1 South Restaurant Catering and Bar Ratings and Reviews
We made reservations for Valentine's Day, but when we got there, we were greeted by a sign stating that the restaurant was closed for "renovations." We were never notified. OpenTable apologized and gave me 200 points to make up for it, but the restaurant should have communicated the fact that they were closed to OpenTable.
My steak was pretty badly overdone, but if edible, I have a personal policy of never sending food back to the kitchen (I get nervous about how the food is treated once it gets back there) but other than that our waitress was very polite and the rest of the food tasted good. I did mention in the reservation and once we got there that we were celebrating a birthday for my boyfriend so I was hoping to be offered a little dessert with a candle or something for him (I'd be willing to pay of course) but that didn't happen.
This used to be a hot spot in the area but our New Year's Day brunch was disappointing. We arrived to a locked front door with no one in sight even though it was 40 minutes after the website indicated the restaurant had opened. Finally managed to get in and had to track down the one waiter who was busy doing everything as no one else was in sight. We waited several minutes for the waiter to return after providing us with lunch menus and finall went to search for him and was told brunch was not being served as it was a Monday. We tried to order drinks and were informed the bartender had not yet arrived so it might be awhile. Another long wait for drinks, for coffee, for everything. The food and service were underwhelming. Next time, I will choose to go elsewhere.
We were a family group of four eagerly awaiting this special Christmas Eve brunch courtesy of a good friend’s gift certificate. The overall experience turned out to be quite pleasant and the food good, not outstanding, but reasonably well prepared. Two disappointments stand out: (1) neither the Above website nor OpenTable made it clear that on this particular Sunday, Above opened at 11:30, not 11:00, thus the locked door and awkward wait when we arrived, and (2) a server was late arriving, leaving the bartender to valiantly fend for himself as server, busboy, host, coffeemaker, etc. He did great, but we felt dismayed and uncomfortable on his behalf.
The hostess was dismissive, and told us the restaurant was VERY busy, belied by the fact that 40% of the tables were open. The menu is huge, and there are a couple of cuisines attempted; IMO, the selection could be pared down somewhat. Our server was quite nice and helpful. The food was fine, but at the end of 2 hours, we had to rush through 1/3 of our entrée, box the rest, and pay on the run (had a show to attend). Again, the server told us the kitchen was extremely busy (seems like some key folks didn't show for work), hence the delay. My particular entrée was probably sitting in the salamander or warming area for easily 30 minutes, as the proteins were dried out.
Had great expectations, but we won't return-
We chose Above because of its great location near South Orange PAC where we were seeing a show, but would go back there just for dinner any time. The portions were generous and the food was delicious. (Between the four of us, we sampled many different offerings.)
We greatly appreciated our server, Eric, pushing the kitchen to get us fed and out in time for the show, as we had been running late.
There was also a very good singer performing in a very entertaining way that did not overwhelm diners' conversatiins.
I had an amazing 30th birthday experience at Above! I wanted a booth, but my party was very small....3 people including myself, but the ladies working that evening made it happen! I even hugged her because I was that happy about the accommodations. Thank you Above staff!
My date and I enjoyed our evening/date out at the Above Restaurant because the atmosphere was so lovely and romantic. Having a variety of music to listen to while we were dining definitely added to the ambiance of the evening. The food was very tasty, especially the rib eye steak which was very tender and plentiful, making it a very satisfying meal. We will certainly visit the Above Restaurant again and would recommend it to our friends as a good dining choice.
We had a birthday celebration for my mother and we decided to have our dinner in the outside dining area. They put several tables together for our party of six. They just served our appetizers when it started to rain a little and then it started to rain harder and our server was trying to convince us that he could put two large picnic umbrellas in the table holders and we would be protected from the rain. Everyone else was started to grab their plates and go inside and he expected us to stay outside and deal with the rain. As we were going inside he stated that he hoped that they could accommodate us with tables on the inside and as we were coming inside the restaurant wasn't even full. They did give us another seating area and we order our main course and that took way too much time to get to our table and I order a ribeye and ordered it medium well and everyone else got their meal and I had to wait another ten minutes for a piece of I don't know what that was dry and very well done. By the time they rectified my meal every everyone else was done.
I've been here on two other occasions and each time Above seems to be getting worse.
This will be the last time that I will be coming to this place!
We went there for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, which was probably their low time, since we were the only two there. Asked to sit outside.
Both of us ordered a glass of wine. It seemed to me that they gave a generous portion.
Now as to the food, my only complaint is that on the menu there were two different duck dishes. One with butternut squash, cranberries and spinach. The other with wild rice and french cut green beans. I requested the one with the wild rice, as I do not like squash. When my dish was brought out, it was the one with the squash. Informed our server of the mistake, she went back and was told they are no longer doing the one with the wild rice and beans. Since my wife dish, which a chicken dish was what she ordered, I did not want to ask for something else.
My wife and I both feel that when my order was placed, the chef or whoever was in charge, should have informed her and she could have come back to me, so I could have made another selection.
This was our first time there, and may or may not return
I enjoyed the food. New waitress who didn't know about cocktails. Finally was assisted by management. Our friend got dessert that could have used a spoon which he didn't get till he was almost done with his gelato. Entertainment began which was very good but a little loud.
Is always serviced and ambience is excellent. Food is not. The presentation of the food is superior, the quality of the food is poor. Sorry I have to give this report, but that is the reality. I was there two times this week and both times were disappointing. I continue to go to above because of the convenient location for some of my family And Friends
We were a party of 6 people and had a reservation.
Apparently there was an event taking place on the patio. It might have been a wedding.
We asked to be seated away from the noise and music as one member of our party wears hearing aids. They could not accomodate us so we left before ordering.
The food was fantastic. Loved our herbed chicken and everyone else loved their food. But the service was hands down the worst I have experienced in years. The waiter spoke so soft we couldn't hear him. He rarely checked on us. It took us ten minutes and repeated asks to get silverware. We weren't checked on often (maybe once all of a two hour dinner). We ran out of water and no one to refill it. Then to top it off an automatic 20% gratuity was added to our party of 5. Which was absolutely shocking considering the horrible service. This was our first time dining there as we just moved to the area. Not sure we will go back, despite the food quality. It's hard to enjoy good food if you have no utensils. Or no drinks. Then get stuck with 20% gratuity.
In fairness to Above, the food here could be fabulous, but we didn't even get that far. We walked out after placing our drink orders because we found the management incredibly rude. The hostess seated the two of us at a six-top, prompting the manager to yell at her and others on his staff right in front of us. He appeared to be mad that she had seated us at such a large table. When we offered to move and told a staff member that we were upset by the manager's rude gestures, the arguing only escalated, so we got up and left. No one even tried to persuade us to stay.
