18 Central is exactly the kind of eatery that should thrive on the midcoast: it’s unpretentious and focuses on core ingredients beloved by most.
Reminiscent of old-school Boston steakhouses, with its dark wood and high ceiling, 18 Central is the perfect home for Chef Duffy’s cuisine. At the far end of the long bar, the fires of an open kitchen flicker.
The raw bar offers a daily selection of pristine oysters from Maine and elsewhere, served with a choice of mignonettes, a multi-dimensional scallion-ginger that benefits from a nip of fish sauce and cilantro. The wood-grilled-tomato cocktail sauce, with its deep, rich flavor and lingering burn, will most likely prompt a second order of the plump cocktail shrimp.
An impressive wine list that emphasizes refreshing, high-acid wines that make good companions to rich food. Bottles to complement selections from the raw bar include classics like Muscadet, Picpoul de Pinet, and Bordeaux Blanc, as well as modern wines

Baked oysters, mussels, salmon appetizer special, and the cassoulet special were all absolutely marvelous!

I had avoided going here for awhile because the noise level was just a little too much at a previous visit. Previous visits were sometimes unpleasant with exuberant fellow diners but also music that was far too loud. As a result everyone had to yell to be heard above the din of the cool-kid music. This was a big distraction from the great food. This time we had a table in the back so it was much quieter and this allowed us to have a conversation and enjoy the great food, which was unique and imaginative and delicious. Our server was really great. I would go again! This also left us in great spirits to walk down the street to a fabulous concert at Union Hall. 18 Central was the first part of a great evening.

18 Central is my go to for a special night out. The winter half price raw bar on Monday and Thursday are an added plus. The food is consistently excellent with a variety of special offerings. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive. Simply fine in my book!

My husband and I were excited to try this place. Quaint town, good vibes. Owner explained a misunderstanding between us and our server John, whom we like very much. He asked that we Ofer everything at once for the chefs. I wasn’t sure how much I was going to eat. During the busy season it is best to order everything at the same time. We were not in a hurry. Food was excellent! Oyster bar and BBQ chicken. Yummy! Looks like the locals love it here!
