"1921 by Norman Van Aken" is the James Beard Award winning Chef"s new restaurant in Mount Dora. We are allied with the famed Modernism Museum across the street from the restaurant. The menu will reflect modern Florida cuisine; a new look on the bounty of ingredients and culinary traditions that surround us. Our unique location in the heart of Florida has strong influences from the diverse cuisines of Southern Florida as well as Southern traditions from Northern Florida. Mount Dora is surrounded by numerous outstanding farms just minutes away and is equidistant from our Gulf and Atlantic coasts, so we have access to some of the best produce, meat, and seafood Florida has to offer.

Service was excellent but things went down hill from there. Red wine to cold. Entree was cold too. Portion size on entree was adequate. Lamb stuffed dates appetizer barely had any lamb and was very over priced. Butter rolls not as good as Arnold dinner rolls$5.00, really! Fish entree was average but fresh. Best part of meal were the conch fritters, but needed more conch. Was looking for a good restaurant for a party of 6 but it won’t be 1921. I’ve eaten in 5 star restaurants in France and this food wouldn’t match their table scraps.

Disappointed that you couldn’t order “Sunday Supper” without a “reservation” for such entree.

Wonderful atmosphere in museum setting with the charm of a southern home. One of a kind place. Loved the kimchi fried rice with grilled shrimp.

This is the fourth time we’ve been to this restuarant and this was my least favorite. The waiter made us feel super rushed. The food quality was good but not great. The dish I had was very spicy yet not described as such. For the cost and for a special occasion, I was not impressed.

Service was good and the atmosphere was very casual and nice. The food was a disappointment though... it was served quickly and was hot upon arrival, but we both found our entrees to be bland. The proportion of food was small for the cost ($35 each) - they needed a side or some bread, which we could have ordered but why should you have to at that price? We are accustomed to fine dining and often explore nicer restaurants. Overall, the food is what lost our interest here - the service and location are great. Not sure if we will be back for more than happy hour.

Although it is good that a vegetarian option was offered, the dish itself was laughable for the price. A few carrots, some limp eggplant all swimming in lots of sauce. The bread service should not be an appetizer that you pay for. The cinnamon roll dessert was lacking in cinnamon.

Good food, excellent service, beautiful fancy dining restaurant. Be prepared for a long leisurely dinner. We made the mistake of splitting our small plate order into two courses. By the time the main plates came out we were exhausted.

Hector made sure we enjoyed our first 1921's experience, and thanks to him it was an amazing one.
