Countless Minnesotans dream of having a place on a lake. Third Gear offers guests a comfortable place to kick back and relax.
Our owner, Eric Ernst opened Ernie’s Eatery in downtown Forest Lake in early 2017. When this property on the shore of Forest Lake became avaiable he had a vision of what it could become.
We welcome guests by land or water for lunch and dinner. Our menu specializes in high-quality food that is special without being overly fussy.
Our staff is passionate about providing you a memorable and relaxing experience. Our team includes a mixologist who serves signature cocktails and a pastry chef who creates over-the-top delicious desserts to ensure your meal is outstanding from start to finish.
The best patio on Forest Lake is yours to enjoy, however we do not accept reservations for patio tables.

Would I recommend to a friend? Yes...and no. Be very wary of going to this restaurant, especially if you have somewhere to be afterward. The food is amazing! Loved every bite of every dish and app we ordered. Drinks were great too! However due to "an event" the restaurant hosted the other patrons on site were often left waiting extremely long periods of time before being checked in on by their server, creating long lapses without drinks or even getting to order our dinner meals. From our arrival until our departure we spent over 2 hours and 15 minutes there. This may be fine if we were with a group of adults, and had decent beverage service. But we had young children that actually fell asleep on their chairs due to the extreme amount of time it took for the adults to finally get served and eat. Again...the food is amazing, but just don't plan on having anywhere to be afterward at a certain time.

We stopped by last Saturday around 5:30 for their barbecued ribs and weren't disappointed, they were excellent! The dining room was uncomfortably cool but that was rectified quickly by the manager. We're looking forward to dining there again.

We made our reservation through OpenTable but once we arrived at 3rd Gear they were closed due to a private party. 3rd Gear may be a good restaurant we don't know but we do know OpenTable is a poor service and we will never trust it again.

Food was very good!! Very loud, server was very polite and nice, but slower than molasses!!!! Food took 45 mins to get after waiting for server to actually take the order. But if they could speed up the service and educate the wait staff... the food well worth it!

Within the past week, they have introduced an expanded menu with additional entrees and a much larger wine list. The additions rounded out their menu, adding some seafood, steaks, pasta dishes and entree salads. The fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp was one of the best such dishes we’ve ever had (lots of huge shrimp and nice thick sauce) and the apple vinaigrette entree salad, with the addition of a chicken breast grilled to perfection, was very good. They were open to my suggestions to improve the house dressing served with the salad. Impressive wine list as well. The remodeling is complete and the decor projects a more casual atmosphere , the improvements inside and out are very well done and Eric has created a great vibe at this restaurant. The service was better than our last visit. If you haven’t been there in awhile, give them a try! I recommend.

Food was good, service was good, a bit on the slow side and the waitress seemed frazzled. She did a great job, but just needed to relax. Some more lighting would be nice. It was hard to read the menu while sitting outside when the sun was going down. I noticed several other tables who arrived after us use flashlights on their phones to be able to see the menu. Love the yard games, gave our kids something to do. Recommend a few more games available to use. But otherwise, awesome! We will be coming back another time.

I was very disappointed. Such a beautiful restaurant and location on the lake I was hoping for more. The menu was just ok. Sandwiches, pizza, burgers, nothing special. We waited a very long time for our food and the restaurant was not even full. No one was waiting for a table. The waitress took a long time to bring us our drinks and when she did she said they ran out of glasses. What??? Really? and why would you tell the customer that? Not a full restaurant and you run out of glasses? The food was ok, but one of the hamburgers was cooked unevenly and one side of the burger was not done as requested. It was odd. My pulled pork sandwich was good though. I hear their Key Lime Pie dessert is very good, but we didn't want to stay for dessert. I hope they can improve their menu and certainly improve their service. It's a shame to see this lovely place run so shabbily.

Was told someone took my reservation only to get a nasty gram from open table about missing my reservation. Aps took about 35 minutes to come out. Once they were out they were very good. Ordered the special, fish and chips. Come without the chips, they arrived just as I was finishing my meal. They have work to do on consistency, staff training, overall management. I hope they can clean it up as I would love for them to make it. Waitress was LOVEY!
