Food ok, but it took 75 minutes to get served and there were few people in the restaurant for lunch.
If you are going to be open, you really should have enough staff.
Server was nice.
Will not return
Great service. Good food. You have to try the pizza. It’s different but very good.
Service was very slow, even though there were only a few tables with guests. Appetizer plates remained on the table throughout the meal and were still there when the check was brought. Food was nice and hot. Some of the food was very good; some was just ok.
They wouldn’t honor my Open Table dining reward of $10!
Food was very good & affordable!
Little pricey for the food prices should be around 19 -21 for the selection
This restaurant is an excellent place for to dine for any occasion, whether it is formal or casual. The food is outstanding and brings a unique, new flavor to South Orange. The food, drink, and service are all fantastic, and I cannot wait to go back!
There seemed to be a little delay or confusion at the check in. But the food was great and so was the service.
Nothing special. Food was good but unimpressive. No need to go back
Great place in a great location near subways! Food was awesome! Friendly staff and super super great music!!!! I will be back again!
Our server was amazing, the food was divine. Definitely will have this as a me time place.
Enjoy the location to SOPAC, friendly staff. Good menu.
We wanted to try 1 South since we had not been here since the location was Above. I made a reservation on OpenTable and we arrived at 6:30 on Saturday evening. Surprisingly, there were only patrons at one table-in a spacious, multi-room restaurant and NO hostess at the hostess station. We waited about 5 minutes then just seated ourselves at the bar. There were only 2 other patrons. We shared baked wings and octopus for appetizers; both were good. Then we shared a burger which was nicely done. The bartender and waiter were both attentive and pleasant. It was a shame that the outside patio is indicated as a "smoking patio" because we would have loved to sit out there on such a lovely night.
We probably will return and give it another try but let's hope business picks up.
Horrible horrible service. We left after it took forever to get our drinks.
We went very early to get out in time for a 7pm event. There was only one other table occupied. Our server was very nice and brought our drinks immediately. We mentioned that we had a time situation and she took our order and brought out our food promptly. The kale salad and Shepard salad were huge, fresh, and delicious, as were the roasted beets. The branzino was cooked to perfection with crispy skin and tender flesh, served with fingerling potatoes and some veggies and was really spectacular. I heard the chicken skewers was good as well as the chicken parmigiana. My scotch was mammoth and so no complaints there!
Will definitely go back. The food is terrific....hopefully the service will be as good if we go during crunch time.....
This was my first visit however, I look forward to coming back for other events especially with friends, excellent for all events as far as I can see at this time.
The food was good except for the mussels. The service was awful. The manger did take some money off the check to compensate. I will give it another chance.
This was our first visit to 1 South. The decor is wonderful and it's a very large and roomy space. I had
Ratatouille Stew and it was very, very good. Only complaint was that the service was unprofessional.
This visit was disappointing, especially since the first visit we had after they opened was extremely positive. We were there on a Monday night so it felt like we had the undertrained teenagers serving us. The food was overpriced for the ambiance and service provided.
I made a reservation and when we arrived we waited ten minutes before anyone noticed us. We asked to be seated outside so they sat us in the smoking bar without asking if smoking area was okay for us. Since it wasn't, after being harassed for the first 5 minutes, after 10 minute of waiting I asked to move to the back. The back patio still has logos from the previous restaurant and the server back there was the teenager who was not at all interested in serving us or helping us to have a great meal.
This new project is not up to the high standards set by the previous restaurant in the same location. Ambiance was good in the dining areas away from the bar; very loud and uncomfortable in the bar section. Service was very attentive but also very slow for a moderate-size crowd. The food was the major problem: good ideas but poorly carried out. With a relatively small menu, fried calamari were not crispy; mushroom dumplings were bland and sticking together in clumps; pizza was tasteless. The food quality may not be a major concern for patrons primarily interested in the bar scene (it does have a bar-bites section in the menu); however, this is not a place for high quality dining.
Restaurant had no bacon for cheeseburger. The cheeseburger was mediocre. When asked if they had bernaise sauce for steak, the only sauce available was "A-1". At this price-point I expect better.
This may have been one of the overall worst meals I have ever had in a restaurant. The food took one hour to be served—including very simple items off the kids menus. And when it was served, it was almost inedible. We were constantly ignored when inquiring about the meal and were just told “the kitchen is backed up.” They tried to compensate by reducing our check and giving us a gift certificate for another meal, but I am not sure we will ever consider stepping foot inside the restaurant again.
