Contemporary Asian

R&D is an urban casual restaurant in the heart of Toronto’s iconic Chinatown, headed by first-ever MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and his mentor, Michelin-starred restaurant owner Alvin Leung. The stylish interior reflects R&D's dualistic nature: open & abuzz with energy while preserving an intimate atmosphere.

At R&D, eastern dishes meet western style in the form of modern Chinese sharing plates, where classic ingredients are given a vanguard treatment.

The food here was great and so was the service. The staff was friendly and even gave us recommendations of what to do while we are visiting Toronto. I enjoyed the food very much and loved sitting at the Chef’s Row and watching the chefs at work.

We sat at the chefs rail because we love to watch prep cooks. Solid in the kitchen. Service attentive but the bar and server weren't always in sync, so we would be asked twice for orders. (Better than not being asked at all!) The open wire racks of prepped foods looked directly at us, and were an eyesore. The spring rolls, which came highly recommended, were uninteresting, but everything else, including refreshing and interesting cocktails, was lovely. Not sure we would return but enjoyed the outing.

Food and service were top notch. Probably the best pork dish (Iberico char siu) we've ever had. The R&D fried rice, and Char siu, housemade milk bun as well as the sticky toffee pudding dessert were all excellent.

Wanted to support Eric Chong, Canadian Asian winner of MasterChef Canada Season 1, so I came by for dinner on Sunday June 26 and ordered the following: HUSH & WONDER cocktail ** Liked it. Refreshing. Worth $15. Some other cocktails on the menu are priced $19. I usually don't want to spend more than $15 or $17 on a cocktail. ROASTED BEETS as the appie ** Liked it. Flavourful indeed. Will recommend it. @WOK_LOBSTER as a main ** Liked it, but won't get it again. Even though it is a delicious dish, I wouldn't spend $75 on it. I am happy to try it once since this dish originated from Eric Chong's iconic dish Lobster Chow Mein. WAGYU BEEF as another main ** American wagyu, not Japanese, so it is rather chewy and does not melt in your mouth like Japanese Wagyu. It is subjective to personal taste. I've been spoiled by various types of Japanese Wagyu in the past, so I'm not a huge fan of the American way. It is still a tasty dish - just not so much my type. Service was excellent. My server came from Vancouver like me. He also offered a couple of char siu baos on the house as we waited for our food to come. The char siu baos are unique and one of a kind, so I would recommend them for those who like regular char siu baos and want to give it a try.

R&D would be one of the best restaurant food I ate in Toronto. Taste, innovation and uniqueness all were present in food that was served. Server was very attentive to us and helped us choose the food which we devour like anything. At one point I was hoping the food doesn’t finish, Bcz it was so good that I didn’t wanted it to finish. Grandpa’s fun gao, French onion spring roll and lobster was the highlights. We went home happy and complete.

Amazing experience. We went for my wife's birthday and sat at the kitchen top. Let me just say we got the full experience. Seeing the grace and tempo of that kitchen was surreal. I would go back again in a heartbeat, just have to get a few more paycheques to make it a reality! Keep up the consistency and the Michelin star is yours R&D

Food is excellent. Service was okay - still leaning on QR codes (which makes it feel cheaper). For the price point of the restaurant, I would expect that they would clean up drops/crumbs on the table between servings, ensure water is full, and that we always had drinks on hand. Ambience could have been improved with some better music.

I lucked out and was able to reserve a table on short notice. Every dish was memorable. Chef Eric’s goal is clearly to make the best “fill in the blank” dish you have ever tasted. Dishes that are common but have a undeniable twist or flavor. And the beer was cold and refreshing. Will definitely be back for the Peking duck. We did not have the minimum 24 hour notice to preorder.

First of all, if you plan to have their “famous duck”, you need to make reservation and specific ask to reserve the duck 24 hours in advance. No uncommon for many Peking duck places. Secondly, this is an Asian Fusion, not authentic Chinese restaurant. Set your expectation accordingly. Thirdly, if you do not like meat served meridian rare or rare, you should look else where. Now let’s talk about food. The good: quality of the ingredient is high with price to match. We had torched hamachi. Two Al latte sized hamachi and sliced further to create four thin pieces served on the dressing. Good fish. Blend dressing. Next: wagu Beef: 12 oz flat iron cut. Very nicely seared but the meat is rare in the cut and very lean very tender and mild flavor. Sauce again is on the blend side for my taste. Iberico chau Siu: good flavor, nicely charred, and again, unlike authentic Chinese version, it is scooped medium rare to medium. Very tasty for me. Good balance between fatty and lean meat. So similar to “half fatty half lean” if you were to order from a traditional chinese BBQ restaurant. I did not get a chance to taste the duck, but we are sitting at the chef ‘s rail, so I get to see all the action in preparing the duck. The ducks ($100) are par roasted if that’s the right terminology. When it is ready to be served, it is heated up again in an oven, and seasoned with the sauce to darken the color and poured hot oil over the skins. So not the traditional BBQ method. The legs are cut off, skins cut out and breast meat separated from the body, sliced and re-arranged on the serving plate. Again, the meat is not fully cooked but to a medium rare to medium doneness. Because the hot oil was poured over, all the fat under the skin are melted. So it is leaner than the traditional Peking duck. However, most of the flavor is in the fat. So set your expectation corrected and give it a try if you are in the mode for some fusion cuisine.

Food was amazing our favourite was the lamb potstickers. Highly recommend sitting at the chefs bar for the full experience of dining at R&D. We dined early before a concert at 5pm, and had the place to ourselves for first half of our meal. The staff were very knowledgeable and attentive. They even made me an emotional damage with mezcal subbed in for the tequila it levelled up the spice, and gave it smoky flavour. I thought you got great value for the quality of food being served. When you first walk into the restaurant it’s little odd with the cake shop right at the front it takes away from the vibe of the restaurant, and it also took us a second to be sure we were in the right place. Would definitely visit again.

A lot of the non-dessert items felt like they were not quite there. I have nothing against fusion, but I don't think the fusion or novel approaches to the dishes outweighs the price + quality received. If the quality was higher for the price, it'd be good. If the quality was the same but the items slightly cheaper, that would also be fine. But a somewhat upscale dining experience shouldn't be disappointing in the quality aspect. That being said, the sticky toffee pudding was wonderful, it singlehandedly saved the meal from being a disappointment
