Celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with friends here. The staff were very pleasant and the food very good. However the toilets need a bit of work on them but overall a very nice experience.
Appalling service. One hour wait between starter and desert, bought the bill out before I'd even been asked about whether me or my partner wanted a desert. Lied to me saying that there were dauphinoise potatoes on my plate when in fact it was a fondant. Food very average, could've cooked it myself. Don't get why this place has such good reviews, the place was dead on a Saturday night and I now know why. Won't be returning.
Good food in a very pleasing ambience. Service was good with all the staff being friend,y and helpful. Decent value for money, would definitely visit again
Excellent location, superb menu with not too much choice to confuse you. Excellent service and I thought a reasonable price at £55 for a 3 course and a 2 course with drinks. Would definitely go again.
Great for pre-theatre meal, small portions food not very hot but tasty. Just one veg was served. Good location.
Staff. We're lovely and the service was quick.
Extremely disappointed. Starter (Terrine) tasteless. Hardly Chef prepared. The chicken main meal was similarly tasteless. Ambience stale. Downstairs room cold. Expected fine dining. Far from it. The waitresses were friendly though. Won't be back.
Beautiful intimate dining room although a little quiet on the evening we visited so it lacked a bit of atmosphere but this wasn't the restaurant's fault. Service was first class and you were made to feel special which was lovely. The food was well presented, tasty and good value for the 3 course set dinner. If I had to make a slight criticism, we found the food a little plain. The terrine was ok but could've done with a dressing or chutney, just a bit dry. The chicken with brie was big but not particularly juicy and tender and served with saute potatoes, plain green beans and red wine gravy. Nothing wrong with it at all just felt a little like something I could've made easily at home. The lamb was beautiful. No pineapple jelly left for the creme brulee so opted for chocolate brownie instead which was rich but delicious. Overall still a pleasant experience just felt something a little lacking.
Good food and brilliant staff.
We loved it. Our first trip to York.
What a fabulous space, listed building with a bit of history, matched with very attentive service and food which was almost terrific, but for a few minor details like a lack something green to give colour and variation to an otherwise great venison three ways, for example. Definitely worth a visit, even in the competitive market that is York's food scene.
Booked a meal here as a pre theatre meal for my 54th birthday for my daughter. Not a stones throw from the Royal Opera House, we arrived to a warm welcome, service was excellent, very attentive, food gorgeous, quick between courses hardly any waiting time. I would have scored all five stars on my review, however our table was downstairs and lacked atmosphere and given it was my birthday I would have liked to have been in the main restaurant.
It was a birthday Lunch celebration. The food was very adequately priced. The set menu for lunch was full of choice and variety. The starters were good very well presented. The main courses were substantial portions. The desserts were amazing. Would definitely recommend the restaurant.
Excellent - Came to York for my girlfriend's birthday - Ate here Saturday evening, beautiful restaurant, food was excellent - highly recommend the Hake with Crab. Good value, very good service. 5*
A lovely restaurant booked for my partners birthday. The food was excellent. Everything about the experience at 31 Castlegate was excellent. If we visit York again we will definately book again. Thankyou.
Enjoyed another pre-theatre dinner here. Always good food and service.
Great find in York, excellent food and set dinner menu great value for money. Would certainly go back again when next in York.
Visited for a quiet birthday with my hubby. Have been a few times before for a girly evening. It's consistent in the quality and service. Good food, reasonable prices with menu (a la carte or set menu) options. It's cosy, always busy enough to be fairly full and you leave feeling satisfied that you've had a good meal for a good price.
Location's good, in the centre of York and close to one of the biggest car parks.
We will definitely visit again.
Good Ambience and Good Food. Rather let down by a mix up in the Kitchen that left us waiting quite a while for food. In spite of that we would certainty go again and recommend to others
delighted with recommendation from our hotel, would definitely return next visit to York
Nice restaurant. Lovely and friendly staff.
I visited here with my parents and young children during a long weekend in York and thoroughly enjoyed my dinner. The welcome was warm, the service was friendly and efficient, the decor unfussy and neutral, the wine list varied and offering plenty of choice and good value. Most importantly, the food was exactly what I like - fresh, expertly prepared and full of flavour without a hint of pretension. Definitely one to revisit!
