1921 by Norman Van Aken Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food and service. A great fine dining alternative in Lake County and there are not many of them in the area. But I have to say what I have said in other reviews of 1921. Plates are too frenchy, meaning too small. And menu is too limited, especially the entrees section. Menu needs to be more varied and creative.
Birthday dinner, my choice for the restaurant and I picked Norm Van Aken. It is new in Mount Dora and I wanted to try it. Food is amazing although my husband needed interpretation of what was on his plate. Limited menu and a surprisingly expensive hamburger. The wines served are meant to accompany the menu, not very many California choices. We will return and try lunch next time or Happy Hour. Definitely on my list.
This was our 2nd New Year’s Eve with their fixed price menu. Totally spectacular cuisine. Just got back from a vacation in NYC and this is on par with the great restaurants we experienced.
We highly recommend this restaurant! The ambience was great, the artwork is like the food: Mind expanding flavors and textures.
Just a great dining experience that is at the top of the list for great restaurants anywhere, especially Central
Florida, of all places! Who knew! Thank you Norman and your team!!!
We intend to return regularly. Not annually. We really appreciated the service as well. Mason, our server was awesome and made us feel at home.
We loved all of the artwork in the restaurant. Really romantic ambiance. The service was excellent. The Elephant drink was yummy and very large.
The food was all delicious and there was a nice variety of choices with unique and interesting flavors.
We will be back!
I was so thankful for the small touches such as the “Happy Anniversary” message on the top of our custom menu, our waitress acknowledging the importance of our meal, and the knowledge...beforehand...of a food allergy. So great! Too expensive for a casual bite...but worth the price for the taste and the service.
Our waiter, Brad M. at table 701, was excellent. Brad was cordial, very knowledgeable and great sense of dry humor. His suggestions on whiskey and wine was spot on. The food menu was varied and inviting. It was excellently prepared and tasted delicious. We enjoyed the soft light ambience and artfully decorated dining room. We’ll be back.
Our server was not knowledgeable about the extensive wine list; in fact no help at all with specific questions or making a decision. The food delivery was slow at best and when we asked for an extra condiment on TWO different occasions, neither our server nor any food runner brought anything or followed up. The food itself was very good- we had the cheese plate, oysters and 1921 burger. However, after our plates were cleared and wine glasses empty, it took another 25 minutes for our server to bring our bill. Overall, very disappointing. While it was far from awful, for the price we expect thoughtful service. We will not be back anytime soon.
My wife and I had dined here the previous Christmas eve and had an enjoyable meal, albeit a more extensive menu was available at that time rather than the prix fix menu on this occasion. Dan, our waiter seemed somewhat bothered at our questions regarding how a specific dish was prepared, but acquiesced to stoop to answer our culinary questions with a rote scripted reply. Within moments of us receiving each of the menu preparations of the 4 course meal, he was quick to cover himself with "everything to your satisfaction" with an inflection which was not a question, but as if a forgone conclusion, which caught me off guard and I found myself saying , "yes" when in fact, I may not have even tasted said offering , but felt obligated to reply. Once I realized his game, I in fact did notice that our plated entrées (duck and snapper) were not hot, but pleasantly enough presented. As such he offered to obtain a new plate for each, but I, not wanting to risk having a less pleasing portion, I declined. Dan, mentioned to me that he had mentioned my displeasure at the temperature of our dishes and told me the manager, Adam, would be out to address my concerns. Adam never appeared at our table which was yet another insult.
Because this was a holiday, I was looking for an experience, and fine food, but unfortunately there was nothing extraordinary here. Desert was an uncooked caramel coated apple, with a stick through it, and the cutlery I was given to eat it was a soup spoon and a fork. I assumed the apple was meant to be cooked enough to eat with said fork, but since it was not, I asked for another desert. The peppermint chocolate cake my wife ordered was a lovely presentation, however, the cake itself was dry. We are not overly picky or critical diners, but the overall expectation of going to a Norman's restaurant whether at the Ritz Carlton or in Mt. Dora, FL, we expect a higher standard and the experience to go with it.
Went here for Christmas Eve lunch. Nice to see patrons dressed up - so unusual in Florida. Our waiter was great - attentive but not intrusive and he was very knowledgeable about wines. The service was a bit quick for a leisurely lunch, but the food was great. The only drawback I noted was that there were absolutely no Christmas decorations, which can add to a festive atmosphere.
The starters were the most Interesting menu items. Mixed reviews on the entrees from excellent to fair. The diner with the "fair dish" advised the server the dish was a bit bland and in need of seasoning.Other than providing salt and pepper...no remedy was offered. There were large parties when we dined....one that included a number of children. We were seated in the room near the front of the restaurant. Ask to sit in the room in the back. That was fairly quiet.
My friend and I enjoyed our lunch very much. Love the conch fritters. Our server, Mason, was attentive and helped us with our selection. We were celebrating my friend’s birthday and a special dessert complete with a birthday candle was brought to our table. That perfectly capped off our lunch! Plus the ambiance was incredible!
We have been to 1921 for dinner several times and special dates like birthdays and anniversaries. This was the first time for lunch. The food was every bit as good as at dinner time and the presentation beautiful. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. A must dining experience if you are in Mt Dora.
We had a fabulous dining experience. The creative menu is what attracted us. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious, our server was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating, the courses were timed perfectly, water glasses refilled, wine glasses refilled as requested without waiting. The only suggestion is a vegan entrée option would be nice.
Way over priced for the very small portions for dinner. English Language barrier with the server we had. Not a great experience. Left hungry and went to a near by pub to eat. I won't be back. If you want to try food, go at happy hour and eat at the bar to try it. Such a let down. I was so excited to try this location since I use to visit the tea room at this location. Asked for chairs with no arms and waiter said no when there were chairs upstairs without arms. I just don't think he understood English good enough.
