Pulehu, an Italian Grill Ratings and Reviews
We were staying at the Sheraton Kaanapali and wanted a change of pace for food. I looked on open table and saw this restaurant nearby, so we took a chance. So glad we did - we had a wonderful waitress, excellent food, and great location. I thoroughly enjoyed having a break from normal island food/fish, etc. highly recommend, but make a reservation.
We love Pulehu! It's a must on every visit. We especially like the Sunset Menu. Such a great price on fantastic food. Full size appetizer/salad, entree and dessert for $41. Everything was delicious! Both the caesar salad and the caprese were so fresh. The risotto crusted pesce is a favorite, and we love the sorbet! The service is terrific as well, and though it's not quite ocean front, there is a nice view of the Westin grounds out towards the ocean. Highly recommend!
Excellent food, great service. Large portions. We had the risotto seared fish which was the best I had on the whole trip. Our other dish was lasagna which was also great and lots of leftovers for the next day. Great wine list (Turley two thumbs up) and their tiramisu was big enough for 4. Loved it so much we scheduled another dinner later in the week!
We really enjoyed our experience at Pulehu! We were staying over at the Westin Nanea and got a reservation to go for the Sunset Dinner at 6pm, which is a fantastic value. We brought our 3 year old daughter - our waitress asked us immediately what order she could place to get her meal going, which was really fantastic. Thanks so much for a great time overall!
Service was excellent with prompt seating, great suggestions to consider, anniversary dessert on the house. Fixed Price specials were full portions and considerable value from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. Venue is a partial sunset garden view. White tablecloths with spotless floors. Highly recommend!
My last review was very optimistic about the new menu. My wife and I returned recently for different dishes, and results were a tad different. The burrata and tomatoes were still great, but they both came minutes after we placed our order and several minutes before our cocktails arrived. This is a mgmt issue that should be easily fixable. We ordered steak this time, and got a very nice sized serving along with mashed potatoes, which were good. The steak, however, left much to be desired, as it was tasty, but very chewy. I also asked for garlic butter on my steak, and was told they have truffle butter, which sounded good. It was indeed good, but came at the cost of $16 for a slice. Since this extra cost was only discovered at the bill time, that waitress was nice enough to take it off the bill. The wine list has many nice reds, and service-still good, but this meal did not please us nearly as much as the prior one, which yielded a somewhat glowing review. We are here for two more weeks, so will visit again, and report back. Still much better than in prior years, and $41 price fixe after eight is attractive for local diners.
We had the tasting menu. $125 per person. The manager was flexible on wine choices if there was a wine we’d already had or a varietal we did not like. All were unique and delicious. The courses were all great, with 2 choices for each course. Menu is also very good for those wanting to skip the tasting menu. View and atmosphere were also great. We’d definitely be back.
This Italian restaurant in a busy resort should be so much better. Lobster risotto was just so-so and the risotto was over cooked and not hot. Handmade lasagna should melt in your mouth and cut with a fork not a sawing motion! Very sterile, plasticy atmosphere. Skip this!
I have been coming here for yrs on various Maui trips, and am always slightly to heavily disappointed. This meal was a major step up from prior years in many ways.
The burrata app was excellent, surrounded by juicy and tasty local tomatoes, the best I have ever had on this island. The monchong entree also excellent, and dessert as well. Wine list has expanded considerably since my last visit, and prices relatively palatable. Better yet, they offer 1000 points on open table dining after 8, when there is also a discounted price fixed menu. Can’t wait to try other dishes , and hope they are as good!
As it's on our Timeshare property, we've been eating at Pulehu for many years. Quality / value ebbs and flows by year. Definitely a down year this year. Gone are the unique touches that made Pulehu special like the long breadstick appetizers and lovely salted dipping butters, replaced by the bog-standard slab of cold chewy bread and bowl of oil and balsamic.
Lasagna is back on the menu but the Mrs called it a "hot mess". Definitely not the recipe they used years ago. I had fettuccine alfredo with chicken and local veggies added. Noodles and sauce were great, as were the local veggies, but I made a bad call on the chicken. Pulehu chefs continue to struggle in properly cooking this "challenging" protein. Shoe leather has better flavor and tenderness than their yard-bird. Salads were excellent and fresh, however.
It's hard to recommend Pulehu, where dinner for two can easily run three figures for sub-Olive Garden fare, but there's no arguing it's convenient when you're fresh off the plane and haven't hit Safeway yet for the week's provisions.
We arrived for an 8pm reservation and were seated quickly. The service was very good. The food was nicely presented and fresh. My only complaint was over salting of the preparations. A review of the table guests elicited the same response. Overall, a good experience.
This is our new favorite in Maui. The menu isn't what I'd consider very traditional Italian, but it definitely has some dishes that are close enough. I saw a massive plate of lasagna (served in what looked like a skillet), there's Osso Buco, and of a variety of pastas. Being Maui, you've got seafood options. My friend had the risotto-encrusted fish that she absolutely adored. I had the Orichette, and the flavor was good, the prawns were pretty well-cooked (although a couple got mushy on the ends), and the sauce was much lighter than I'd anticipated. The Brussels Sprouts we started with to-die-for - flash fried so the leaves were crispy, with pancetta and soft goat cheese. The Chocolate Almond Olive Oil Cake was absolutely superb!!! (worth even more exclamation points)
Our server (David? Daniel?) was extremely friendly and helpful. He made the evening even nicer. The atmosphere is wonderful for a nice (and hopefully child-free) dinner, especially if you're lucky enough to be seated near the edge of the dining room at the Koi Pond. This would be a great choice for a special occasion or nice night out with friends to have good conversation.
We will absolutely be returning next year, and maybe before we leave this year!
