54 Mint is a hidden gem in SF. You will not find better Italian food served with more enthusiasm and pride than is offered by the staff here. It is so delicious that we have learned to order family style so we can taste everyone else's choice. Their seasonal variations make this a dynamic menu that reflects the earth's best offerings. Both vegetarian and nondairy folks can find a large selection of dishes, though they would surely miss out by not trying the grilled octopus and oxtail selections. Even the bartender worked hard to find us the right "dry" vermouth and a perfect not-too-sweet moscato rosa. Most delicious birthday dinner ever--Thank you 54 Mint!
Will definitely come back!
The food was unique and delicious but very expensive. For 2: $130.00 without wine! for 1 appetizer and 1 pasta each, 1 dessert and no 'secondi' meat or fish dish. Not worth it unless money is no object
ANTIPASTI - We had fresh mozzarella and crispy broccolini, incredible - though we had hoped the cheese had a bit more flavor. Warm octopus and fingerling potatoes are also a GREAT choice.
MAIN - i had the risotto - simple, light and exquisite. Perfectly al dente and the taste of fennel was incredible without being overbearing. He had the carbonara, it’s creamy and basically everything you want out of this dish. Portions are just right.
DRINKS - i had the L’espresso, espresso with Frangelico and coffee flavored vodka. We both had wine, but i let the server choose for me since we’re not wine connoisseurs (:
DESSERT - i had Panna cotta, SO smooth and creamy. Perfectly sweet and topped with balsamic. He got the chocolate cake which is mildly sweet and a perfect finish to a meal. I also had a cappuccino, which had incredible foam on top.
Very well designed restaurant, welcoming and kind staff, excellent BTG selection,
My husband and I had been wanting to go to this restaurant for a long time and had never gotten around to it. The food was good but not exceptional. The service, on the other hand, was perfect...including a lovely Italian accent.
The upstairs dining area was almost empty when we arrived, but still we were seated to a same table with another couple. We asked to get another table and they arranged that. Service was good, but our main course took longer than expected. The fish of the day was fine, but the vegetarian pasta was a disappointment - dry pasta missing some flavours.
Great authentic food. Great service.
Not sure what to say other than It was fine. Not terrible, not great. I wouldn't refuse to go back, but I wouldn't propose it or rush there. Service was charming in its own way, but a little harried (can't really blame him, there was an enormous private party going on upstairs, so the smaller basement seating area was packed). White wine was warmer than it should have been, bread was so-so - which I only comment on bc it's an Italian place, so the bread could be expected to be on point (and I think they make it in house?). Interesting, off-the-beaten-path location, and seemed to have a nice bar.
The food was amazing, we were in town for a trade show and it was recommended by customer.
The food was great, amazing oils, salads, fish, all top notch! The service was impeccable, 5 star for sure!
Highly recommend! You can dress up or dress casual.
Good food, service was rushed. Arrived at 8:45 and Saturday night crowd was clearing out. Waiter started pushing us to order before taking our wine order. Decent Italian food but with a Parisian attitude. Most likely will not go back. Too many other good choices for Italian in San Francisco.
Portions were too small for pasta - even for California. They could have provided more. Seemed a little greedy.
Wonderful dinner there for my mom's b-day. Grilled octopus melted in our month. fried smelt was delicious, pasta carbonero and oxtail dinner were so good. did get crowded and noisy as the evening went on but I guess the price of living in a big city.
What a FABULOUS meal! I asked if it was was possible to have gnocchi with Bolognese sauce( which wasn’t on the menu). The manager came right over and made it happen. It was SO excellent! Delicious Italian wine as well. My dinner partner has to be very careful with what she eats—allergies, etc.,. The manager spent a good amount of time patiently consulting and helping her make a decision. Her Risotto was magnificent! We were both thrilled with 54 Mint. Thanks for an extraordinary meal and experience!!
Wine recommendation was spot on. The food was delicious and love the ambiance.
Excellent experience. Great way to celebrate our 20th anniversary.
Outstanding food and drinks. From manager to servers to bus help, the staff hustles and strives mightily to please. Impossible not to love this joint.
This is one of the best, most authentic Italian restaurants in town. Everything I’ve had has been excellent. There isn’t a bad thing on the menu.
One of my favorite restaurants in SF. Almost always.
The staff is very welcoming and friendly. The food itself is incredibly delicious. I was here for a business lunch and will return for dinner. It’s a wonderful place!
The food was excellent and so was the service - very attentive to our specific needs. This was just the right place to spend time with someone special.
