Pulehu, an Italian Grill Ratings and Reviews
We enjoied the evening in Pulehu very much. It was raining so we asked for the valet parking. We didn't have any problems and they didn't charge for the parking service.
We had the chance to get a wonderful table next to the pond with the Koi fishes. The service was exzellent, the meal very delicious. We started with the Pan fried Gnoechi Genovese, after we had the Bruschetta and as main dish the Risotto Crusted Pesce, I realy loved it!!
The dessert we shared, we had the Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was the only not so fantastic experiance, it was not like an Italien Tiramisu and the portion was much to big. But the evenig was realy exceptional, yes I would say it was the best Restaurant we have eaten during our vacation in Maui and you can believe we tried a lot.
The food was the best I can remember—and the night before we were at Merriman’s! We had the sunset pre-fix special, which is a smoking deal. The Caprese salad was not anything exciting, but the Monchong dinner was AMAZING, along with their butterscotch/Oreo cookie crumble dessert and their WONDERFUL bread. We rolled out of there, and without breaking the bank! We were celebrating my birthday, and the server made it very special for me.
One of us ordered the early bird special with the Caesar salad, risotto crusted opah, and salted carmel dessert. The other had the lamb chops. we shared the the Caesar salad which was wilted. The risotto crusted opah was excellent. My husband didn't care for the sauce on the lamb. The portion was quite large. the salted carmel dessert was shared and tasty. Since it was our anniversary we received complimentary glasses of champagne.
Food was very good but the service was very slow. I don’t know if it was the server or the kitchen. It also was very hard to find. This restaurant is the Westin resort but there are no signs on the outside or inside to tell you where it is. Also the ParkIng was bad. It was hard to find a space
We've dined at Pūlehu several times, but were disappointed this time. We ordered lamb chops medium and they came rare and needed to be re-done. They did comp us our calamari appetizer which was nice. The house special lasagna was OK. I was expecting home made pasta as the restaurant typically makes its own, but it tasted like typical box curly lasagna noodles and the Bolognese sauce contained large pieces of ground meet and no sign of Bescamel sauce. The atmosphere next to the Koi pond is nice, but fine dining it wasn't, this ime anyway.
Gnocchi starter was very good. Lasagna main course also very good. Risotto crusted local fish was tasty. Sorbetti for dessert was good. Ambiance was nice but not exceptional. Service was attentive. Overall, a good experience but perhaps not memorable enough to mandate a return visit on a future Maui trip. A solid choice if you are staying in the area but I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to find it unless you have a craving for something Italian.
Crazy all the times we've been to Westin Ocean Villas and never eaten at this restaurant, because I didn't want to eat Italian, I wanted seafood. Well, Pulehu bills itself as an Italian bistro, but wow, do they do a fantastic job with fresh local fish. I had monchong that was a perfect as it gets. Moist, tender, flaky, flavorful, everything you'd expect from a seafood restaurant.
But they're equally as good with Italian food. I'm part Italian and was taught to cook risotto by Italians, and I can tell you with confidence that the risotto here is the real deal. Creamy, tender, and a huge flavor explosion in your mouth. The budino (pudding) is amazing, too.
Service is wonderful, with a lovely woman who is hostess at the entrance.
The food was excellent & beautiful to look at. The best food I have ever had on Maui. Not only is it a lovely restaurant, we had Amy as our waitress. She was very professional & knowledgeable about the menu without being snooty! I would love to have her again as our waitress. We had the Eggplant Parmesan, crisply breaded, a yummy tomato sauce, the Risotto Crusted Pesce was cooked perfectly, melted in your mouth. The Orecchiette was to die for, wonderful flavors, the pasta was cooked perfect. The Tramisu was enough for the five of us. Beautiful flavors, not too sweet. We plan on eating here again before we leave the island.
This was our third time dining here and we were really looking forward to it on the last night of our vacation. The food was a total disappointment. Eggplant Parmesan wasn’t edible, fish was blah and pasta with shrimp just ok. My husband liked his ossco bucco and dessert was pretty good. May be taking this one off our our go to places. We are owners at the resort so we were doubly disappointed. Also, our server was very unfriendly and she basically scowled at us.
Italian dining on Maui? My wife and I smirked at all the advertisements at the Westin Ocean Resort Villas (where we were staying) for this restaurant. But due to bad weather we decided to eat here one night. Wow, were we wrong! My wife is part Italian and she was blown away by the food. The lobster risotto is the real deal. You must also try the Monchong. This is a fish you can't get any where else but Hawaii. And it was cooked to perfection. For a resort, the prices were pretty reasonable. We are so glad we decided to stay "home" for dinner!
Good food and service. We had the calamari and pizza for an appitizer. The calamari is cut in stripes instead of circles it was good! The pizza was ok a little soggy. Being from the NYC area I would skip the pizza next time. The lobster risotto and Catch of the day were delicious!!!
