About R J Grunt's
The first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, Grunts still exudes the funky, devil-may-care lifestyle of the 70s in its style, décor, music, and menu. Happily for all of us, the best eating of that day continues to be some of the best today.
While there"s a huge menu that's as much fun to eat your way through as it is to read, many of Grunts' old favorites spark return visits. The burgers are arguably the best in town. The salad bar boasts more than 50 ingredients daily. Giant malts and milkshakes are hand scooped and come in a rainbow of favors. Oh! Don't forget the barbecued baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches!

R J Grunt's Ratings and Reviews
Well we did make reservations for 9 people at 1pm but when we got there they made us wait for 30 minutes. The table we were going to have the people at it were finished with their meals and paid for it too. They just sat there for 30 minutes doing nothing but talking. This shouldn't be when others made a reservation and are waiting.
It was my second time here and they dis not disappoint. Thr burgers are really 1/2 pound and filling. The turkey club comes with a lot of meat but could have more bacon. Our service was great and tho its tucked away on the side of the building, its def worth the confusion to find it. Go for lunch bc you wont need dinner
Pretty bad service from the host stand. Couldn’t find our reservation. Then kept talking over us while seating us when we kept saying we had 4 adults and 1 baby in a car seat and needed a table to accommodate that. Overall the place is small and univiting. They have some weird salad bar that nobody was using. Food was pretty mediocre. Definitely better burgers in Chicago.
I’ve been a frequent patron at RJ Gunts for several years, perhaps dining there once or every other month, mainly due to it’s proximity to Lincoln Park Zoo and it’s kid friendly atmosphere. I “used” to think it was an automatic choice for a pleasant dining experience, until this last visit. I made reservations for dinner, a special occasion due to relatives visiting from out of town. Unfortunately, it was a mistake. We ended up waiting 20 mins past our reservation time, waiting for a table, as numerous other walk in patrons were seated, apparently because of our parties size , five, one being an eleven year old. The manager apologized for the inconvenience, and did compensate us with several appetizers “on the house”, but wasn’t able to explain why we we’re immediately seated, having made a reservation several days prior that was confirmed by the staff, who called me the day before the visit. This was unacceptable, and a freebie didn’t make the experience more palatable. We were also seated awkwardly, in a booth, my son seated in a chair on the aisle directly near the front entrance where cold air from outside forced my relatives, both in there 60’s to put on their winter coats while dining. It was unfortunate, because our waitress, whom we’re familiar with from past visits was fantastic, as always and made for an awkward interaction since I wasn’t happy with her boss, the manager and her lack to promptly seat us in a location which was more suitable for my dining party. Due to this poor service, which ruined a visit with relatives, I’d hesitate to recommend Grunts or visit them in the future.
Overall great! The music and environment was fun. Ultimately we felt a little rushed and I️ was disappointed with the price of the salad bar... as most toppings didn’t have a label and were left unreplenished. I️t would have been fine for a Golden Corral, but not when you’re paying $15 dollars. Still will come back. Recommend.
Grunts is always great. Been going for years. Their thanksgiving on a bun is incredible. And their burgers and salad bar are always a hit. We had three generations at dinner and all were very happy. Love the music. Love the atmosphere. Valet parking makes it easy. One of our family faves.
This is a Chicago classic. However, the tables are so tight you better be prepared to get to know your neighbor. They have to zig zag the chairs just so they fit with the tables so close. The booths are a good option for two people but anymore those are really tight too. Salad bar is the best ever.
An old favorite for a good salad bar and burger, but WAY TOO CROWDED at 6 pm Sunday. There literally wasn't enough room to even sit at our table with all the tables jammed together in too-close proximity. Waiters continually bumping into you trying to get by. It was ridiculous! I've been coming here since 1971 and never encountered such a problem. Yes I'd recommend RJG but never during a rush hour. By 745 Sunday it was relatively empty.
My second visit to RJ Grunts (about 30 years after my first visit here) and I'd say little if anything has changed. Reasonably good bar food - I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and it was tasty. The accompanying fries were just okay. My friend liked her California Wrap sandwich; her house-made potato chips were a bit greasy. They claim people love their salad bar, but the thought of people all day long breathing and worst on the open air salad bar scares me. The decor is about as dated as you'd expect from a place that's been here for 40+ years. If you're going to the Lincoln Park Zoo, this is very close and a good choice for a quick lunch or dinner.
