1855 La voile wine bar
1855’s wine list is comprised of more than 250 different varieties of French wine, not only from Bordeaux, but from all across France. Above and beyond including well-known classics on the list at 1855, we wanted to highlight some of the little known gems that can be discovered from boutique, small batch vineyards.
The 1855 Bar à Vin also features traditional French cuisine, served primarily in the form of delicious small plates, thus presented in a more casual and shareable way than at a traditional restaurant. However, we also offer full course menus for those who want to stay for dinner.
Everything was great, we loved the wine flights and our food. We shared the cheese/meat duos, skirt steak, and sage risotto. It was a great date. The ambiance was really nice.
We love this place as a wine bar but I took friends to eat dinner here and the food was just OK. It was pretty disappointing. The staff is wonderful but the food is not as good as their neighbor (even though it’s the same chef)!
Outside table used. Very good food. Service slowed as evening got busier but not terribly. Good wine by glass options but only if you like French wines. Friday night so lots of street noise outside which may bother some
Compact but good menu with nice wine pairings. The space is small and a bit too bright. Good value. Took some out of town visitors who enjoyed it. Would go again.
Great refresh on La Voile. Finally, decent food a a reasonable price on Newbury. If it's a wine bar, however, they need to build out the wine list!
The menu was ok at best in terms of offerings. We ended up with the meats and cheeses which was a tiny plate. They were pre selected, not a fan of 2/3 cheeses and the meat slices were so thin (maybe 6 total) with a couple slices of pickle for $20. We tried 2 wines. Both super acidic, tasted old.
Recommendations to the owner is to bring more variety. If offering a charcuterie board for $20 it should be more plentiful for 2 people.
Fantastic food and wine list. The service is very good and attentive. Highly recommend it!
Amazing food with amazing view. Definitely a lovely gem in Newbury Street
Great wine. Food was so-so
Great place to have a date night after shopping on Newberry St. wine selection and menu.
Wanted to check out the new space and was pleased with each and every aspect of 1855. The beverage list is great and the small plates are both creative and tasty.
Very interesting menu, creative choices, something for almost everyone. Great setting, friendly staff, reasonable prices for Newberry Street. Kitchen was a bit slow, wait staff a bit distracted. Food was very good, flavorful, interesting combinations. A couple of minor issues, for example some bitter flavor in the lemon risotto. Overall a very good choice for a special occasion. When looking for French cuisine, we’ll definitely come back here again.
This is a neat place, had a flight of wine as I waited followed by a light dinner. The bartender was excellent, the vibe inviting... would recommend
Service very disorganized. Lots of errors. Food small portions, snapper bland.
We were quite happy with the food and the meal and the service. We were seated in the front of the restaurant, and it's pretty crowded, nearly seated shoulder to shoulder with the person at the next table and he certainly had no privacy in this conversation from my ear and vice versa. The steak and Endive were quite good.
Wonderful environment-- great for a date night or dinner with friends!
Great new wine bar. Small & intimate with lovely wines & a very good small menu. Would definitely recommend!
Another excellent dinner! Probably one of the best examples of Salade Niçoise I've ever had. Perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The seared sweetbread entrée also got two thumbs way up. Interesting wines to accompany the meals, too. Go!
Wonderful ! A superbe treat!
1855 is a great neighborhood place with good food, nice people, reasonable prices, and waiters who really care about wine. You can get apps and veggies to share or your own entree, which is nice in the age of small plates only. Decor is nothing special - just sort of old school Newbury street. But overall, this is a great little place for dinner or wine and snacks
The wine selection is wonderful. The menu has a great combination of somewhat traditional bistro fare along with creative interpretations. Really good. The space is also fantastic. A great choice especially if you want to share food.
This is a charming restaurant. As others have said, you feel as though you are walking into a little bistro in France. The ambiance is helped by the fact that there seems to be an international clientele who frequent the Newbury Guest House next door--the evening we were there, we heard French, Spanish and Italian being spoken.
Try the Sommelier's choice flight of wine for $15--two of us did, and we weren't disappointed.
Some of the dishes are excellent: the beef risotto was delicious, as was the bone marrow appetizer ( not easy to find) and the goat cheese in parchment that accompanied the mixed salad was superb. Bread was warm. My only criticism was that the apple tart with calvados flambé was not flaming and it was cold in the middle. Other than that, be sure to visit this little gem.
I love this spot -- it is so French down to the staff who are all from France and the mural of Marseille. A great place to practice your French! The food and service were excellent. I especially appreciated their serving us quickly as we needed to leave promptly for the theatre.
Sooo good. Definitely recommend
Wines and food were spectacular and the ambiance was like being transported to a French wine bar in Europe
So happy to have 1855! We are big La Voile fans- it is our repeat restaurant- and loving the new menu at 1855!! Exceptional concept. My new home away from home and I don’t have to go to France for this atmosphere. Shared 4 starters and 4 desserts and 12 different wines by the glass. Exceptional wine list.
Lots of work to do here. Awkward menu situation to start ... this means you need to keep asking for a large unwieldy binder just to get a look at wine. This can only be looked at by one person unless you both want it wine list and a menu. Wines by the glass should be available with the menu. Food was fine, but not at the level that they operate at.
Amazing food and wine selection
Stopped in for the first time on Tues, which was a very cold night. Jerome greeted me and immediately offered to take care of my coat and bag, then ushered me into the neat dining space. My dinner partner arrived a few minute after that and was treated with the same care. The room had only a few occupied tables and a few folks at the bar this chilly evening. The 1855 chicken and foie gras ballotine appetizer was excellent, as were the beef and mushroom risotto and beef flank steak dinners. The list of bottled wines was extensive with several excellent options in our price range. Jerome decanted our wine, which opened up nicely for the meal. We were never rushed, and conversation drifted back and forth between English and French. Overall, a perfectly lovely evening. We have already booked our next visit.
1855 wine bar follows the quality of La Voile. Amazing food with a very professional service and a great selection of wines by the glass. A real French wine bar, I will go back again soon!
I love this place. Casual with great food and service at a reasonable price. It can be a little noisy and tables are French bistro close but this will be a go to place for us
Food and service were spot on. The staff is extremely attentive and the food came out hot and delicious!
The waitstaff were attentive and professional, noticing when your water or wine was low. The food was wonderful- not huge portions but plenty to eat. Very helpful with the wine choices. Bread was delicious!
Fabulous place! Great wine selection and sommelier Alex is great! Knowledgeable, super friendly and a welcoming ambiance
