1500 OCEAN at the Hotel Del Coronado Ratings and Reviews
Although the location of 1500 Ocean is beautiful the food and cocktails were poor. The prices were waaaay over priced for what we received. My husband and I have been all over the country and have dined at some of the most expensive restaurants and they have all lived up to the expectation. 1500 Ocean did not in our opinion. The portions were minuscule and the prices large. Had the flavors been “out of this world” then we could have accepted the high prices. However, the food was simply just so-so. Weird! We thought we’d have a true dining experience but it was a major fail. We each had 2 cocktails that were also just okay. It’s a shame! Staying at the Hotel Del Coronado and dining at their famous restaurant goes down as one of our least favorite weekend getaways. Good luck!
Wonderful food, superb service, and a great location!! We really enjoyed the mix of flavors and textures in each of our meals - the grilled octopus was a particular standout. Even though the evening was cool, there was enough warming torches to keep things comfortable on the outside patio, and dining with the sounds of the pacific in the background was spectacular. While expensive, the meal and experience was definitely worth it.
1500 Ocean is perhaps San Diego’s only Michelin star quality restaurant. The food, wine, service, and surroundings were all noteworthy. We enjoyed the five course tasting menu and found every selection to be well prepared and beautifully presented. The beet salad (including wonderful beet ice cream), the octopus, and lamb courses were particularly well conceived and executed. The wine list featured a large selection of familiar wines at very reasonable prices. Services was good, though perhaps not quite as personable and interactive as might be expected for a restaurant of this quality. 1500 Ocean is definitely worthy of a return visit.
The worst Valentine day in 50 years. 125.00 per person priced fixed. Really bad selections. During dinner 33 Navy Helicopters flew over head. The worst. And I mean worst 550.00 wine food and tip ever spent . Seriously, Lobster carpacio with chunks bigger than a soup spoon? Great bottle of wine though. Other than that. Run, run Forest run.
We arrived fifteen minutes before our reservation time, and the place was deserted. A janitor said come back at 5:30( our reservation time). Waiter was Leo. Described the pricing of the restaurant week procedure vs. the full menu, but didn’t describe any of the dishes. Portions were micro-small. Taste was fair. Value was poor.
A true culinary dining experience. The dishes are intricate, complex and sublime. Taste, texture and the visual is exciting and did not fail this educated palate. And the service was extraordinary. Mark took care of us with great expertise. Made this birthday a lovely experience.
We had a party of 6 and they put us the front entrance. They sat us outside and it was very cold and drafty. There were no heaters above our table so we all kept our coats and jackets on throughout the entire meals. Overpriced for atmosphere, however, the food was well prepared. 1500 needs to up their game to charge their high price.s
The service was a little slow at first on Christmas day at 7:15 pm. Otherwise, the food (lobster bisque, scallops, sea bass) was excellent. Raucous laughter at one table was far enough from us not to be distracting. In particular, I appreciate the serving sizes, not too big, not too small, just right. If I may say so, the experience of the waiters these days does not match the excellence of years past. Maybe it's just me getting old, I don't know.
Made reservations for Christmas dinner and unfortunately was not impressed. Our waitress, Amy, was kind and helpful. The food was not as spectacular as we hoped for $110/person (not including alcohol). The lobster bisque was VERY fishy. The waitress was kind enough to switch that course with the arugula salad which was good. The filet mignon was surprisingly dry. The salmon came smothered in a heavy sauce. All of the desserts were wonderful. In addition, our waitress, Amy, was kind enough to provide gluten-free options for my friend. Towards the end of the dinner — service for us and some other tables around us became very slow and it took a long time to get the check. I would not return to 1500 Ocean for a special occasion dinner simply because it’s not worth the price tag.
Wish I had checked bill before I checked out of hotel as I was charged for two coffees that were not ordered. So, please folks, always double check your bill before paying. My loss and thank goodness it was for only $10 for 2 coffees. Could have been worse!
Christmas Eve dinner at sunset at the Hotel Del Coronado is a wonderful experience. Hotel was crowded but everyone seemed in the holiday spirit. Food was wonderful, 4 course special menu that did not disappoint. Staff was efficient and not intrusive. Would recommend for special occasion.
I’ve been to Ocean 1500 three times, and each was different. Lamb chops are always amazing and perfectly cooked! This time the waiter was excellent - top notch, but the bussers spilled the chef taster, ceviche, all over my sweater and my Mother’s coat. It was horrible. Their movements were too quick and they didn’t even notice. It was like being in an elegant restaurant for the front end, and then having someone come wipe the crumbs into your lap, along with everything else. The chocolate desert was amazing - the apple tartin was mushy and about a 3. All came w ice cream melted, as they walked around looking for the table. That said - the waiter deserved a hefty tip. I hope he didn’t share with his help! Not sure if I will recommend again. It was supposed to be a beautiful, memorable, dinner - the first holiday after my father's death. Disappointed to say the least.
My husband and I have dinner at 1500 Ocean every year at Christmas time. We drive to the Hotel Del to see the tree, shop at some stores, then have dinner. This year we discovered a new menu with a chef that brings a French influence . We tried a couple of first courses, then for entrees had the Lacquered Northern Halibut and Day Boat Scallops. Both were excellent, with fabulous layers of flavor! The Orang-blossom tahitian squash mousse was incredible on the Halibut! We are already looking forward to next year!
We love coming to the Del and 1500 Ocean. The food is always outstanding and the setting is comfortable and elegant. On this visit the service was not as attentive as we are used to. I believe part of the problem was simply that our server had too many tables, some inside and some on the patio. I never saw him just standing around but my wine glass sat empty for a long time and we sat waiting for our dirty plates to be removed for a long time.
Excellent ambiance but average (and pricey) food at best. Steak was overcooked and we specifically asked for it not to be overcooked. Food presentation and flavor was good but not fantastic - and at these price levels the food should defintely be in the fantastic range. Service was just average - no salt on the table and not a lot of attention from our waitperson. Overall - underwhelming.