Worst experience in dining we had in a long time. We had to ask for a staff member to take our drink order, then waited a long time to take our orders......but when it came to dessert, we ordered and had to wait at least 20 minutes for it to come to the table, and it was unbelievable how it was presented and made. I ordered a Chocolate lava cake which came in a tin foil plate with some vanilla ice cream on top. For the price of it and all the other items on the menu this was just shocking!
Beautiful restaurant. Food was very good. Was not very busy not sure why. The 4 of us really liked our food and wine. It was raining or we would have sat outside.
My daughter, girlfriend and I had an early dinner on the huge patio. The food and drink were wonderful and very delicious. I am stingy with my stars on service for the long intervals of not seeing our waiter (who was otherwise great, super knowledgeable and friendly) and for value for overall cost of meal, and resulting 20% tip for our server. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. We'll give it another try and hope the pace of service was an anomaly - everything else was spot on.
It would seem that the staff was very young and very new, inexperienced. Took a long time for the drinks to come out one of them was wrong and four Maker's Mark cost $52. One of our entrees came out much earlier than the other and although the food was tasty I thought it was very pricey for the portion received.
The server John was excellent, the setting was beautifully done. We will return. Price of a vodka cosmo was too high $16. Normally $12 or 13.
Great atmosphere. Great service. The food was fresh. I look forward to returning. I would recommend this restaurant for dates, friends gathering.
The service was incredibly slow. The food was expensive for what we got. We asked for regular water and she brought flat water in bottles that we had to pay for. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Spent mother’s Day here. Great staff and service. Delicious food and cocktails. Lots of room, very comfortable and beautiful space. Will definitely be back again.
Wasn’t sure what to expect since the last time I was there. Wow !!!!!!!!!!!
This is a total turn around. Service , food , and ambiance are as good as it gets. I’m ready to go back and try the entire menu. Spoke with Anthony the manager and he was very hospitable and kind to help my mother with her special requests. South Orange maybe be the next best restaurant town in north jersey.
Beef was dry. Nothing came at the same time. Bill was incorrect and then they added an outrageous service charge rather than giving us the option to tip.
Not a great mothers day...
Food was delicious, prompt and attentive service. Also learned that they will have an open-air cigar smoking section and I can't wait for the chance of smoking a good cigar, and drinking a good Scotch after a great meal there..
Came here from out of town with my family. Had a great time. Ambiance was lively as was the wait staff. Manager Nick was very attentive. Food was fresh and proportionally appropriate. Next time I'm in town I will definitely make my reservation.
Menu is very limited - it was hard to decide what to get.
Great food, great atmosphere 10/10 would recommend! Have already been back multiple times!
Terrible menu, slow staff, mediocre food.
I had read the mediocre reviews and complaints about service but decided to give this reboot a try. Went on a Friday night at 8, was greeted by a friendly hostess, and was seated right away, with a choice of spots. The service was impeccable! Our waiter was able to answer our questions and we had our food in lightning speed. Water glasses were never more than half empty before the super nice busboy stopped by. And the food was amazing! I would say the decor deserves an update, but I can look past that with the awesome service and great food.
We live in South Orange and really were hoping that 1 South was a superior dining experience to its predecessor, Above. They have evolved the menu to highlight Mediterranean style food which on balance seems to work. The problem is that they haven't corrected the service issues that plagued them before. The server was not up to par, the manager was clueless and the food took way too long between courses. They ran out of 3 desserts and it took them 15 minutes to run a credit card. They simply don't realize that they operate in a highly competitive restaurant market, the pricing was high and thus they need to deliver an equivalent experience. It does not stand up to other new Mediterranean Essex County restaurants like Zeugma in Montclair or Mezza in Livingston. With that said, the ambience is cool. They have a nice bar area and while it rained the night we were there, they have a very nice covered porch area. Happy to talk to the owner (which has some overlap with Above) to provide some more specific feeback - we want more great restaurants in South Orange!
If I could give this restaurant no stars I would. We had a reservation on a Thursday night and they gave our table to people who were walk-ins an hour before our reservation hoping that they would be done by the time we came. Surprise-they were not and we had to wait a half an hour for our table despite having our reservation on a Thursday night! I ordered two different glasses of wine off of the menu and they were out at both of them. Finally-I just asked -what glasses of wine do you have available? Save yourself the trouble and don't go there!
