Pueo’s Osteria, located in Waikoloa Village, is an Italian-inspired, inviting restaurant that provides great food in a delightful environment. The Chef focuses on the finest Italian products paired with seafood, produce and meats from boutique farms (sourced locally whenever possible), including “farm-fresh” products from local farmers’ markets.
The Pueo is a local, indigenous owl which represents the Chef"s focus on dinner and serving food until midnight. Pueo's Osteria caters to locals, visitors and serves late to welcome service industry personnel. Engaging service, approachable pricing, great flavors and a lively atmosphere await at Pueo’s Osteria – food, wine & fun … where the night owls meet.
We have eaten here a number of times over the past 12 years. It has gone downhill, judging from this week's dinner. The order wasn't right and the meat was well-done, even after sending it back to be recooked. Rather than comp the meal, they removed the value of the steak, which we didn't eat. The pasta was fine, but the vegetables (green beans and broccoli) were raw.
The food was good but our service was horrendous. We were never told the evenings specials, offered a drink, had our water glasses filled or offered bread. Definitely not worth the drive!
This place is off the radar for our friends who travel to the Big Island, but judging from the crowd the other night the locals certainly know a very good Italian restaurant when they find one. The food is very well done - we particularly enjoyed the lamb shank with perfect saffron risotto and the baked gnocchi with sausage. The caprese salad with pesto and burrata instead of mozzarella was dreamy. The choice of Italian wines was broad and interesting, even by the glass. Looking forward to coming back next year!
We love this place!
A great Italian bistro with an island twist. Pueo's food is excellent. Made from scratch and never disappointing. Their meatballs are a gem in their Marinara sauce. Its a lively place for friends and family to gather. Its always on our list of go-to restaurants when we are in Kona-Kohala .
Food was great. Our server Courtney was wonderful.
From the moment we were welcomed by the friendly Chandler (she was so great, we asked) until the moment we left, our experience was top notch. It was fun watching the staff work as a team...even saw Chandler helping clear/set tables. Our server, Courtney, was spectacular. The food was excellent, and prepared to meet allergy needs. All in all...a great visit. We will be back.
Food was delicious as usual. Courtney was our server and she is excellent.
Decent food, but definitely not worth the price. Ordered a Mac and cheese for my child , we had to send it back (terrible) paid for bread service ( nothing special) wife and I both had heartburn the rest of the evening. $130 dinner
Food was a mixed bag, I bought vegan pizza, as did a friend, and it could have been a frozen pizza out of a box. My wife ordered chicken Milanese which was a large portion and delicious. I was married to an Italian, and travelled in Italy many times, and the food is a poor comparison. ,I find that the restaurant is consistently pretentious and over rated.
The restaurant was full. Obviously a popular place. It was very loud. Perhaps they could invest in some acoustical treatment to help deaden some of the noise. The server was pleasant. The food was good.
Great food! We enjoyed the eggplant and short ribs very much.
The food and service was excellent. I will definitely return.
This used to be our favorite restaurant on the Big Island, but last nights the menu wasn’t as inspired and the food wasn’t as good as it used to be. Food is also more expensive. $6 for a small bread service is ridiculous. Some dishes were very good, but the pizza missed the mark as did the shirt rub. The beef was dry. My pistachio gelato was horrible. I sent it back and they didn’t charge us. It was full of water crystals and tasted awful. The only good notes, my husband soup was good and the pasta dishes were cooked perfectly. Sad to say I’m not sure we will come back.
Love going here! The food is amazingly prepared and we always have great service.
We really enjoyed our dinner. Our server Mindy, was fantastic. I hope the owners realize what an asset she is.
We ordered the cheese bread and calamari to start. The bread was really good. The calamari was a bit dry. I had the cannelloni and my husband had seafood fra diabolo. He loved it. Fresh, quality ingredients. Portion were generous. We’ll be back!
Every place needs a decent Italian restaurant and the Kohala Coast has Pueo’s. It’s lively, comfortable and friendly, with a nice selection of food and drink. I will go back for sure.
Outstanding Italian food with the freshness of local ingredients. Wines were, perhaps, slightly overpriced, but good selection overall. Very enjoyable evening
Restaurant is in a shopping center, inside the restaursnt was noisy with cool from overhead AC vent. The eggplant parmeson was tasty but had way too much cheese. The radiatore genovese flavors just didn’t meld for me. The tiramisu was fair. Our server was very cherrful and pleasant. This place was recommeded by locals but we were disappointed on our last evening on the island.
