Contemporary American
1921 Mount Dora is an award-winning restaurant in Mount Dora, Florida. We are allied with the famed Modernism Museum across the street from the restaurant. The menu reflects a forward thinking look at the bounty of ingredients and culinary traditions that surround us. Our unique location in the heart of Florida has strong influences from the diverse cuisines of Southern Florida as well as Southern traditions from Northern Florida. Mount Dora is surrounded by numerous outstanding farms just minutes away and is equidistant from our Gulf and Atlantic coasts, so we have access to some of the best produce, meat, and seafood Florida has to offer.

We arrived for our first visit on Valentine's Day. We wanted to try something new and had heard great things. We were not disappointed. From the excellent drinks, milk buns, entrees and dessert, our meal was wonderful. Our server was attentive and very friendly. We especially enjoyed the milk bun bread service and the 1921 burger. While the pace might be a bit slow for some, we enjoyed the chance to enjoy a good meal, conversation with one another, and simply unwind for an hour or two. We can't wait to return.

We were a party of 4 for Valentines dinner with reservations . They seated us at a table for 6 which made it very difficult to visit especially with the noise level. The hostess said she couldn’t seat us at a table for 4. The two women enjoyed their meal very much but the two men did not. They ordered the pork porterhouse which was slices of pork and there was no rice on the plate as shown on the menu. One of our party asked them to leave off the Brussels sprouts and just add more rice grits. No grits or vegetables seen on their plates except for minisule amount of vegetable shavings.

Valentine's Day dinner out can be iffy but not at 1921. My wife started with the salad and I had the soup- both were exceptional. My wife had the duck and enjoyed it. My wife teases me about ordering a burger and fries at an upscale restaurant but if there is a better burger and fries in Mid-Florida I don't know where it is! My wife lost an earring and asked the staff to call us if it was found. They did and called for us to pick it up. 1921 is one of our favorites!

My husband & I treated ourselves to dinner out on Valentine's day at 1921...it did not disappoint. Chris our waiter was attentive and personable. The lovely hostess was appreciative we called to say we were running 10 minutes late. We loved all the amazing artwork, decor, the ambiance ...most importantly the food was outstanding! We shared the porterhouse for 2 and had the roasted oysters &grilled octopus for our appetizers. Our evening was even more delighful when we struck up a conversation with the lovely couple next to us...who turned out to be the Mayor of Mount Dora and his lovely wife. Just an all around great experience...we will be back! Thank you making our Valentine's Day so enjoyable ❣️👍

We really enjoyed the Service Brad provided...he gave us our space but was right there when we needed him. The food...oysters, octopus, and the variant uses of squash throughout the starters, salads, and main entrees...were all spectacular. The tile fish was buttery and perfectly prepared. Kudos to the new executive chef and his team. We look forward to the new spin to be placed on the menu. We will definitely be back.

The menu and quality of food preparation has been much better since a change of staff, and Norman exited the picture. Very interesting food preps and combinations. Innovative. Vibrant bar scene, but there are quiet places in the main restaurant for dining.

Food is average, not true restaurant prime, but certainly above general food service delivery meals. Wine selection is very good for the area, and the service is very polished. Chicken dinner was good, but nothing beyond oven roasted chicken. The pork porterhouse was well undercooked, rubbery and hard to chew. It should not have been served so underdone.

We drove an hour and paid $10 for parking a few blocks down due to an art festival. The restaurant was not serving the brunch menu due to the festival , only sandwiches , soup and salads. I ordered the soup and it was extremely salty, my husband ordered the fish sandwich but the bread was soggy due to the fish.... the milk buns were delicious and our server was very nice. I should have called prior to going to this restaurant , it was our anniversary and kind of a fail. So call before you go if it’s a special occasion to ensure they are serving their regular menu.

I was expecting brunch but unfortunately because of the Art Festival they were serving only a lunch service. I was a bit annoyed because the website didn't mention this when I made our reservations. Also, when they called to confirm the reservation... for brunch, they didn't mention this. Not a huge deal...just annoying. The lunch menu was okay and we decided on the pulled pork sandwich and the tacos. I asked about the chips vs fries with the meal and our server said the chips were homemade so we both got the chips. Honestly, they could have been a bag of kettle chips because they tasted the same. The pulled pork sandwich and tacos were both fine but nothing special.
We went to 1921 because the chef had been a guest chef for a James Beard dinner in NY that was excellent so we were expecting more. It wasn't until after we got home and did research that we found out the chef had left the restaurant. So maybe that is the reason? Not sure. Anyway, the service was good and our waitress was very nice. The bar looked like a nice place to have a drink. If I am in the area again I will give 1921 another try...maybe for dinner... or brunch :-)

First visit. The decor inside is like visiting an Art Deco museum. ALL of our meal was so very flavorful. The kind of food that you wish you could just eat all the time. The Milk rolls are a must. Italian Salad was just the right size and we loved the pistachios and bacon flavor. Our entre was the Bone-IN Ribeye. Perfectly grilled. The vegetables were nicely cooked especially the potatoes. Ohhh and we had to have desert. All looked awesome but we landed on the Tres Leche. Yummy....So Yummy.
We will definitely be back again.

Continuing to offer a thoughtful menu that combines surprising elements into a unique culinary experience. Though only in its third year, the promising trajectory for this restaurant and its innovative chef will likely place it among the best restaurants in America. A consistent, caring wait staff compliments the excellence awaiting diners.

Food and service were very good in a pleasant room. Only thing that kept it from being a 5 star, in my view, was that there were no "extras"...things that would differentiate it from other restaurants. Can be a loud room, but fortunately it was not busy.

We made our reservation in the Autumn of 2018 primarily because of Norman Van Aken. Only found out about his departure from 1921 shortly before our visit. Cannot comment on 1921 prior to his departure but will say, based upon our visit this past weekend , the kitchen lacks basic culinary discipline.
Our beet salad was smothered with too much vinegar and the fire roasted pork on a base of brown rice grits lacked taste and look like a plate of mud.

Our waiter was very polished, and attentive. The server was less trained. She forgot our soup spoons and delivered my wife's salad several minutes after my soup was on the table. Otherwise the food was delicious. I selected this venue for a special birthday as my wife and I had done in the past. I am saddened that Norm has gone his separate way as he was an addition to the Mt. Dora cuisine. We will travel to the Ritz in Orlando.

The online menu looked appealing, and the reality was even better. We went for that week's Sunday Supper, which was superb fried chicken, excellent collards and black-eyed peas so good that I asked for seconds. I'm coming back this week with some friends who definitely are foodies so we can explore the rest of the menu. BTW, this restaurant is full of interesting art, thanks to its affiliation with the Modernism Museum across the street.

Awesome New Year's Eve Experience

Chris was our server, as usual. He is one of the best servers in the area, if not the best. He is friendly, courteous, and professional, and always makes us feel like family. His recommendations were perfect for our pallets.

I'm normally not one for Pre-fix menus, but 1921 put together some great options for the night. I was very impressed with the menu. My girlfriend and I got different items and shared them so we got the best of two worlds. The flavors of the gnocchi dish, short rib dish, and desserts stood out the most however. I always love our experiences here and it made New Year's Eve even more special.

Big thanks to the staff and great job y'all!!!