Yum, everything was amazing. I would recommend this for any occasion. The good and service were perfect.
Small portions, confusing service, exceptional cauliflower/gorgonzola starter, fluffy gnocchi although not very flavorful sauce. Might need to try it again, but service needs to be better. Our server asked my colleague if we wanted water, if she took ice or not and then left without asking me for my preference or input. My colleague and I tilted our heads and looked at each other, baffled by how weird that was. Pretty expensive for inattentive service, and I would have liked a few more salad choices.
Overall: Wonderful food, great atmosphere, terrific service. The octopus was spectacular, as were the lamb chops. I also highly recommend the Acqua di Cedro Nardini for an after dinner delight.
Consistently good! Thankful for service and unique ingredients to make amazing FRESH meal!
Food was extremely average, and we ordered the ones recommended by the waiter
We had the mixed green and beet and blood orange salads, the Fettucini al Romanesco and a halibut fish special. All were great. Service was very attentive. We were there at opening time (5PM), so it was quiet and almost empty. Our only complaint was the basement ambience; the dining area is in a basement with exposed pipes on the ceiling, kind of dingy. I guess if you like that kind of ambience it would be fine. But the food and service were excellent.
Halibut presentation was unappetizing. Pasta carbonara meat was chewy and not flavorful. Service was good but overall a disappointing dining experience. Restaurant was hard to locate without a GPS to guide us. Not recommended.
Service was best I have had in San Francisco, food came out with perfect timing and was delicious
Every course was terrific. I really appreciated getting 3 lamb chops instead of the typical two for the second course. My wife's cauliflower "flan" was to die for. Arrived an hour early for our reservation, but were seated in about 20 minutes. Brought my own Brunello...$30 corkage higher than typical for me, but SF is not an inexpensive place to dine.
Very very slow service. Bad food.
I was expecting the food to be good after reading all the good reviews. Unfortunately, none in our party enjoyed the meal. Thr appetizer was decent. And that's it. The risotto was a tad too tangy. The halibut was bland. It lacked salt and pepper and the plating was not intuitive at all. Even the dessert wasn't good either. So it was quite disappointing since we went to this restaurant to celebrate our friends' wedding and Valentine's Day. Service was good though.
So so delicious and staff is great! Very quaint and cute
The waiters were really friendly and nice!! The food was awesome as well!
We got to 54 Mint 30 mins early for our reservation. Checked in with the hostess and she assured us that we might be able to get our table early within 10mins. Great! So we waited around. 10min came, 15min, 20mins, she keeps saying in a few mins. Finally, at our reservation time, we were seated. Now I was there for my wedding anniversary but I was also there with my two year old daughter and if you been to the restaurant before, there really is no area to wait inside. So the three of us waited outside for 30mins for our reservation time to come up. I just think she should have been clear that our table wouldn’t be ready early and we could have came back but everytime I checked in with her, she kept telling me a few more minutes. We got seated and ordered two pastas and two mains. The pastas came out at a relatively reasonable time but qualitu was very different. One pasta was amazing but one was very poorly done. Really heavy on the salt and pasta was not fully cooked even to Al Dente. My daughter and wife still enjoyed the pasta so we just moved on looking forward to our mains. Well... between the pasta and our mains, there was a good 50 minute wait. What’s more is unknown to us, we suddenly had a new waiter start serving us half way through our meal. That I didnt mind as this guy served us last time we were there. But the 50 mins wait for our mains really bothered me as my two year old had finished her meal and was getting rather antsy again from waiting. Finally our mains came and boy, again heavy handed of salt on both dishes. My wife’s steak was also overcooked to what she requested. As much as we wanted to send it back, we didn’t want to wait another 50mins for it to come back especially with my two year old reaching her bedtime. So we finished and left, i didnt even finish my main. I can understand it being an off night, but on my wedding anniversary? Really?
We arrived earlier than our reservation and the hostess graciously found a table and sat us right away. The service was outstanding and the food was exceptional . You felt like you were dining in Italy . Everything was authentic and and fresh. We would definitely go back. Best lamb chops!
We had tickets to Book of Mormon. Made early reservations so we could dine and relax before the show. Everything was excellent...
The pasta was superb!
I love it here!
Really solid mid Market/mid-Mission lunch spot. A tucked away gem with great Italian comfort food at reasonable prices. Good for small-mid sized groups. Service is very good, and unrushed as it should be. If you are in a hurry, let them know.
