Decor and room quality was a little best up and smelled a little dank but the food was fantastic.
Is it possible to lose weight at a steak house?
At 5A5 you can do just that.
Well for starters they will likely forget half of your order.
That's what happened to us. We ordered a wagyu steak along with cremini mushrooms and mac-and-cheese.
Only the steak arrived.
And this was after the waitress had already apologized to us about the lateness of: our drinks; our waters; our menus - everything.
Finally I asked for the manager. It was telling that he didn't know that he should have already made an appearance.
"What happened," I asked. "This used to be my favorite restaurant. Now it's a hot mess."
The manager had no idea. He allowed that the service was slow and unorganized and gave lip service about making it up to us.
"I get where you are coming from - but we still don't even have my credit card back. This is a mess from start to finish. I couldn't imagine bringing a client here."
To be fair, the steak was delicious. So if you like your steak with a side of unpredictability, 5A5 is perfect.
Anniversary dinner was amazing. Food is always good and consistent and the drinks were on point. We'll be booking 5A5 for years to come!
No longer has tomahawk steak and no longer has the night club. The menu isn't much to choose from IMO and slightly over priced... HOWEVER the service was great and the food was delicious! So, you're sure to always have great food and service.
One of the best meals of my life the tempura lobster is unreal!
Beautiful restaurant and beautiful food. The service was what I expected for a fine restaurant. Our server was friendly, acknowledgeable and very attentive. The food was cooked perfectly and melted in our mouths. We were very disappointed to find our teen aged daughters had to share a large common restroom with men down stairs from the main restaurant. One would think a fine dining establishment could at least have a separate powder room for their female customers instead of a football stadium style bathroom in a poorly lite basement in which they were forced to share with men.
Our server was great, the food was delicious, the palette cleansers from the chef were a nice touch, and we had an overall great Anniversary dinner.
The steak was smothered in some sort of A-1 type steak sauce... huge disappointment for a $70 filet. The drinks were absurdly slow... pre-dinner cocktail arrived a minute before dinner, wine ordered for dinner came after meal was finished, cappuccino arrived once dessert was complete. Pretty disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber.
We have a bad experience.
We have been asked if we have any dietary restriction and my husband said "no cilantro", the waiter looked kinda rude way as if he said something weird and said "we don't have cilantro in anything" but when he brought the carpaccio we ordered, surprise there was cilantro on top if.
Also, we don't know how could they manage to make one of the steaks undercook (even blue) and one of the steaks overcook (more than medium) while we ordered as "medium rare".
Lastly, Our steak tartar had silver skin, one of the last things you would expect in steak tartar.
We wouldn't go back to this place again.
Excellent food and and service. The price is fair for the area$$$$$$$$$$
It was a pleasure eating at this place.
AMAZING! There is no other word to describe the food for 5A5. It was the best steak i've ever had and the truffle mac n cheese so good I could come back just for that!
Service and cocktails were great but steak was just ‘ok’.
Would have like to order more drinks as we were having good conversations but the waiter was not very attentive. Also, the 4oz steak was not worth the price we paid for it.
Incredible. Worth every penny. Such beautiful food and atmosphere.
Food and service were excellent. We will definitely be going back.
The food was great, although some of their prices are through the roof. Service was perfect and the ambiance was awesome
We were looking for an out of the ordinary steak house in the Financial District and this popped up on Open Table. Little did we know that it was a Japanese steak house specializing in various forms of Wagyu as well as whiskies. After being presented with four of the most marbled steaks I have ever seen, three of us opted for a 32 oz bone in rib eye (American) which was fabulous. We started with an excellent wedge salad as well as heirloom tomatoes and our colleague the vegetarian ordered the entry entitle “where’s the beef” which was an array of roasted vegetables. The two sides we ordered were the sweet potato and the button mushrooms, both of which were delicious.
The wine list was adequate and relatively reasonable and the service was excellent.
I highly recommend this restaurant and we will definitely be back.
Food very good meat top quality but the price you pay for all is not coherent with the lack of service and table equipment.
It was my 3rd year anniversary and we wanted a great steak to celebrate. We've never had Wagyu so decided to try this place. The servers were very courteous and provided examples of the different Wagyu beef that they had. In addition, the presentation was spectacular as seen in the attached pictures. The server also provided excellent recommendations of drinks to pair with the Wagyu beef. We were so full by the end of the beef, that we had to take home the sides.
Great options. Steaks come with a lot of dressings but the team is happy to accommodate anyone who wants their steak naked and pure. Food was great. Superb spirit and wine selection.
one of the best ribeyes in recent years! our server was great too!
