Food, ambiance, and service were all top notch — a very special meal. Though they are known for the tasting menu, dining a la carte was also wonderful.
Food is exquisite and service is excellent.
Excellent food, very good service, I will go back anytime, a real jewel in the food industry around the Bay area, lot of attention to details
We've been going here since it opened, amazing creativity in the menu and pairings. The Sea Urchin Creme Brûlée is still the the best thing on the menu!
We were a party of 6, ordered the 7 course tasting menu. Service was accommodating, but food was underwhelming and overpriced. Dishes were not balanced, nuts with hamachi were rancid, raw vegetables on another dish overpowering
Highly recommend the 7 course tasting menu!! The chef has an exquisite palate -- the flavors were vivid and unique. Three words: smoked soy sauce. WHAT? If I could buy some in a vat, I would!
The little gems salad was fantastic, as was the King Salmon. Also, the side Brussels Sprouts were excellent.
Friendly and helpful hostess and server, delicious meal. It was an interesting menu so had a hard time deciding. We really are looking forward to returning.
The flavor combinations can be a little weird, but the chef manages to make them work.
For various reasons, we hadn't visited Third Cousin in a while and had almost forgotten how memorably wonderful it is. There wasn't a remotely false note in the entire meal, from appetizers to desert. Sleepy Bernal Heights has a Destination Restaurant here in Third Cousin without question in my opinion.
Delighted with first time dining experience with varied options and wine selection. Will look forward to returning for another special occasion.
It was my birthday and we put that down on the reservation but the restaurant didn’t even take note or just a simple “happy birthday”. Instead of being placed further from the entrance as requested we on my reservation we were graciously placed in a table right behind the Maitre D’ at the very entrance to the restaurant. I was very disappointed and had much better birthday celebrations in other restaurants.
Then came the food. Yelp reviews said the portions were minuscule, and when our waiter emphasized while we were ordering a la carte ( he strongly pushes for the 7- or 10- course prix fixe options) that we needed to have two entrees and a full pasta dish with 2 appetizers to share between 2 people. We went along with the recommendation and ended up with quite a bit of left overs ( not to mention the order of Tartine Bread which we only found out later was separately charged ).
Food is very salty and overpriced.
Although the food was good on average. There were some things that were good and some not as good. We get what they’re trying to achieve but something was usually missing or had too much. On the bright side, we love the ambiance and that it feels low-key. You can come dressed up or down or anywhere in between. It’s awesome for a date!
Though if you’ve been to Michelin rated restaurants, this doesn’t quite measure up BUT it’s still good. I don’t mean to knock at what they’re doing - they just need to step it up a notch. To master their art of cooking. It’s too close to being a GREAT restaurant to lose their quality/mission.
Beautiful, interesting, creative food. Delicious salad. Great for a special occasion. Very good service. The pistachio cake was the perfect way to end a splendid meal. A bit pricey, but overall, a lovely experience. Would love to go back.
Delicious and hot tomato lobster bisque. Interesting and good corn croquettes. Great bread from Tartine. Wonderful pork chop. Not a fan of the flavors in sauce and accompaniments with rib eye, and it was grisly and not particularly flavorful. Duck was ok, not hot enough, and not something I’d order again. Pistachio cake and accompanying ice cream were delicious, as was citrus dessert. Service was spectacular!
Excellent. My wife and I have been here before, but not for a while. We'll be back sooner this time. Food was outstanding, as was the wine and the local IPA. Service was very friendly and efficient and we spoke briefly with the chef/owner who was greeting many of the customers and assuring they liked their dinner. Support your neighborhood restaurant -- as it appears many are doing!
Fabulous wine list, excellent attentive service, every one of our 3 dishes superb (fritters, frisse salad, halibut). Highly highly recommend for birthday dinner!
my dishes were great, but 2 of my wife's dishes from the 4-course tasting menu were too salty. Price for the food was quite high too even without wine pairing
This was our second visit and although we had to wait 20 mins beyond our booked table time, the food was very good again. Not cheap but nothing is in San Francisco.
