New England Clam Chowder
Roasted Turkey Dinner
white & dark meat, gravy, sausage-cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, butternut squash & whole cranberries
I have been to the Publick House many times over the years and would normally rate them very good plus! I don't know if "Covid" is to blame for the service, a new/lack of staff, lack of attention, or what yesterday. We were meeting friends for lunch and I had recommended the PH (their first time there, half way for all of us, over an hour drive for all). Our reservation's was 12:30, the food didn't come until 1:45. While it was very good, it was just warm. We had to ask for a second round of beverages while we sat there with empty glasses. I will go back again -- it usually is great. The Bake Shoppe was excellent as usual and I came prepared with a cooler to take "goodies" home.
Everything was great...great food and great service. It was a very relaxing evening!
Good meal, service, and ambiance. Have been going there for years and no disappointments yet. Always enjoyable.
We have eaten there before and enjoyed it. This time the food was mediocre. The chicken pot pie crust was chewy and not flaky.
We love the Publick House! It's always a treat to go there.
Delicious food, lovely atmosphere, many fond memories here! The staff was wonderful.
This is an adorable place, excellent comfort food and a waitress who was fabulous. A guest at the bar bought us dessert. Great surprise for dinner as we were pressing on to Mt. Desert and stopped overnight in Sturbridge. Don’t miss the smoked salmon flatbread.
Excellent service and great staff. Looking forward to returning in the future. Vey impressed with Sara who waited on us, very helpful and professional. Great job 👏
Not our first time. Usually stop on our way through. Food this time was mediocre at best. Had the pot roast. Very bland and tasteless. Wife had the turkey sandwich said it was just okay. Service was very good.
A great place for lunch/ dinner. Food , service and outdoor dining was so good and made for a lovely birthday luncheon.
Loud enough to make hearing our dining companion across the table difficult to hear, but the food and the waitstaff were very good.
We enjoyed a relaxing lunch at a shaded table outside. the tables were nicely spaced apart. The food was very good with generous portions. It turned out to be our dinner. The wait staff were very good. It's a pretty setting
Our staff was wonderful and very accommodating - great with kids. The turkey dinner was amazing and the children's portions were nearly as generous as the adults for just a fraction of a cost. Worth the visit - only wished they were open later on Sundays!
Three of us from different States, were meeting up & we chose the Publick House for a quaint lunch. We were only informed (when being seated) that the dining room was no
longer open for lunch and that we’d be sitting in the Tavern. This was a real disappointment and quite frankly a dreary setting. Cornbread & sticky buns were served first.
The cornbread was tasteless and for those of us who had been to the restaurant before, the sticky bun wasn’t the same. We found out there was a new baker and therefore
some changes had been made. The spinach salad was nondescript & the special turkey spinach wrap was tasteless. The one positive was that our waitress was
attentive. All in all though, it was a pretty disappointing
lunch and probably will not be on our radar to eat at in the future.
It's a great historical place to eat at it. What was interesting and unusual, but very good was that they gave cinnamon buns and corn bread instead of bread for free with butter.
The chowder was the best. The rolls were lovely. Our server was great. Really nice place.
Food was very classic, old-school American. The bread basket included something that looked like a pastry with pecans on top and the sweetest corn bread I have ever had - it was more like cake. We ordered pot roast and the turkey dinner. Nothing wrong with either, they were just very simple (almost no seasoning). The portions were generous.
My first thought when the entrées arrived was that my parents would have loved this place (I'm in my 50s). Turns outs, my companion (also age 50+) was thinking the same thing.
Anyway, the server was great, very professional.
Duck was very good! Food in general was good and exceeded expectations. But too noisy and much much too cold. Freezing!
Limited menu, good New England comfort food. the only option for dining was the Tavern Room. would have been nice to know that when we made reservations. Tavern Room was not a good choice for a special anniversary/birthday dinner.
Enjoyed a great lunch with my husband at Publik House on a Saturday afternoon. Definitely make a reservation. Food, drink and service were all top notch.
Thought our reservation was for the tavern but was seated upstairs with a couple other people in a dark gloomy room.I have been eating and staying at the public house for 30 years it’s not like it used be.
The Publick House is a delightful environment. The Raspberry salad and salmon were absolutely delicious. The lemon Mascarpone cake was not as good. Everything at the a
Publick house always feels very homemade. The cake tasted more store- bought.
Our server as well as the wait staff were enchanting and most personable.
Needless to say we will come again for another visit 🤗
For an appetizer I had the New England clam chowder. That was really think, creamy and very tasty. It could have had more clams, but I only ordered a cup, so perhaps the clams missed the cup. ? The scrod I ordered for my main course was as good as any I’ve ever had. The scallops my date ordered were also quite up to a very high standard. My problem was with the beans, which I generally like cooked somewhat al dente, these were basically raw and inedible. When the server got around to asking if she could put them back I was already half done with the scrod so just decided to pass on the string beans, all of which were left on the plate.
Given that, it was pleasant enough. I would go back for a casual meal.
Had a lovely lunch with friends. The salmon was very good. The server and other staff we encountered were very accommodating. The only issue we had was the noise level.
Restaurant packed and food just a whole lump of turkey and stuffing. Hotel room smelled moldy so moved me to another room. not returning.
Always a nice time- food is steady but not spectacular. We are downstairs, very nice atmosphere. The building is a couple hundred years old but in great shape and sparse but very well decorated.Waiter was excellent, food served hot and not a long wait. Been there 25?times- always a consistent, good meal. Bakery great way to end dinner!!!!
This was an excellent choice to hold a birthday celebration for my 98 year old mom. The food was great and the service was outstanding.
Loved the experience
I would reccomend
We were very happy with our service and the dinner we had at the Publick House. We come in from Newington, Ct and have always had an enjoyable time. Our waitress was friendly and she was excellent. We are looking forward to returning there again.
I am sure that my review would have been higher had and I not experienced the Public House many many times over the past three or four decades. It just did not live up to my memories or expectations. From the appetizer to dessert it was just not the public house I remember. The food was average as for most things except the ambience of the public house that didn't seem to have changed that much. Except for the fact that all the dining room's upstairs weren't open but that was to be expected.
The restaurant was nice. The service was also good, unfortunately the food was not as good as it was on our last visit, two years ago. The Public House hosts several functions each weekend that might hinder the performance in the kitchen.
Dinner with our daughter
If you ate looking for a historic house to dine in Public House is recommended. Old world feel made for an enjoyable dinner.
Food is excellent. My daughter had her wedding there. I cannot say how much they did for her. Anything she needed was done without asking. I would have any type of event there. It was beautiful.
Food was plentiful and delicious. Our waitress was polite and very accommodating.
Good experience and will definitely return.
So pleased you are up and running again
I’ve eaten here many times. The food is always reliably tasty. The service is great and the ambiance is fun.
Staff was accommodating. There were 4 of us and we all enjoyed our meal. Waitstaff was very helpful advice pleasant. We loved it.
Wonderful experience!! Food and service exceptional! The dining rooms are really loud but it will not prohibit us from returning.
We had a very nice dinner in a great atmosphere especially for a holiday.
The Publick House has long been a favorite of ours for celebrating any event, from birthdays, and anniversaries to Thursdays or any other day of the week! The sumptuous Turkey with dressing is my absolute go to dinner. I don't know how they do it but it has the most amazing flavor. The outstanding gravy is the frosting on this cake! MMM, makes my mouth water.
The bread basket contains not only rolls but cornbread and pecan danish! you had me at bread basket.
