Pulehu, an Italian Grill Ratings and Reviews
We have been to this restaurant a number of times and enjoyed our meals. Perhaps this night, was simply an issue of not ordering some of their best items. The white pizza was tasty but very salty. The eggplant was good, not great. The veggies with it were better than the eggplant. Well mixed drink, helpful server.
It seemed that hotel guest were getting seated ahead of us. When we finally got seated it seemed the server did not have time or interest in dealing with us. Fortunately the manager finally came over and serviced our table. They have great wine pricing we brought our own bottles however ended up buying a bottle off their wine list at what I thought was s great price
The food and service was good. It rare that you go to a restaurant and have it come out right away. Almost like they had it ready knowing what we wanted to order. We were out within an hour. We were there celebrating my birthday. It’s rare to leave a restaurant that early. I didn’t feel rushed. I thought the pace was good. It wasn’t packed or super busy. It had a nice flow.
Sometimes you try so hard but simply a few little things put you over the top. Great location, great chef, pool-side, romantic setting, friendly staff. Why wouldn’t you enhance the whole ambience of the restaurant with candles on each table top, and have place mats or tablecloths to grace the plain, boring, frosted-glass table surfaces? Lighting and table presentation is SO IMPORTANT.
Or is it?
Pulehau is a fantastic place to dinner. I visit Pulehau numerous times during my visit to Maui.
Matt, the bar keep, is friendly, vivacious and professional in the execution of his duties. Jim the manager keeps everything humming and has exceptional knowledge of Pulehau's Wines. All the waiters and excellent in caring for the patrons. I love this Place.
Overall very disappointing.
Service - We were informed by our waitress shortly after arriving that there was a large group was coming in and we should get our order in to avoid getting the kitchen getting bogged down. Since we had not even received our drinks, we ignored the warning. We never did see any large group nor did we experience any delays. It was pretty clear that our waitress just wanted to move us through as quickly as possible.
Food - Both entrees were heavily salted. One was a fresh fish and the other was lasagna.
Wine - We ordered wine by the glass and returned them as they were not drinkable. The wine had obviously been open for a considerable period and not kept in proper conditions. This is not what was expected from a restaurant that received Wine Spectator awards for its wine.
Ambience - There were several very young kids running around the restaurant throughout our meal. No one from management seemed to be concerned about this. While we understand this is a resort restaurant, it was not funny and not a very pleasant experience for the other patrons.
Will think long and hard be for returning to this restaurant.
We enjoied the evening in Pulehu very much. It was raining so we asked for the valet parking. We didn't have any problems and they didn't charge for the parking service.
We had the chance to get a wonderful table next to the pond with the Koi fishes. The service was exzellent, the meal very delicious. We started with the Pan fried Gnoechi Genovese, after we had the Bruschetta and as main dish the Risotto Crusted Pesce, I realy loved it!!
The dessert we shared, we had the Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was the only not so fantastic experiance, it was not like an Italien Tiramisu and the portion was much to big. But the evenig was realy exceptional, yes I would say it was the best Restaurant we have eaten during our vacation in Maui and you can believe we tried a lot.
The food was the best I can remember—and the night before we were at Merriman’s! We had the sunset pre-fix special, which is a smoking deal. The Caprese salad was not anything exciting, but the Monchong dinner was AMAZING, along with their butterscotch/Oreo cookie crumble dessert and their WONDERFUL bread. We rolled out of there, and without breaking the bank! We were celebrating my birthday, and the server made it very special for me.
One of us ordered the early bird special with the Caesar salad, risotto crusted opah, and salted carmel dessert. The other had the lamb chops. we shared the the Caesar salad which was wilted. The risotto crusted opah was excellent. My husband didn't care for the sauce on the lamb. The portion was quite large. the salted carmel dessert was shared and tasty. Since it was our anniversary we received complimentary glasses of champagne.
Food was very good but the service was very slow. I don’t know if it was the server or the kitchen. It also was very hard to find. This restaurant is the Westin resort but there are no signs on the outside or inside to tell you where it is. Also the ParkIng was bad. It was hard to find a space
We've dined at Pūlehu several times, but were disappointed this time. We ordered lamb chops medium and they came rare and needed to be re-done. They did comp us our calamari appetizer which was nice. The house special lasagna was OK. I was expecting home made pasta as the restaurant typically makes its own, but it tasted like typical box curly lasagna noodles and the Bolognese sauce contained large pieces of ground meet and no sign of Bescamel sauce. The atmosphere next to the Koi pond is nice, but fine dining it wasn't, this ime anyway.
Gnocchi starter was very good. Lasagna main course also very good. Risotto crusted local fish was tasty. Sorbetti for dessert was good. Ambiance was nice but not exceptional. Service was attentive. Overall, a good experience but perhaps not memorable enough to mandate a return visit on a future Maui trip. A solid choice if you are staying in the area but I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to find it unless you have a craving for something Italian.
