Pure Spirits Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I were fortunate enough to find Pure Spirits when it first opened and have been fans every since. We travel from over an hour away - north of Ajax - and it is always worth the drive!
**I especially appreciate the fresh oysters and seafood options, since I grew up on the coast of Oregon.
This was our first time dining here, and it was great. The food was top notch, and good value for the money. The servers were attentive, but not so much that they were disruptive. We were concerned we might be rushed, but it was a pleasant evening with a three course meal over two-half hours. The atmosphere was nice, and the noise level was low allowing for great conversation without hearing others.
The prices were very high for such small portions. Food was good but our server was not. She had lots of menu knowledge like buzz words but didn't understand how things were made. I specifically asked if what I was ordering had a sweet sauce and or sugary add ins. She said no, and the dish had a sweet sauce (which I avoided). It was good but definately not what I wanted. I said I would have another dish instead of it was sweet and she said no that I should get that one.
Would have preferred a booth, but we were told booths must requested on booking. Host said all booking request for booths must be honoured first. We had not, as nowhere on the website, does it mention that. In any case, to Open Table's credit, there is an option to enter special requests. I guess next time we will.
Server didn't tell us her name. Didn't check up on us as often. Didn't ask for any allergies and food restrictions. I asked for my burger with NO BACON. When I got my burger we had to wait 10 mins for our server to check up on us. I then told her it has bacon. Got my order re sent again another 15 mins later and the bun was still cold. Good food. Poor service.
The oysters were tasty and I had the surf n turf and it was excellent! It was exactly what I was hoping for. Unfortunately the lobster tail stuck to the shell because it was butter poached (needed to be blanched first to unattach) but the flavour was good so I didn’t mind digging it out. Our waiter kind of ignored us. My date got the chicken and it had this really spicy wafer thing in it that was insanely seasoned and spicy and gross and the cabbage was soggy apparently.
Our waitress, whose name I don’t remember but was also the bartender was very accommodating. Her recommendation of the Tokyo chowder was spot on. My wife also ordered the Niçoise salad with the chowder and later commented after trying the chowder that a Caesar salad would have been sufficient. Our waitress found out the the nicoise hadn’t been started and offered to substitute the Caesar, which we did. Very customer focused. A pleasant evening.
We ordered the eggplant and quinoa salad. There were 3 tiny pieces of eggplant in the salad.
The octopus app had 3 small pieces of octopus.
An $11 bowl of chowder priced at $11 was less than a cup.
Overall disappointing value and quality of food for the prices. Won't be returning. There are much better restaurants in The Distillery for the money.
Right from the moment I walked in I was coughed on...seated then forgotten. Food was alright, my wife's request her steak was not met; nevertheless we waited. Overall staff was very friendly but seemed preoccupied with closing up early on this night. And the chairs were very uncomfortable.
Our food was excellent and just the right portion size. 2 diners had special dietary needs - 1 vegetarian, and 1 gluten intolerant . Both were able to find appropriate items on the menu. The service was excellent, especially Ben who made our evening very enjoyable - he knew the menu offerings very well and was able to recommend selections to meet our needs and mood that evening. I would definitely return and recommend it to others.
We had an enjoyable lunch. I had the lamb burger. It was delicious. We also enjoyed the excellent service and not being rushed out the door. Several staff came to check on us, made us feel well looked after. We topped off our lunch sharing two lovely desserts - the mocha and the chocolate cake and a cup of tea.
Enjoyed a delicious lunch with a friend. We enjoyed appetizers of oysters and tempura calamari and mussels with fries for our main. Service was excellent and the food was outstanding. It's a great spot for seafood! Being in the Distillery District during the holidays, it made sense to cap off the experience at an excellent restaurant.
It was slammed with holiday goers this time but the restaurant worked valiantly to keep up. My guests truly enjoyed their lunches but my oysters Rockefeller, which I've had there before, we're disappointing. Will I go back? Absolutely. I expect to have that dish again, under more normal circumstances, and that it will be wonderful!
We had a lovely lunch at Pure Spirits-food was delicious and servers were friendly and efficient. Noise level was high however, it was during the Xmas Market time so understandable as many people were in the restaurant. We had a reservation and our table was waiting . Would definitely go to this restaurant again and many opptions available that were not seafood.
My husband and I have been to Pure Spirits several times and frequented the establishment yesterday for lunch. Everything was great. Owen, our server, was extremely pleasant and attentive. Between the two of us we had oysters rockefellow, tempura calamari, the Thai yellow curry mussels and fish and chips. Everything was excellent! Our eyes were a bit too big for our stomachs so we doggy bagged the leftovers to hold. We enjoy the setting, being in the Distillery District, both inside and when we have had the opportunity to sit on the patio during the summer. We will definitely be back!
Location and ambience was great. Food was good (mussels and fries). Unfortunately the service detracted from overall experience. We had a hard time getting our waitresses attention as she spent most of the evening with the same table full of men. Guess she was betting on a better tip from them.
Booked a reservation for a birthday dinner with my husband and daughter and it was during the Christmas Market. Great vibe and atmosphere with lots going on. Our server was friendly and efficient and overall I would say the service was excellent. Some of our food was very good and some was just fair. The raw oysters were great but they were out of Oysters Rockefeller. My husband order the tempura squid instead and was disappointed as some were rubbery and the batter was odd (pure white and did not look like regular tempura batter) The fries with parmesan were excellent to be shared. My daughter really enjoyed her Lobster Pappadelle and I had mussels in curry sauce. My sauce was OK and the mussels were fairly small. My husband ordered the fish dish and liked the borth which has a kick to it.
First time at this restaurant in the Distillery.
Had the 12 oysters for $35. They only had 3 different kinds left so options were limited but we still enjoyed the selection.
It was busy because of the Christmas market. Great restaurant and our waitress was wonderful. A bit loud but to be expected.
Will definitely return
Reliable, reasonably priced with excellent service and a decent range of offerings. But like nearly all Toronto restaurants a little too noisy. If the crowd's yakking anyway, who needs music? Only steps from the Soulpepper theatres, an advantage when the weather is awful.
