I proposed to my girlfriend at the Hotel Del Coronado, and the whole place was perfect for the event. Dinner at 1500 Ocean afterward was perfect as well. The host and server were very helpful and helped make the occasion feel special. The food was great as well.
We chose the perfect place for our fist meal in Coronado. Starting with a beet soup chaser, a filet cooked to perfection with mashed potatoes winter vegetables and truffles slices, presented as (what we thought) looked like a little village, to the chef created (to-die-fit) chocolate sorbet. The presentation and service was as exceptional as the food, accompanied by watching the ice skaters Skating by the Sea.
We were guests at the hotel and made a reservation for my husbands birthday. Overall, the restaraunts at the hotel are mobbed by people who are not staying at the hotel so it was difficult to find a peaceful meal to enjoy. We requested outdoor dining in our reservation and had to wait while they seated people. The outdoor dining was under a roof with plastic surrounding it. When we asked to sit outside by the firepits, they told us to find our own table and then dismissed us. No acknowledgment of a special celebration and no special considerations for being guests at the hotel. Our waiter was very good and freindly. Food ok but overpriced. wouldnt mind paying the price if it were delicious.
Hubby and I went to 1500 Ocean to celebrate our 20th anniversary. From the minute we entered the door, the staff bent over backwards to make sure that we had a truly magnificent experience. They even went through and made sure that my food allergies were taken into consideration in a way that made sure I didn’t feel like a complete freak of nature (which I am) or leave the table hungry. I can’t find words for just how DELICIOUS the food was! All in all, a great evening that will be remembered for years to come!
Most amazing food and wine; Chef Pieter is an artist! The ambiance is lovely, and our waiter Mark is the most incredible guy!! He alone is worth coming to this restaurant!!! Mark has been our waiter on a few occasions and he's made it extra special for us every time!!
The wait staff was outstanding, so kudos to them. The ambiance was not as nice as I expected. At the table next to us was a family with noisy kids. The parents were acting appropriately (quieting them) but the ten year old boy was, well, acting like a ten year old boy. Then there was a guy across from us that I swear did not stop talking (LOUDLY) the entire 2 hours we were there. He apparently thought he was very funny. Even when eating he was talking loudly. I think his obnoxiousness influenced our feeling about the place. If we had happened to be sitting elsewhere it might have been much better. The noise options above do not give an option for "unacceptable" or I would have clicked that. The food was ok. We did not find the food remarkable but it was fine.
Very high class, with excellent service. Rather limited menu,with only about four items in each class. Very expensive, dinner for two, using their "tasting menu" of three selections came to over $200 for two people. I doubt that we would go back as we have now eaten the items that appealed to us.
Legendary setting although bit disappointed with beachfront over-development. Had been in past so clicked “on” my eager-to-be-here face, was looking forward to high-quality meal, setting, service: 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! Nice setting despite prior caveat and service ~borderline~ pretentious but attentive and prompt. Meal? Even setting/service couldn’t make up for overpriced underwhelming experience. Thought about tasting but not huge desert fan so did a la carte. Wines by glass overpriced. Viognier originally thought of was $25 but nothing of note so had pinot grigio $19. ½ dz oysters to start; had planned on seafood small plate but expectations already a bit deflated decided to nix although mentioned I might go “backwards” and order later. Decided on RACK OF LAMB with potato mille feuille, maitake mushrooms, rudy radishes, rosemary-garlic jus. Tried a Cali zinfandel ($18)~eh~ But biggest ~eh~ by far was lamb: not a rack but 3 small lonely looking “lollipops”. And wasn’t, you know, where they say they’ll carve the rack for you? Just 3 lollipop “chops”. Accompaniment not as described, pathetic: 1 small carrot and 1 pearl onion (I think it was an onion; both not in description), no radishes, no mushrooms, and potato mille feuille- thousand leaf? More like “trois feuille” 3 leaf. Literally. The biggest about size of a quarter no foolin’. “jus” not notable. “All This” for $44! I ate; I was already into “lets get this over with” mindset. As server removed plate I did comment menu was misleading and that chef should be ashamed passing measly dish off as fine dining. He was patient, asked if I had had enough to eat and I said just the check please but please make my comments known. He returned with gesture of port wine and chocolate desert; recall I’m not a desert fan but I accepted, making sure to comment they could have taken the $44 off the bill but…they didn’t. OK, server professional, nice…I paid, left >20% tip. The end. As in never again for a meal at 1500 Ocean :(
The food was very good and presented beautifully. I had an octopus appetizer that was phenomenal. In fact, the appetizers we ordered were the best part of the meal. The wine list is extensive and I think anyone would be able to find something they liked.
