I had heard about Pucquio from a friend and after looking at the menu, decided to try it for my husband’s birthday. It was amazing! The food was awesome, service was excellent (especially Antonio who gave us a cultural and history lesson along with our meal). We will definitely be back.
We had dinner here on New Year's eve. The only menu that was available was a prix fixe menu which listed the courses but did not include a price. However on OpenTable the price and menu were posted indicating $125 per person. Imagine our surprise when we were charged $175 pp not including wine or gratuity. The food was good - but no where near worth this price.! The couple at the table next to us were equally astonished. The next day , still upset about the cost and the discrepancy between what was posted on open table and what we were charged I emailed the restaurant requesting an explanation. They have not offerd one nor have they responded to me. I feel duped and definitely won't be back.
We love Pucquio. We have dined with chef/owner Carlos many times now and have never been disappointed with the authentic, creative Peruvian meals he creates. The food is superlative! The ingrediants are fresh, local and delicious. The wine list is inventive and beautifully matched to the dishes! Plus Carlos is really great about accommodating some dietary restrictions I have owing to an illness. It is a terrific restaurant!
If you enjoy watching a pro work in the kitchen, while you’re nibbling on appetizers, sit at the bar and you’ll have a front row seat to a very talented chef in his element.
To make it all even better, the quality of the food Carlos prepares is second to none in the realm of cebiche and other classic Peruvian dishes.
Pucquio is described as refined Peruvian street food - I describe it as delicious! The ceviches - you must have at least one. They a trio offering - ask the server to recommend which three. You will be blown away by the fresh fish and bright flavors. The pork belly confit appetizer is a must-have. And then entrees - take your pick - they are all great. Come with friends - order a few entrees and share, family style. The service is friendly - kitchen can be a little slow - but the food is worth the wait. This is a small restaurant - cozy seating, open kitchen, family friendly atmosphere. My absolute favorite restaurant in Rockridge!!!!
Excellent service, really interesting food. We had a seasonal cebiche and a whole fish. The cebiche serving was fairly small, but excellent fish and a very good sauce. The fish was fried and served in what was basically a cioppino. It was very tasty and once again everything was very fresh and good. I had the red sangria, which was unusual and not too sweet. It was chilled with a large ice cube that had slices of cuke frozen in it, a nice visual and taste touch. We finished with the Peruvian "beignets", and that was more than enough for my wife and myself.
Service was knowledgeable, friendly and generous. My wife was offered several tastes of wine before choosing one and they serve endless little bowls of highly addictive fried corn. The owner came out to greet us after dinner and seemed genuinely grateful that we patronized the restaurant.
We live in the neighborhood and have passed by this restaurant many times in the 4 years it's been open. We'll stop in again!
Excellent food. The chef really has some fascinating flavors going on. The ceviches are not the towering cup of fish you'd normally expect, but clever well plated dishes that challenge preconceived notions.
Almost everything else was in need of improvement. Our server was disorganized, hard to get his attention, couldnt remember what was available, the courses were spaced too far apart, we consistently ran out of water and they didnt have bottles for the table, and in general we felt like we were more of a burden than guests. The staff was all very nice but uncoordinated. With a tighter ship I'm sure this place would shine. The kitchen is carrying it all right now.
We went here for our wedding anniversary and it was wonderful. It's it was less expensive, we'd eat here all the time. We had a cebiche trio, a pork and fig disk and a steak and plantain dish. We also tried the red sangria and were very happy. The food was all delicious and the staff was lovely!
This was my third time at Pucquio. Great specials which we took advantage of and they (causa) were delicious. The main course (seafood in a green buere Blanca with rice and beans) was amazing. Such interesting flavors which I had not tasted before. Great dining experience if you want something unique.
We arrived for our reservation a few minutes early, were greeted and were told that we would be sat in just a moment, no problem. A few minutes later we were sat at a table. It was noticeably busy and all of the staff seemed to be trying to get to everyone. After we were sat it was 26 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. For a drink, to say hello, or for water. We were just ignored. When our server came by, he apologized for the craziness and thanked us for our patience. We took our order and put it in. He was nice and seemed to know the menu very well and had good recommendations. It was an hour from when we walked in the door until there was food on the table. The food was fine but over-priced in my opinion.
I understand that sometimes staff gets buried but you have to at least communicate to your clientele what is happening. My wife and I were out on a date, we were happy to be talking to each other but you have to let us know what's going on so we know what to expect. We were both trying really hard to empathize with the staff but it's hard when no one is talking to you.
Wow! This is a neighborhood gem. Have heard about it and finally tried it last night. The ceviches are awesome. Our waiter helped us navigate the menu and suggested which ones to try. Delicious. Fresh. Full of flavor. We then had fried fish, followed by pork - along with fried yucca and plantains. What a meal! The red sangria was also amazing. Not sweet at all. Perfect. We will be back - hope to become regulars at this friendly restaurant- great food, great service, great vibe - at a good value. A must try!!!
I cannot believe it's taken me so long to get to Pucquio (i.e. Why hasn't there been more talk about it?). It says it's Peruvian street food but it's way more sophisticated than that. My husband and I shared ceviche, a mixed fish first course and a fish stew-like main course. So, lots of fish that was all very fresh and beautifully presented. They also have non-fish entres that looked great and we will try next time. Service was very friendly and helpful tho it was a bit slow (not the server's fault). We would have pre-ordered the beignet-like bombitas we had for dessert if we knew how long they would take. But the wait wasn't bad as the place is charming and has a very friendly atmosphere. Btw, glad we didn't bring kids as it is small, food isn't too kid friendly (at least not for our kids) and it's not inexpensive. Great date night place.
