everyone, from the staff at the host stand, our server, the sommelier and the bartender, Brian, was absolutely wonderful. Very pleasant, helpful, and attentive without being intrusive. We had planned on NYE dinner with another couple followed by a black tie party and when the other couple cancelled due to illness we debated just doing our party but are so glad we still went to dinner here, and will definitely be back again. Great music, as well!
Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. The food was good but nothing really special. The service left something to be desired. The waiter was attentive but really seemed distracted or uninterested. To me that makes a big difference in the total experience. The restaurant is very pretty and allows for lovely views but the evening was just OK. Had been looking forward to this dinner but now, not in a hurry to go back.
Booked 701 for Christmas Eve especially for family and friends. Unfortunately we felt very hurried to to give up our table as the server appeared to want to depart for the evening... But that was not the worst of the experience, was overcharged for the meal and then the manager? And or hourly shift supervisor went to void the charge and recharged me, he ended up charging us twice. 48 hours later after noticing it was double charged we called the restaurant to have it remedied as it's a simple fix in 2017, the assistant manager told us, he didn't have access, didn't have the skills, didn't have the accessibility to fix the overcharge, and we would have to wait 5 more days for someone in position of authority and or responsibilities to be able to fix being overcharged. We would have gladly accepted the fact that the restaurant was dated and the service was poor to Fair, but in this day and age a restaurant that sells itself for being upscale does not have anybody on staff to fix a simple issue as an overcharge??? It appears and felt as if it were an establishment that rated itself much higher then reality dictated.