The service was not quite as good as I would have expected at this price point. The waiters were a little inattentive and I got the feeling from ours, that no matter what we ordered that it was his favorite.
The atmosphere in the patio area was claustrophobic and we were sealed in a very dark corner, we used our cell phones to read the menu! When we asked to be moved thru brought us another candle. The restaurant was not fully occupied.
It is our opinion that 1500 Ocean doesn't live up to it's hype.
Everything about my experience was excellent. I went with my girlfriend for her birthday and everyone from the hostess to our waiter Mark wished her a happy birthday and even had a signed postcard for her. The food was A+ , service was amazing and the waterfront view of the sunset was magical.
We were staying with several family members at The Del for a special occasion and decided to try 1500 Ocean. We ate inside, next to the open door to the patio / outdoor seating area. The outdoor lighting and view of the ocean at sunset were beautiful. Fantastic service from our waiter Mark. He was very knowledgable about the menu items and wine selections, and took time to make us feel special. We had the "3 course dinner" for $70.00 per person. The food was delicious, small French style portions of each course. My husband and I were treated to a complimentary glass of Champagne for our anniversary at the end of the meal, which was very special.
We had poor service, food came cold and sub par. Ordered the halibut that arrived cold and not cooked well. Seemed like it was sitting out for a long time before arriving to my table. My husband ordered scallops that came cold and nit crisp on top as they should be. Best thing was the dessert. $200+ meal left us hungry.
The location and quality of food was excellent, service very good, I had the beef filet and was disappointed that the garlic mashed potatoes I was looking for was a teaspoon of potatoes, quality was great, quantity for a 52.00 entree was terrible. Two little carrots, the dab of potatoes, a small turnip slice. I would recommend to someone for location, but I won’t go back. It’s one thing to have presentation, and high prices, if you get enough to fill you up
Great experience in a classic setting. The value is fair due to small portions of the food. 1500 provides a 3 course meal experience. Each course tasted fantastic and was well presented. But for the $70 price, portions were small. Service was great, although it took a while for our server to show up.
I never miss coming to 1500 Ocean when in SD. The food continues to be very good with the most beautiful view one could ask for. Unfortunately things here, especially the service have slipped. This is our second visit in 9 months and in both cases the service was terrible!
My husband and I came for dinner. We were outside during a beautiful San Diego evening. The food was amazing. My husband is a vegetarian and had a beautiful plate of vegetables. He said they were the best vegetables he had ever had. The beet salad with beet ice cream and goat cheese was so interesting, innovative, surprising. I did not think I was a fan of beets but that salad was top notch. I had the steak, can't go wrong and the dessert a ten. We are looking forward to coming back again.
Too expensive and just average food. I have dined in upscale Paris restaurants and they were no where nearly as expensive as this. And I don't understand the rationale for the inflated prices. The food wasn't that great to warrant the price.
If you want to say you have been there, tour the hotel and go somewhere else to eat.
The best brunch I've ever had! And I've travelled the world and had some pretty amazing brunch experiences but this place far surpassed my expectations! From the fresh seafood bar (oysters, shrimp cocktail, king crab legs, stone crab) to a huge wok pan of paella and sushi bar! This place is incredible with not only their selection but the quality and replenishment of that selection. For the sweet tooth in me~ their fresh waffles, chocolate covered strawberries and donuts bar were... how do I say this without drooling... ahhmazing!!! Thank you for the wonderful service and overall great experience ~ this was our anniversary weekend and we might have to make this a tradition each year ;)
The service and view were perfect. On the upside,my husband was happy with the Cesar salad, the calamari was disappointing..know it is hard to cook but it was rubbery ( our waiter very nicely offered to have chef do a redo which we declined so he took it off our check. ) The duck entree was good and my husband felt his filet was one of the most tender steaks he had ever had ( and he has had a few!). The wine list is impressive and I had a glass of one of the best Pinot noir. Overall not a bad evening but not what I expected from 1500 Ocean and not likely to return
