Among the ruins of ancient Greece were items such as clay pots that revealed many clues to daily Hellenic life. PYLOS (pronounced Pee-'los) - the root word that includes things of clay - celebrates these prosaic artifacts we now recognize as great art.
PYLOS honors traditional Greek cuisine by bringing fresh, wholesome cooking from all regions of Greece to the East Village.
What Insiders Are Saying
A great Greek restaurant with communal seating and a cozy vibe. Pylos got the seal of approval from our Greek friend, and he's a real snob when it comes to food from the homeland. Good enough for us.
We were a bit late for wife’s 60th birthday because Uber was late. On arrival we were told we could only have the table for an hour. Nicos however came to the rescue and made sure we had a wonderful evening. He made things happen. He was positive and accommodating. The food and wine were fantastic as was the service. This is the best Greek restaurant that we have gone to in New York.
My mom and I were very excited to try this place. We are Greek, come from the restaurant industry and wanted to try some “authentic” Greek food. Not only was it not really a Greek restaurant (more inspired by French and German cuisine) but incredibly rude to disabled people. My mom is unable to bend her knee in this big knee brace so had to prop her leg on the bench. The owner comes over and asked her to take her leg off the couch but she couldn’t move it. His response “I don’t want to get bedbugs on the couch”. Wow! Every single place we’ve eaten at, including fine dining have been so accommodating, but not this place. I’ve never been so insulted as a paying customer in a restaurant. He did not care or ask if we were comfortable. We wanted to walk out right then and should have. If you are looking for authentic Greek food or want a handicap friendly place, don’t choose this place. If you want a snobby owner who services bad food, this is your place.
First of, Our food is authentic Greek. Second of all, I never said "I don't want...", I politely told you that "we cannot have shoes on the couch" and I provided a napkin to avoid the bottom of the shoe touching the fabric of the couch. I do not see how more polite and accommodating someone can be, by respecting your Mom's disability as well as the other customers who will sit on the same couch that you sat on. Pylos Management
We had a reservation at 10pm and we got to sit at a table at 11pm. That is unacceptable.
Amazing food and experi
Fabulous food and excellent service. Lively but not too loud to talk.
We had to wait 1 hour for entrees. Reason given was it took a long time to cook the fish. Wished the server had told us the truth. Went back two nights later and service and food were excellent.
Terrific dinner. Wasn’t too loud. Very tasty fish. Excellent wine. Good service. Reasonable $$. Would go back
Very consistent quality. IMHO some of the best lamb chops in NYC.
Food was excellently prepared and served. Our server was excellent
This was our second visit. Pylos is a lovely gem in the East Village. The food and service were excellent.
Delicious, everything is wonderful and the service is good too.
Amazing moussaka. The grilled haloumi cheese appetizer was absolutely delicious.
What a wonderful meal. The whole fish we had was incredibly fresh and delicious and the lamb shank was as good as anything we had in Greece.
Service was excellent and probably because we had an early reservation the noise level was very low. The dishes that we saw on the plate of other diners looked excellent as well. It was an enjoyable evening and we will return.
We had to wait 20 minutes before getting our table, whereas we had a reservation. However the food was excellent and the service was great even if I like to keep my plate a little longer to finish it totally before it’s taken from me. Finally, note that prices on OpenTable are wrong.
This is a gem especially if you like fresh fish - I had sardines and salmon and loved both. Beautifully presented, too.
They got our entree orders wrong, (my steak was served well done instead of med-rare, and my wife was served a wrong entree) but promptly corrected them and even offered to give us some complimentary desserts. The servers seemed to work as a team, attending all tables together, rather than having certain sections of the restaurant assigned to them. I think the concept of this is fine, but in practice, they should communicate better and work more methodically, as it took them awhile to refill our drinks and 3 different servers asked us if we wanted to look at the dessert menu.
With all that being said, I enjoyed my dinner and probably will visit them again.
Excellent. The grape leaves in avgolemono sauce was heavenly. The fish was delicious and the moussaka was excellent - the pasticio less so. The wine from Santorini was beautiful with great balance of acidity a floral aromas.
The place is so cute, and the food is totally greek .”cheap option “ in comparation with other greeks in nyc. The problem is the table are too close literally you can have a conversation with the guys close to your table.
Favorite Greek food in the city. Lovely service and space.
Poor Service, waitress was surly & pushy, no liquor only wine & beer
I have been there several times with my friends and mostly were satisfied with food and service. However, my visit with my mom yesterday was full of disappointment. Food was over cooked and salty, and service wasn't friendly. The server was rude and inattentive. He seemed annoyed when I asked questions.
Lovely, lively restaurant in a buzzing area. Obviously very popular with locals. Food, atmosphere, service all spot on. Five stars overall from me and my guests.
I have been going to Pylos for almost nine years now. The food is as good as, if not better than, the very first time. You simply cannot have a bad meal here. This visit we had the dolmades, which I realized that I had never ordered before. The best I have ever tasted. We'll be back!
We travel to NYC every spring and in 2018 found this restaurant and looked forward to returning this year. After our experience we will probably never return. There was a table two down from us that was so noisy (they were literally screaming). We mentioned it to waiter and they chose to do nothing about it. We couldn’t wait to escape! When one group of people are ruining the experience for everyone else, they should be asked to leave. Unfortunately that was never done so you lost us and our recommendations to friends.
They have a limited cocktail menu. There grill octopus was horrible.
Excellent food and value. Service was average. Decor is great but tables are all jammed together. You are eating with the tables next to you.
Noise was unbearable.
Hostesses were rude and inexperienced. Not the best first impression for a restaurant.
Lovely waitress. Helped us make great menu decisions.
All good service, food, everything was first class
Based on reviews we were expecting a great meal with exceptional service. Instead we felt extremely rushed, food came out on top of each course. The service was curt and rushed. The noise level was way to high, but probably being seated on top of each other. We were disappointed, but felt that we might of hit them on an off night.
Only problem was that the baby lamb chops were overcooked.
The physical space was lovely and comfortable. My date and I shared several appetizers and the whole dorado with greens. Delicious and light fare. The service was very attentive and pleasant.
Everyone was helpful and kind. The food was superb! From the Greek salad to the charred octopus. Fresh and prepared expertly.
Great staff, great food, overall great experience.
Delicious! Whenever we visit NYC we try to eat here! We have good Greek food here in DC but nothing compares to Pylos!
Our go to Greek Restaurant on the Lower East Side. Fresh Tomato, cucumber and Feta to start along with a perfectly grilled octopus, delicately seasoned and complemented with the grilled Halumi appetizer. Never had anything else but the deliciously prepared medium rare Lamb chops, the soft branzino with or without the warm oil and lemon capered topping. Always order the boiled potatoes and sauteed greens. But never have room for dessert. Maybe next time! The ambiance is perfect for the first date, a family treat or a night out with your wife and some quiet time. WIne selection is terrific. Personally, I sometimes wish they had a full bar.
Very good food but the hostesses make you stand in the entranceway and hold the curtain closed so you can’t wait inside. The waitstafff is much friendlier though.
Excellent, fairly priced food and service, just a bit loud. Look forward to returning.
Great food and atmosphere, we had a very good time and it was hard to choose from the menu since everything looked so good!
will be back for sure,
great food, nice ambiance. the service is good, the prices are reasonable for quality food in new york. they have one of the best greek salads, lots of tomatoes and feta. lamb chops are exceptional. wine prices are also reasonable for new york.