We reserved a table in this restaurant for our anniversary. When we arrived, there was a 'Happy Anniversary card on the table. Also, Greg, (the Chef ) introduced himself and congratulated us personally. It was a nice touch. We both ordered the 7 course tasting menu. Every dish was not just tasty, it was also creative and very well presented. We especially liked the 'Surf and Turf'. We both are gluten free, and all the restaurants these days cater to this need to a different degree of satisfaction. The '3rd Cousin' is one of the best if you need a gluten free dinner. Almost all their dishes are or can be made gluten free. We very appreciated it. The restaurant was packed, and I was afraid the service could be slow. However, it was surprisingly quick. We had just enough short breaks between courses. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful. Greg asked us how are we doing a few times, and also introduced a few dishes himself.
We liked the place. Great food, friendly and personable staff. I would recomend it to anybody.
Lovely restaurant with neighbor feeling. Food was well seasoned and thought through. Would go again
A superb place to celebrate our anniversary. We ordered the 7-course meal and the staff timed everything perfectly. The most delicious food and incredible service. We'll be back!
Amazing service cuisine wine atmosphere had the four course weekday menu
Super attentive and knowledgeable staff. The food came in perfect order and timing. Every bite was to savor and the wine list impeccable.
The food was undeniably fabulous at 3rd Cousin, from the bread and appetizers to the post-dinner coffee. However, it is hands down the most expensive restaurant on the street, even charging $6 for bread to the table. Cortland Avenue has a number of high quality restaurants where the bill would come to 20% less than at 3rd Cousin. In addition, my husband and I were seated at a table behind a wooden wall, which blocked light to the table and felt curiously claustrophobic. Despite the great food and good service, I'm not sure the experience was worth it overall.
Fantastic experience, great food and service. Especially enjoyed some of the more adventurous dishes (uni creme brule)
This is one of the best meals at any price I've had in the city. Gary is a world-class chef. Make the trip to Bernal and get the Grand Prix Fixe tasting menu -- you won't regret it!
I have to save 5 stars for my favorite restaurants that offer over-the-top, highly elevated dishes, an exceptional ambiance, and truly professional wait-staff. Having said that, if I was simply ranking Third Cousin in its category alone, it would definitely receive 5 stars. The menu is terrific and offers a very nice variety, all of the dishes were well prepared and delicious, and the room was not too quiet (I hate when I feel it's so quiet that I must whisper) nor was it too loud. I must say that I have been here a few times before and felt on each occasion that I had inattentive and even a tad snooty service. I am happy to say that our waitress was wonderful. I didn't see any of the waitstaff who had slightly soured my previous visits and her great service will definitely entice me to come more often.
Been following 3rd cousin since pop-up days and keep going back for more. Love the venue, Chef Greg is a wonderful host & he sure knows how to use truffles to the max!
Server was nice as she keeps serving us water and also was patient as we stayed on about 15 min even after Bill was paid to finish the conversation . Plating pleasing to the eye .
Amazing food. Great experience and will definitely go back again.
Our dinner was nice. On a Saturday night, not too crowded until after 7pm. Service and food were nice. It's a nice neighborhood restaurant, whether for a casual dinner or to celebrate an occasion.
Pleasant surprise for neighborhood type restaurant with an Oberkampf vibe combining hipster chic with grownup menu . Skip the Beuzy sparkler and go for the Champs
Nice location, staff and drinks. The portion size was very small and little to no vegan options.
We aren't big eaters so shared two appetizers abd an entree. The first were unique kale fritters that resembled round creamy & cheesey balls with a spicy, not hot sauce. The second were truffle Porcini raviolis and lastly Alaskan halibut with mixed baby vegetables. We shared two desserts. One was pistachio cake with a dollop of gelato and a second of upside down Meyer lemon tart in a glass. We each had a glass of rosé Rhone wine and Illy coffee.
Food is slightly above standard. We ordered 4 appetizers and two dishes have similar taste.
Great staff, got attention from the maitre’D as well as waiter. Helpful, friendly. Food was fun and different. Wine pairing exciting.
This restaurant was outstanding by every measure. We are looking forward to our next meal there. It was so excellent that the restaurant should be called 1st Cousin. Believe it is that good!
Went for a pre-graduation dinner with family, a bit of a foodie, visiting from NYC. Loved everything we ordered: presentation, flavor, portion. Service was also personable (one was being trained but she did fine) and music (lots of 80s) wax’s fun.
Will definitely return for another meal.
