About R J Grunt's
The first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, Grunts still exudes the funky, devil-may-care lifestyle of the 70s in its style, décor, music, and menu. Happily for all of us, the best eating of that day continues to be some of the best today.
While there"s a huge menu that's as much fun to eat your way through as it is to read, many of Grunts' old favorites spark return visits. The burgers are arguably the best in town. The salad bar boasts more than 50 ingredients daily. Giant malts and milkshakes are hand scooped and come in a rainbow of favors. Oh! Don't forget the barbecued baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches!

R J Grunt's Ratings and Reviews
Overall great! The music and environment was fun. Ultimately we felt a little rushed and I️ was disappointed with the price of the salad bar... as most toppings didn’t have a label and were left unreplenished. I️t would have been fine for a Golden Corral, but not when you’re paying $15 dollars. Still will come back. Recommend.
Grunts is always great. Been going for years. Their thanksgiving on a bun is incredible. And their burgers and salad bar are always a hit. We had three generations at dinner and all were very happy. Love the music. Love the atmosphere. Valet parking makes it easy. One of our family faves.
This is a Chicago classic. However, the tables are so tight you better be prepared to get to know your neighbor. They have to zig zag the chairs just so they fit with the tables so close. The booths are a good option for two people but anymore those are really tight too. Salad bar is the best ever.
An old favorite for a good salad bar and burger, but WAY TOO CROWDED at 6 pm Sunday. There literally wasn't enough room to even sit at our table with all the tables jammed together in too-close proximity. Waiters continually bumping into you trying to get by. It was ridiculous! I've been coming here since 1971 and never encountered such a problem. Yes I'd recommend RJG but never during a rush hour. By 745 Sunday it was relatively empty.
My second visit to RJ Grunts (about 30 years after my first visit here) and I'd say little if anything has changed. Reasonably good bar food - I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and it was tasty. The accompanying fries were just okay. My friend liked her California Wrap sandwich; her house-made potato chips were a bit greasy. They claim people love their salad bar, but the thought of people all day long breathing and worst on the open air salad bar scares me. The decor is about as dated as you'd expect from a place that's been here for 40+ years. If you're going to the Lincoln Park Zoo, this is very close and a good choice for a quick lunch or dinner.
We walked over to RJ from Lincoln Park Zoo. Seating was very tightly packed. We became very friendly with the table next to us. It's a smallish place, but they jam in every body possible.
We all ordered burgers of one kind or another. It took a long time to just get four burgers. The burgers themselves were actually quite good. Large patties and good toppings. The French fries and chips were cold and under cooked. But frankly we were tired and hungry so we just pushed the fries and chips to the side and didn't eat them.
When done we tried to pay for a portion of the meal with a gift VISA card. The waitress explained she usually can't the cards to work. She agreed to try and later came back explaining she could use the entire value of the card. The system only allowed her to use a portion of the outstanding balance. Never experienced that before.
Bottom line if you're willing to put up with the crowded environment and iffy service it's OK in a pinch. And definitely not Disabled Access friendly. They didn't even allow child seats at the tables.
Sat at a booth that backed up to a "dish/glass" center for the staff. Had to ask the staff twice to be more quiet when restocking dish/glass ware, etc. I don't think the staff realized how the loud clanking of dishes/glasses was very annoying when eating and conversing with friends.
Otherwise, everything was great!
Lucked out and got a window booth. This is a Lincoln Park West institution. One of the best veggie burgers in Chicago. Had the fries for a 1.00 up charge. They were worth it. Small restaurant so glad for the open table reservation option. Found street parking nearby. Nice Sunday dining experience.
Just love R J Grunt's. They really make a quality cocktail, and the food--though by category "comfort" is very high quality and consistently excellent.
Carne asada was best we've had anywhere--cooked to order, seasoned well and generous portion. Veggie options too.
Friendly for families, and just a nice option for everyday dining that's far better than average.
