Johnny has a series of Pizza and Calzone outlets with the 400 Gradi restaurant being the flagship of the group.

The 400 Gradi interiors are all about classic Italian textures, with walls of espresso ribbons of Stucco Veneziana and sweeping golden calligraphy. Black and antique gold pendant lights and a charcoal Terrazzo style polished floor all reflect a golden hue. A bar honed from a dark veined slab of 160 year old red gum, salumi cabinets and antique slicers are all part of the theatre… Outside there’s plenty more tables for dining where the usual sophistication of the ‘other’ end of Lygon Street is apparent.

Johnny is the first Australian ever trained in Naples to the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana VPN rules and he’s the association’s Australasian Principal, travelling the region ensuring pizzeria’s are of the highest standard before officially inducting them into the Association.

Staff made you feel rushed from the time you sat down at your table. Then they delivered entree with main. Over priced. Will not be back.

Great food, amazing service only negative was how loud the tables around us were, could hardly hold a conversation at a two person table. Family friendly (eg. Children running around and crying)

Absolutely delicious Italian!! Pizza was to die for as was the garlic focaccia. My friend raved about her gnocchi. I could have easily ordered one of everything off the menu. Extremely fast service. Highly recommend.

The pizza is not that great and quite expensive, and a bottle of water cost $9? That's ridiculous, the service is a bit slow,. The mixed grill seafood was not as good as I expected, but we enjoyed the lamb.

Felt service and food was good. Had a good variety of appertisers/entrees. Tried 3 plus meat and cheese board. Enjoyed all. Waiters very friendly, just came to the table a little bit too often to see if everything was alright.

The food was great the service was a joke. Our waiter took our order and that was it we didn't see him again. No other waiters would serve us unless we asked. I'm Italian and I can say this without any bias Italian waiters have a certain arrogance about them, unless your a 23 yo pretty girl. If your a 23yo pretty girl that's the place for you. I bet with a smile they'd even wash your car.

In general, good food at good restaurant. But the pasta portion is very little. Paying ard 25 bucks and getting a kid size portion isn't pleasant. Lastly, this review thing is way too long. Make it short and concise to get more reviews.

I have enjoyed the Brunswick version of 400 Gradi and so was eager to try the Essendon incarnation. The food was great but the service left alot to be desired. Dishes weren't bought out in the order requested, drink orders were overlooked, we were either inundated with waiters interrupting us to ask how things were or marooned when trying to order coffee or ask for the bill. When the bill was paid, the change wasn't returned to the table so we could choose the tip we left.

Came to 400 Gradi in Essendon for my 21st Birthday celebration because I had been to the Crown restaurant and did the pizza course at the Brunswick restaurant. Great food! Ordered a starter entree for the table and then took an hour after we finished to receive our mains course which was disappointing. For that though, we received a free salad and bowl of chips to make up for the delay... Also, $3.50 charge per person to have a cake we brought which was a bit surprising.