Beautiful food, lovely polite waitresses. Had the veal myself, wife had lamb. Beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Definitely will visit again on our next trip to York.
Booked this restaurant through open table for a special treat for my 50th anniversary. We were on holiday in Yorkshire and spending the day York with friends. So easy to find and we made very welcome by the very friendly & helpful staff. The food was delicious & every one of our party was impressed. Will definitely visit again next time we are in York.😀😋
Food took a long time to arrive and was then overcooked. A large table next to us was exceptionally loud and we were positioned next to the toilet entry. All-in-all not an experience that I would recommend to others.
We went tothis restaurant because of the great reviews and they weren't wrong! The service and the food was outstanding
Had a nice graduation dinner here on Friday evening. Great atmosphere, tasty food and kind waiting staff. Would've liked a bigger gin selection though!
Excellent service, really good food and nice ambience. Would definitely recommend and will visit again when next in York.
Excellent service very friendly. Nice starter, main was so so, desert fantastic. Poor wine menu.
We visited this restaurant for an evening meal whist visiting York. The exterior may not look too brilliant but once inside the service is great but the food is totally exceptional. We would be regulars here if we lived closer. Don't miss the Venison
We had an excellent meal at 31 Castlegate. It's often difficult to find somewhere good to eat on a Sunday evening, and we have often experienced the lack of choice and running out of roasts that you get at this time of the week. Not so here - we had the full menu choice with good value set menus as well as the daily specials and full a la carte and our one vegetarian was well catered for. My mixed crab starter was tasty, colourful and nicely chilled and a spectacular main of venison cooked 3 ways looked and tasted great. Too full for dessert we opted for coffee and petit fours - such generous portions that we had to take half of them home in a doggy bag. A very minor criticism was that we felt the waiting staff were a little overstretched and therefore overstressed! But we will certainly go again and recommend this restaurant to everyone.
All staff very and helpful, great food, would go back next time in york
The waiting staff was delightful - friendly, attentive, helpful and informed. The food was absolutely delicious and very well presented. We booked for a pre-theatre dinner (17:45) so it was initially a bit quiet but soon became busy and atmospheric. Unbelievable value for money (Gourmet Society card). Would go again in a heartbeat! Especially for a special occasion.
Had a lovely meal while staying in York for a few days. Excellent service and very helpful with my wifes allergies. Great Food and very good value.
Looked on open table for a restaurant to go to when on a short break with my husband. This was top of the list and hubby not sure as not so many pictures of the dinning room but reading about the chef nailed it. Glad we went. Best venison dish I have ever had, was amazing . Great value also. Great atmosphere and lovely staff 😀
We were guiding here by the reviews, needed somewhere to dine on our day outing to York. A gem and by London standards the bargain of the year. We opted for 2 x three course set lunch menu and a bottle of wine. We were the last diners in for lunch. Couldn't fault the place. Waitress very friendly, modern British food. All well presented, no complaints at all. We thought we might be rushed, but no, they lets us set the pace. The cost: under £60 for above plus coffee and a bottle of fizzy water. Well worth adding to the list of places to go whilst in York
A must place to go eat. We had a lovely experience and the lamb was to die for, best lamb i have ever had. :) will definitely visit again!
Great meal again , been coming for a years and never disappoints
Menu provided a good selection for the tastes of all of us.
Service was prompts ans attentive.
Food was well prepared and presented.
Good all round without being particularly memorable.
The Restaurant was comfortable and had a cosy feel about it. The food was good and fairly priced compared to other similar restaurants. Staff were efficient but not engaging with all customers. On the whole our experience at 31 Castlegate was fair.
It was a dark and windy night so the cosy warmth of both the venue and the staff was very welcome. Our starters of Harrogate Blue bombes and game terrine were delicious and our mains of venison three ways and confit duck were beautifully cooked and very tasty. We were less impressed with the desserts - they weren't bad just not very exciting. One plus point - non-alcoholic beer is available for non-drinkers - a nice change from the ubiquitous sparkling water.
The restaurant feels homely and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and attentive without being overbearing.
All-in-all we had a smashing meal and a lovely evening,. We were also pleasantly surprised by the bill. Highly recommended and would be very happy to go back again!
Candlelit meal for two on a Friday evening in York. Lovely food & good portion size. Very friendly owner and attentive staff.