Great dinner not a lot of side options we only did the Mac n cheese to share but it was still nice
5A5 was a great experience for my date and I. My date is originally from St. Louis and had never experienced such a high class place before. The service was good for the most part. My only issue was with the helper bringing our plates out. He spoke very fast explaining what we were having and left very quickly. Other then that the service was impeccable. Jessica our waitress was AMAZING for the start. She noticed my dates menu was nasty and she brought over a new one that was clear for her to read. Down to her explanation of the wagyu meats. My date was very IMPRESSED and so was I. I definitely would prefer this restaurant to all my friends and family. Its definitely a great experience.
Food and service were spectacular - I was slightly disappointed everyone around us got amuse bouche but it didn’t spoil the night. I thought that the space could use a freshen up to fit the environment. Some lights above were missing filters and the windows to the exterior needed a change to darken the setting.
The A5 experience was amazing. The staff are great. Wagyu came out perfect.
Too expensive and the food tastes normal but the price is too high.
Appetizers and main course are just a little but the price is too expensive. Not worth the money to spend.
We like that it has 4 different styles of wagyu and it has 4oz options so we could try different types out!
Somehow we prefer the crossbreed wagyu over the 5a wagyu though.
For starters we ordered lobster tempura and steak tartare. They were amazing!
I normally can't eat raw food but dining here was fine!
Food was ok, not great. Each dish felt like a little much in a gilding the lily sort of way. The oysters didn’t even taste like oysters because of all of the other ingredients on them. Every steak came with some sort of topping. I prefer when good ingredients are kept simple to let them shine. Restaurant itself was very nice, great staff.
Great flavorful food. Fantastic service. Seating is not crampy and is spacious. Very happy with everything.
Still the easiest place to get true Nippon Wagyu 5A5 in the Bay Area. Great service, and they accommodate triple corkages with class and grace.
To those who thought it was too loud, the dance music has been turned off. To those who demand EDM with their Wagyu, just ask or bring your MP3.
Great place to catch up with friends/family while enjoying delicious cocktails and food.
Two month anniversary
The steaks are good. The prime rib was so-so...not the best. The Wagyu, of course, was delicious. Sides and desserts were good; I really liked the sorbet. It was refreshing after a heavy meal of steak.
The only down side was the service could have been a bit more attentive. It took a little while to get the server to take our order after explaining the menu, and then once we get our meal the server hardly came by to refill the water or ask if we need any other items. Would have been nice if they left the bottle of water on the table. Then I could have just helped myself to the water since I tend to drink a lot of water.
Celebrating a birthday and everything was great. The food was delicious and the service was good and attentive. The 32oz. rib eye is a must try for meat eaters. The oyster shooters were delicious and the fries and ‘truffle Mac and cheese added to the good food and experience. I would give 4 1/2 stars five is difficult as It would have to be spectacular to get a five in my opinion. It was close to a five, either way it’s a great place with good food.
Does not seem organized. Food did not come out in sequence, server removed courses before we were done, entree came and had to wait for 5 minutes before getting up and asking for utensils. Lots of people running around, but no coordination. Meat was under cooked and I got three apologies but still had to wait yet again to get a spoon to eat m souffle with.
Really solid, best steakhouse I've been to in SF. Pricey, but what you get is really good. Went for my girlfriend's birthday and they threw in a birthday dessert and ceviche on the house. Steaks and sides were both amazing. Great selection of Japanese and American oriented options from a meat and booze perspective. Thoughtfully walked through the nuances of Wagyu beef, the processes behind it, and what you're supposed to look for as a consumer. We loved all of the food and the service was excellent. Overall, strongly recommend.
The steak was cooked good. The appetizers were good. That was a highlight of the night. The rest sucked. as soon as we (6 of us) sat down the guy asked us what we wanted to drink and then pointed straight at a $300 bottle of wine. Putting the host in the spot. He then brings out flight of Japanese steaks that costs $550 and begins to rave. Extremely uncomfortable.
he didn't feel like a waiter, but he felt like a salesman trying to upsell. I was just there for steak dinner. Instead I felt like I was shamed because I didn't choose what he suggested. Never felt so ashamed to for choosing $70 steak, $17 fries and $18 a glass wine, and a $20 souffle. After tax and tip, the bill came out to about $900 after for the 6 of us. Never felt so small spending so much. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Not going back here.
The Waygu carpaccio was incredible. The Waugu steak should have been an overpriced appetizer. Beautiful dinner but pricey for what it was.