We love Pueos. We have been going there for at least 6 years. It's the best itallian food on the island with exceptional service. Courtney has been our server several times and is the best in the industry. Can't wait to go back!
The room was crowded and noisy. Our waitstaff was superb. She handled many tables with efficiency and aplomb. The food was mediocre at best. The pasta for the Bolognese was over cooked to the point of almost being mushy. The sauce was extremely bland. A veal with mushroom rags was similarly disappointing with bland sauce and mushy pasta.
Good food. Always enjoy the house made pasta! Will visit again.
very average food, not a good value. I got the black pasta with seafood, husband got spaghetti with meatballs. His dish was pretty good (meatballs were good) but could have used more sauce. My pasta was very average. The lobster was tough, pretty inedible. The rest of the seafood in the dish was ok. For a diablo sauce, I wish it was spicier. Also shared a cesear salad, the dressing was strange-tasting. No bread offered with pasta dishes. The server was nice and attentive. Plenty of wine selections. I wish I had ordered pizza, it looked good on other diner's plates
Very boring Italian food. The spaghetti dish taste like “can pasta” pizzas were ordinary. Desserts were good.
Best meal on the Big Island! The food was great but the service was also very professional. Also great selection of wine at reasonable prices.
Pasta was delicious and a good sized portion. Our service however was terrible! Our server was not friendly. She did not tell us the specials ( which we heard servers around us telling their customers) When we did ask about the specials she seemed annoyed. She couldn't recommend a wine for us. Rushed us through our appy and dinner. Brought our check even before we finished, which didn't give us a chance to give her our discount card. So when we told her we had one she really got annoyed and very rudely told us how now she would have to re-ring our entire order ( 5 items) We told her not to worry about it since she was being such a b*tch about it. Unfortunately this experience has left us not wanting to return. Nor recommend to our friends who are also visiting the Big Island and staying in the Waikaloa area. We dined here last year during our visit and had a much better experience.
Great go-to Italian when in Waikoloa area.
Excellent food, great place. Our friends loved it also . Can't wait to go back. Noise level was high
Incredible spaghetti and meatballs
The food was excellent! This was our second visit to Pueo's from a year ago and the food quality and quantity has not changed. Lydel was a terrific server..constantly checking on us to be sure we had everything we needed.
Love Pueo’s. So glad they have opened Pele’s Wok near me
I would recommend the restaurant, but bring earplugs
Noisy! Had to have a conversation at table for 2. Otherwise, fine.
In all the years we have visited the island this was our first time eating here. We had reservations for a table but decided to sit at the bar for the happy hour/early bird menu at $8 per item to ensure we liked the food and would want to return. We both had the baked ziti and shared a salad and an order of bruschetta. The food was excellent and the smaller portions a perfect size for us. We are not bar type people; if we return we will sit at a proper table next visit!
Negatives: 1) We were surprised and disappointed that, sitting at the bar, ALL THE FOOD was served at the same time. We were EXPECTING to have our salad first then the main dish so we could dine and enjoy our meal, not shovel and run. After stating our disappointment that all the food was served at once, the waiter did offer to put the entree under the warming lights until we finished our salad. Unacceptable, he should have served the salad first and brought the entree out AFTER HE REMOVED the salad plate. The wait staff should be better trained in timing of serving between courses.
2) The music is very loud making it difficult to converse with your partner/table mates. The people sitting next to us were talking very loud to converse with each other. Also, the type of music did not fit the atmosphere. It's an Italian restaurant, play SOFT Italian music not the new age or whatever obnoxious noise was being transmitted over the speakers.
3) The baked ziti is excellent & should be offered to ALL CUSTOMERS, not just served at the bar during happy hour/early bird. To the owner/manager/chef - from what we observed the happy hour baked ziti is popular and would probably do well served on the main menu in regular size portion.
Food was tasty but nothing that said “WOW”. Your basic Italian Trattoria.
Tables very close together...like 10inches.
I don’t need to hear the conversation of the family at the next table. The whole restaurant was very noisy crowded and chaotic.
However, they had a nice extensive wine list.
Courtney was a fantastic server. Had their broccoli soup with Gorgonzola which was excellent. The eggplant parmigiana is always great and my husband thinks their pizza is the best anywhere. Very pleasant dinner on a very rainy evening! We always eat here at least once on our visits.
Great food, great service and real low key.
